Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Kenny Pickett, is the early favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year according to the odds on DraftKings and FanDuel sportsbooks.

Pickett’s current odds sit at +500 at both DraftKings and FanDuel as of writing this article. Following Pickett are wide receivers Drake London and Treylon Burks, both at +700. Another quarterback doesn’t even enter the conversation until Desmond Ridder at +1400 odds.

Kenny Pickett OROY odds

Odds to win the NFL’s 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

The Pitt alum, who was taken with the 20th overall pick, isn’t even a lock to win the starting job out of training camp. Pickett would have to first beat out former second overall pick of the Chicago Bears, Mitch Trubisky, whom the Steelers acquired in March at the start of free agency. It is possible for Pickett to see substantial playing time this season, even if he doesn’t start Week 1. OROY voters also tend to favor quarterbacks, with the honors going to the position six times dating back to 2010. Those quarterbacks were Justin Herbert (2020), Kyler Murray (2019), Dak Prescott (2016), Robert Griffin III (2012), Cam Newton (2011), and Sam Bradford (2010). Ja’marr Chase won the award in 2021.

Pickett would be second Steelers Quarterback to win the award

The only other Steelers quarterback to win the award was Ben Roethlisberger back in 2004. Who was, at the time, only the second quarterback to win OROY since the AP started giving out the award in 1967. Dennis Shaw of the 1970 Buffalo Bills would become the first to win it 34 years before Roethlisberger entered the league. While those 34 years comprised mostly of Running Backs winning the award, 25 times to be exact. Only 6 running backs have won it since 2005.

Kenny Pickett is QB1 in a lesser draft class

2022 was considered to be a weaker class for quarterbacks than previous years. After Pickett’s selection in the first round, another quarterback wasn’t taken until Desmond Ridder went to the Atlanta Falcons in the third round, followed by Malik Willis (Titans) and Matt Corral (Panthers) in the same round. There was predraft talk of neither Willis or Pickett being available by the time the Steelers were on the clock. With most analysts mock drafts having a quarterback going 6th overall and as high as 2nd in others.

Why Kenny can win OROY

Of course, this is predicated on him opening the season as the starting quarterback or taking the reins shortly thereafter. Kenny Pickett was touted as the most pro-ready quarterback in the draft class this year. A 5-year starter at Pitt, Pickett set school records in competitions, passing yards and passing touchdowns and broke Dan Marino’s single season touchdown record in 2021. If he can lead the Steelers to a winning record and even a playoff berth one would think that would be enough to give win him the award. Especially since ESPN has the Steelers ranked as one of the worst teams in the AFC. Unless Ridder or Willis step in and lead their respective teams to a playoff berth I think Pickett is a good bet for the award if he plays. Treylon Burks could put together an impressive campaign for the Titans, who just traded away AJ Brown. But a wide receiver has only won Offensive Rookie of the Year 4 times in the last 20 seasons.

This crap is all over the board with Kenny from we picked the wrong QB to he’s not a first round talent to rookie of the year.
These people are all crazy! Let the young man settle in and get his NFL legs and begin the competition this summer. Jeez!

I hope he wins the starting job right away. I hope he plays all 17 games. Sitting him behind one of the two qbs that the rest of the NFL gave up on doesn't make sense.

Rick Mirer won ROTY over Bledsoe and RG3 won over Andrew Luck. Early success mainly comes from immediate playing time on a team that needs a rookie to produce. it’s not an indication of future greatness.

Drake London has the best shot. Atlanta has no WRs with Calvin Ridley suspended for the year. London has to get the ball. Titans traded AJ Brown so they needs Burks to produce immediately. They are far and away the 2 rookies in the best position to see immediate volume of touches.

Breece Hall is in a committe. Same with Kenneth Walker. WRs like Wilson, Olive, Dotson and Skyy Moore maybe be target 2 or 3 on their teams. Jameson Williams may not even play until week 8 or so.

Christian Watson is in a great spot with GB but Rodgers famously refuses to throw to rookies. Maybe the fact that the cupboard is bare in GB changes that but he may also still prefer to throw to vets like Lazard, Watkins and Cobb.

If Pickett starts early then he has a shot because voters favor QBs.

I think George Pickens and Calvin Austin have decent long shot possibilities. Steelers will have a new QB and 1 of them could become a favorite target. Still unlikely to get the volume of London or Burks because Steelers have multiple receiving options and Atlanta and Tennessee don’t.

I just dont see Pickett starting the year especially right out of the gate. If I was Mitch I would be pretty pissed. I just hope they really go for the best guy and not hand Pickett the start do to pedigree. If

Draftkings and Fanduel are at least willing to put their money where their mouth is.

I don’t recall anyone saying Rudolph would be OROY.
I do. He was going to be the heir to the Rothleisburger throne. He could do no wrong coming out of college. We were heading to the land of milk and honey..

Folks slobbering all over an untested rookie QB better temper their expectations.

Hell I bet he doesn't take more than a few snaps. I think that might make it tough to be OROY.

If he doesn't see action or only sees limited its because Trubisky is playing well. And that might he better for Pickett's development.

Who said that? Rudolph was never going to get a snap over Roethlisberger when he was a rookie.

Yeah this Rudolph crowning narrative is absolute horse caca, 🤣 that was never a thing

What I remeber was " we got a 1st round talent in the 3rd"

Now that "caca" was very relevant and repeated numorously.

Not a soul drafted has played a single down in the NFL. Maybe make that speculation at the end of training camp about players, but right now it's just silly.

The entire process of player acquisition is speculation. Teams get guys they think will be good. It’s easy to suggest the rookie QB who plays the most will have a good chance at OROY. It really doesn’t go any deeper than that.

Most people hated the Rudolph pick because Ben still had several years left and it was seen as a waste. But it was the Steelers who justified the pick by saying they had a 1st round grade on him in what was seen as a deep QB draft in 2018. Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, and Rosen all drafted top 10 and Lamar drafted 32. Rudolph was next off board in rd 3. Steelers said Rudolph would have been a 1st round pick most years.

The Steelers also justified the pick by saying the 2019 QB class looked weak. They graded Rudolph higher than the 19 class which ultimately included Kyler Murray #1, then Daniel Jones, Haskins in RD 1. Drew Lock rd 2. Will Grier rd 3, and Minshew rd 6. Of that class, only Murray and Minshew have done much. Jones and Lock may get a chance last chance this year. Haskins may have had another chance. But it appears the Steelers were correct that It was a weak class and Rudolph graded out likely ahead of all of them but Murray who they would not have been able to draft.

Most fans now have an irrational hate for Rudolph.

I hear and appreciate your post.

I didn't mind Rudolf and one of the few here who wanted to give him a chance. I hope KPickett is better and that means our tea is better. As for Mitch and Kenny head to head I think Kenny is going to have his hands full because Mitch is going to come out with desire to prove and with his time behind Buffalo QB I think it will show in a positive way.

Those granting Kenny the job without even a battle are ******** nuts. I just hope the better of thwo get the job and not just handed to either.

I'm still salty that l was going to take TJ Watt at 9:1 for DPOY, but I forgot to put the bet in before the season started.

as it turns out he had several years left, but he was doing the 1year at a time deal by then. if you have a QB with a 1st rd grade on him still around in the 3rd, you take him.
and I agree with you, do I do not get the Mason hate on this board

Why not an OT as rookie of the year?
