Jacoby Jones claimed; Archer released

Archer's new jersey number is 86'd. Long over due. Waste of a 3rd round pick.

The one who like your post is the biggest dumb *** in the thread. FYI
If that's addressed to me, screw you, prick!

Just curious, who are some other notable players picked AFTER Archer that we could have used here? I'm sure there was a corner or three that we could have drafted in that spot instead. This has to go down as possibly the dumbest pick ever made by Tombert.

Good move! I like Jones as our new KO and Punt returner. Its about damn time we got someone with talent to return kicks even though AB was great at punt returns but never liked that idea. Archer should go to Canada.

Watkins (PS Eagles) Cockrell (we got from the PS squad of the Bills) Breed and (who is doing reasonably well in DC. IIRC , only ZachB was touting Breeland. I'm not sure what order these were picked. The point, really is that two of these guys were easy for the Steelers to get and the other one is, I think, the only one to have an impact.

The problem is that nobody on here keeps up with other teams the same way they do the Steelers. Are you really sure nobody else drafted after Archer is doing anything at all? Nowhere? Even if they are a backup at a real position (unlike Archer) they would have been a better pick IMHO.

What does it matter who they could have drafted instead of Archer? Really, I'm serious. What does it matter, at this point?

There are three very different arguements about Archer

The first is whether he was a good pick in the third round of that draft

The second is whether a kickoff returner with no other position, not even coverage units, has a place on a modern NFL team

The third is whether Dri Archer was any good in the NFL...

I disliked the Pick, i disliked the position and I thought he was an average returner who was trying too hard to prove his worth and making dumb decisions

They tried to make this work twice now with Rainey and Archer. Are they going to keep trying and wasting picks?

He asked about notable players and, specified that there were CB's available. Those are three that I know about and had previously checked up on a couple of times and would have taken instead of Archer (I think there was a fourth, but can't remember who that was). I haven't checked since earlier in the season, so I can't say, for sure, if Watkins is Active or still on the PS. I didn't say which I would have preferred over the others, just that I would have taken one of them after looking to see who the next 3-4 CB's taken were. I've said many times that I would have taken a CB at that spot, therefore, I didn't look at other positions. I know that two CB's chosen at other spots after Archer were on Practice Squads and another was showing promise. That is it.

I can check other positions, if you like. I don't know if it makes sense to look at picks that are more than 5 or 10 away from #97, though, unless it is for a specific position.

Oh, another player I would have chosen was Bryant, who we got later anyway.

Do you think all other teams in the league hit on all their draft picks? The coaches and GM see talent in players and have an idea of how to use their skills to help the team.. sometimes it doesn't work. Actually, when you're talking rounds 4-7, it usually doesn't work out as far as being a key player. I didn't like Dri in the 3rd but he had speed and I thought he would be dangerous with the ball, he never showed the kind of burst we all hoped for and it didn't work out.
Getting Cockrell makes this pick somewhat of a wash IMO.

The funny part is that when KO guys were valuable they had a very good small one in Stephan Logan, whom Tomlin was uber eager to get rid of, and he was way better than either of the other two

I get that. I was just making a general statement about draft picks. I don't know anyone that keeps up with all the teams in the NFL. And even if that player were a backup he'd be more valuable than Archer.

To me it doesn't make it a wash because you could have had a real position player AND Cockrell. I understand every team misses on draft picks. But that was never the issue with Archer. Since a lot of draft picks miss that doesn't mean you should draft players that are even less likely to succeed. You draft player MORE likely to succeed. Archer was never going to be an every down player. He was simply a KR. Nothing more. It was a wasted pick even if he isn't a bad KR. KR are almost non-existent in the NFL now. No reason to draft a KR in the 3rd round.

so they ditched a short guy that wasn't doing much for a taller guy that isn't doing much and just got cut because he hasn't done much.

this is comical to me.

did this cost money?

Yes, it cost them money. Jones is making a lot more than Dri (although we only cover the pro-rated portion of Jones' salary). Jones hasn't done much this year, but you can't compare him to Dri at all because Jones is a very accomplished punt and kick returner, and - as we all know - Dri has done absolutely zero in the NFL.

Dri was a comp pick. You can't trade comp picks. We moved up for Landry Jones. The Browns used that pick in a package to move up for Jonny football. Can't say that bothers me at all.

I meant we traded up for Shamarko, not Dri

Damn.....thought I ran into him today.

Jones wasn't signed fast enough to get him to practice today. So, does he dress and play this weekend or not?

I was pissed when we took archer over Bryant. We were lucky he was still there in he 4th.

Well he is a kick returner. Its not like he needs to know much of the playbook to return kicks. Its only an issue if we get decimated at the WR position during the game.
