Jackson extension?

And DIC, this is a prime example of what happens when a high profile player chooses not to have an agent.

I said on my shows last year, that under his 5th year option was his time to hold the Raven's feet to the fire. He chose to play under market value (Paid $21.5M and QB going rate for an MVP would have been closer to $35/$40M). He lost out on $13-18M in unrealized money, not to mention a HUGE signing bonus.

This was a good faith deal that he made with the Ravens so they could be competitive and grab Roquan Smith as a trade, then to add insult to injury, make him the highest paid player on the roster. Jackson expected the Ravens to reward his loyalty the following year, but instead of a new contract, he's tagged.

Any agent would have forced the Ravens hand last year, with no ability to tag this league MVP, and he would have had a long term contract. 5th yr options are also fully guaranteed, so unlike the franchise tag, he could have held out and still been paid his $21M

Instead, the Ravens played him for a fool, and ended up changing his narrative in Baltimore as an always injured, can't win the big game, malcontent, when all he did was trust the team to do the right thing for their franchise QB after showing them loyalty to play for nearly half the value of a franchise MVP QB last season.

Baltimore is quickly turning into a team that does not retain its 1st round picks, and instead is becoming a team that relies on mercenary players from other team. This is the playbook for Dallas, Washington, and Cleveland to an extant. It isn't sustainable, and when the team sees all of their great first rounders leave via FA or get traded away, the locker room will be filled with drafted discontented players that will hate the side of the locker room that got paid that aren't home grown. This is the beginning of the end for Harbage. Mark my words. 2 years tops before he is fired.

It also gives a bad name to the team from the players point of view, who wants to play there when they didn't show any loyalty to their franchise qb ?

The problem is we still don't know what his contract demands are. There's two demands roaming around the internet and I don't believe either. And before throwing shade at the Rats for 5th year optioning Lamar we probably should understand that the Steelers have and will do the same thing. Which player did we sign long term before the 5th year option hit? We do the same thing using that as a year to bridge us to the tag and then try to work out that long term deal. I would guess most teams do. If Pickett developes into a top 10 QB we all but guaranteed do that to him.

My assumption still is that Lamar thinks he is going to get a deal in that Watson range with those type of guarantees. The Ravens aren't about to give that type of guarantees to a QB who is a knee injury away from being RG3. I am sure they offered him 100+ million in guarantees for his time as a Raven but they aren't going to go 200+ million. Especialy when you see a player trending down like he is. His style of play isn't new anymore and defenses are scheming and drafting to slow it down.

He also is acting like the Ravens are holding him hostage. Nothing is further from the truth. He can go anywhere that wants him and the only thing that team will give up is 2 first round picks. Stafford was had for 2 first round picks, a 3rd, and a former #1 overall pick and 2x pro bowl QB out of his first 3 seasons. Russell Wilson went for 2 firsts, 2 seconds, a 5th, and a former 1st round pick, 2nd round QB and starting DT. Watson went for 3 first round picks along with a 3rd and 4th. 2 first round picks should be nothing to a team who wants an MVP QB. But there's two things stopping any GM from pulling that trigger. 1 is his contract demands. They have to be out of touch with reality otherwise someone would have signed him to an offer sheet. 2nd his regression as a player. He still hasn't learned to read a defense. I watch him play and he is a more athletic Kordell Stewart. Same one read and done passing. If you show him a pre-read and take it away he either throws an ill-advised pass or runs. But if you take his legs away he is screwed. And he has missed 10 games the last two years. Too many red flags to give him what he wants and lose two first round picks.

I agree Stryker and thanks for the in depth details.

Action absolutely ****-ed himself with by trying to be smarter than everyone else and not getting representation. Even the NFLPA suggested to him to get an agent. Nope, I can do this and here he is.

I can feel for how things are turning out for him as a PERSON, but I don’t regret anything for his football player or team aspect of the situation. The more controversial, the better as far as I’m concerned.

A-N-D

You hit the nail on the head as for Hairball and the team future.

None the less I am not throwing out a high money all guaranteed contract for a running back playing QB. I also think his injuries are a legitimate concern because his style of play makes it one. Action Jackson wanted to go agent less, I don't blame the results on anyone else but him and his poor decision making.

You don't win the significant games with a QB that can't scramble to pass accurately. I think that will always handcuff a team into being just good, but not great.

Rats would be smart to take less than two ones for him and move on.

I also don't buy into the notion that moving on would cost the head coach his job. That team is built to run and play defense. You bring in a more accurate QB free agency or the draft and that team is fine...

I think he meant that he will lose the locker room

Not sure I buy that either. Especially if they are aggressive next year with a replacement. Or draft one this year...

I'm tired of the MVP ****. That was 4 years ago, and he hasn't come close to that since. His TD-INT ratio has gotten much worse, especially the last two years. And I'm tired of hearing it's about the weapons. Look at his receivers in his MVP year. The only names you know are Boykin, Snead and Brown. Not exactly a murderers row. Maybe it's not a lack of weapons, but that NFL DC's are better at defending him because he is limited as a passer.

And just because the Browns were stupid enough to throw $250 million guaranteed at a QB doesn't mean the rest of the NFL has to do the same thing.

Doesn't mean the Rats can't a little bit close to stupid here. Jackson is helping them get there.....

The higher the cost and the longer the stay…………. Benefits us !!!

I want MAXIMUM of both, out of the ravens, smart or not.

Nice summation Cope, you have to wonder if it has already started. I mean Ozzie stepped down in 2018 as the GM, and is now the EVP of player personnel (not the club). DeCosta has been running the show since and each year there are player questions galore because their drafts haven’t panned out. Who is really calling the shots? Doesn’t seem like Ozzie is involved anymore.
