I think it's a very interesting year of Free Agents for OLB/DE position this year. Deeper than most and I'm still not in favor of tagging Dupree and would rather even use that money to double dip in the free agent market.
Let's look at the market:
I. Will get huge 100+ million deals and are out of our price range (knowing we will be making TJ Watt one of these players in a year)
J. Clowney, Age 27
S. Barrett, Age 27
II. Very similar options vs. Dupree and might be tagged by their teams
Vic Beasley, Age 28
Shaq Lawson, Age 26
Dante Fowler, Age 26
Matt Judon, Age 28
Yannick Ngakoue, Age 25
III. Good age, but is a step below Dupree. Some have injury concerns. Might be open to 1-year prove-it deals:
E. Ogbah, Age 26
C. Nassib, Age 27
J. Attaochu, Age 27
IV. Productive veterans age 29+ that are likely open to 2-year deals that can be very cap friendly:
M. Addison, Age 32 (10 sacks)
R. Quinn, Age 30
M. Golden, Age 29
J. Collins, Age 30
V. Curry, Age 32
J. Sheard, Age 31
I just think there are some options we can consider (even TWO options) to gain depth at OLB vs. using a lot of cap money on Dupree on a 1-year, $16 million tag deal.
Obviously all those above will likely not be available and some you like might be overpaid by some stupid GM, but if you wait it out, I bet 3-5 will be available after the initial run on free agents and we can gain some interesting and good depth to the position and still be somewhat effective (maybe no AS effective, but good and with more options moving forward).
