Jags Fire Urban Meyer

Well Noll had 1 win first season, so initial record might not be indicative of how good of a NFL coach he is. But in Urban Myers case you are more than likely right. Guy needs to keep his hands to himself. He is lucky someone hasn't retaliated. (Whooped that ***)
It's a whole different time. As noted, Noll replaced virtually an entire team in just one or two seasons. He had the authority then to do something like that. Today, with the salary situations a coach could NEVER just cut a guy. Way too much money tied up in him.

They are in a situation now where they can let Bush go at the end of the season, but I really believe a good part of his crap play is either him just wanting to ensure he gets out of Pittsburgh next year or trying to make sure he doesn't get injured so he can get a contract next year.

Today the players make MUCH more than the coaches and they have significant financial leverage over the owners and the teams.

And I bet you could get Jacksonville to pay for most of the armored car. It's the opportunity of a lifetime. Seriously.

I was in a group that had a banquet once in Latrobe. Andy Russell was our speaker. After dinner he told a story about Noll's beginnings in Pittsburgh. He got the team together and said to them "You know why you don't win games? It's because you're no good. You can't tackle, block, run, catch, etc."

Only two guys from that team made it onto Noll's team the next year - Andy Russell was one, and he didn't say who the other one was.
Joe Greene

There were many others that made the 1970 team. Hanratty, Lloyd Voss , Chuck Hinton. Bruce Van Dyke , Ray Mansfield , Dick Hoak , JR Wilburn, John Brown, Chuck Beatty , LC Greenwood , Ben McGee and Sam Davis. Me thinks Russell was exaggerating to make a point

You may be right. I never looked into it. Just telling you what he told us.

Meyer benched James Robinson a couple of weeks ago, the guy has been pretty ******* good despite all the teams shortcomings. No way in hell I'd want a guy like him in Pittsburgh.

College coaches rarely if ever make it in the pros. The pros have parity and the coaches real power is far more limited. It's real easy to win when your team has significantly better talent than all but three teams on your schedule and it's a different deal when you have to handle players who have more job security then you do. When tge time finally comes please don't head down the College route though I don't see the Rooneys entertaining that idea.

He sat Robinson for fumbling. Lots of coaches do that.

From what I’ve seen on Meyer is there’s valid criticism of his scheme. I’ve heard several people saying their route combos are too simple for NFL and are easily covered. That’s a valid criticism but all this other stuff sounds like losers bitching about somebody trying to change the culture.

it also sounds like media people out to get him because he didn’t kiss their ***.

All the stories I’ve seen so far sound like losers bitching. Especially the Josh Lambo. He’s trying to act like Meyer drop kicked him. Sounds like he was stretching and Meyer kicked his leg out to make him fall. Sound like Meyer was intentionally trying to pressure the guy to see if he can handle pressure. Pretty important for a kicker. And apparently Lambo broke.

If it was a joke then this wouldn't have happened after. He's a ***** with little-dick syndrome:

Lambo said the day after the alleged incident, Meyer approached him while in the nutritional aisle at the team’s training facility.

“He sees me and I’m by myself and he kind of cornered me and comes up to me and says, ‘Are you going to put a smile on that face?’” Lambo told the Tampa Bay Times. “I said, ‘I’ll smile if you’ll stop kicking me.’”

Lambo expressed to Meyer that he was not a fan of the way he was coaching him. Meyer’s response apparently included a threat.

"His response was, ‘O.K., you don’t like me doing this, O.K. If you don’t like me doing that, fine. But if you ever speak to me like that again, you’ll be out of here. You’re the first player I’ve ever let speak to me that way in my career, and if you do it again, you’re gone,’” Lambo recalled.

Lambo said he was shocked at the response and also confused. He said he asked Meyer which part of his response offended him.

“[Meyer] said, ‘When you responded to me out there on the practice field in front of everybody. If you have an issue and don’t like me kicking you, well then you keep that to yourself and you wait until after practice and after meetings and you come find me in the office and tell me privately,’” Lambo said.

You can be hard-nosed and be a great coach. I'd take Parcells out of retirement right now. But Meyer is a petulant **** and clearly needs to have children with their future on the line to domineer to see success.

He sat Robinson for fumbling.
That's the word but he's got as many as Jonathon Taylor and Austin Ekeler. It's not like they got a ton of options beyond that offensively. Trevor Lawerence said he was confused by his benching. At any rate, if his scheme sucks that's an even better reason.

hanratty was drafted by Noll. Didnt even look up the others yet..

You have:
1. Grind incident
2. Calling is assistant coaches losers.
3. He kicked his kicker... Supposedly too hard . Sounds like in Jest.
3. b He cut said kicker after he missed his first 3 field goals of the season and was released.. (sour grapes anyone)

is that it?

lol @ "Bully Coach"
Heard that he refused to fly back with the team after a loss.

Lambo said something like "Don't ever f-ing kick me again" and Meyer responded that he was the head ball coach and could kick him when he wanted to. Lambo said it was not a full kick, but not just a tap. 5/10 power
Meyer did not fly back with the team and that's when the grind incident happened.
Also you have him not calling kickers / punters by name. It's very disrespectful and degrading.
You can be a hard *** coach and still treat people with respect. Meyer just seems like a total prick all the way around

I am convinced there is some grand method to the madness of some of these insanely paid college coaches.

I don't exactly know how Saban has avoided cheating scandals but for the rest of the NCAA, I think the reason you see even the best coaches move around about every 6-8 years is that there is so much cheating in college sports that eventually the closets just get too full of skeletons. And it is best to leave and move on rather than stick it out.

And some of the best cheaters (like Meyer) can use the NFL to milk an incredible payday and a 1-2 year hiatus from being BMOC as the head coach of a multi-million college program, which let's face it, is probably the best gig in the entire world. You're surrounded by college kids, you live in college towns, you get anything you want, you get paid MORE and you work half as much as pro coaches.

Meyer probably bagged $15 million dollars and now gets to possibly retire into the sunset at another D-1 school if he wants after a prolonged vacation. What a gig.

T-Law straight up, they sign Minnow in the offseason.
haha, I doubt that strongly. Hopefully we could get their second and third this year and a 1+2 in 2023 or something like that.

you mean like when Parcells publicly referred to WR Terry Glenn as “she". Parcells was famous for throwing his players under the bus every week. but the media loved him so that was great motivation.

Same thing here. If that Lambo story was about Nick Saban, the media would be saying how it shows he’s a great coach who challenges his players to be the best.

This is the same Jags loser organization that fired Tom Coughlin for being too mean to players.

Dakich has a good take. He’s Urban’s friend but still his points are valid. Most of the complaints are just whining from losers who will likely get cut by the next coach anyway.
