Mike Tomlin Gets One-Year Extension

The Steelers likely thinking is that we're stuck with him until Ben retires. Bring in a new coach with a new system and Ben won't see another SB.

possible, but I have more faith in Ben picking up a new system quickly, than Tomlin suddenly figuring **** out.

Goff sure had trouble moving on from Fisher's system.

but he's not 38 years old in the twilight of his career either, where ihs voice is rather large in the organization. Ben had a say in this extension. There's no doubt. Ben wanted Haley out and got his QBC buddy the OC job. Those two run the offense now. HCMT overlooks the D. Not well, but he does.

This is horrible decision making if it's true. Ben is the offense. He's doing great no matter who the OC happens to be. There is no reason to bring in a new system since Tomlin doesn't have a system to start with. It has nothing to do with him. I understand they don't want to start over with Ben nearing the end of his career. But think of this logic... Ben was in his prime the past 8 years. What has the organization seen from Tomlin that makes them think he is going to win a SB in 3 years since Ben won't be getting any younger and Tomlin isn't getting any better at his job after 12 years.

One more thing that bothers me about the Steelers. They can't admit a mistake when it comes to HCs. They think that since it worked in the past it always will work. Why does every coach have to stay here 15+ years? Tomlin hasn't won a SB in 10 years. And when his contract expires he will have been here 15 years. Why? Why waste a HOF Qbs career because you can't admit a mistake.

Believe me I'm no Tomlin apologist. I didn't want him to get his previous extension. But who knows maybe they're worried Ben would just retire if they brought in a new coach. Either way we're stuck with him for three more years unless they lose a season due to a lockout( which is a good possibility) then it would be two more years

Typical "stability for stability's sake" from this organization.

Let this sink in: Tomlin's last 8 years have produced 3 playoff wins with Big Ben -- arguably the greatest QB in Team history. Chuck Noll's last 8 seasons with a parade of tomato cans at the QB position produced 2 playoff wins.

Yet, the apologists insist he's a Top 3-5 NFL HC with those results with generational offensive talent -- and drafting defense in the First Round for 7 straight seasons.

How come he hasn't been fired yet?

Because the game of football has evolved since the days of Coach Noll. Comparing the two are literally apples to oranges.

Before you respond - really think about what coaches have to deal w/ these days. I'm no spring chicken, but I can rest assuredly say that Coach Noll coached 'men', who didn't have to live under the constant microscope of the media and social media. Men who didn't throw tantrums or not play for an entire season because they weren't getting enough game play to produce fantasy football points.

I fully understand that Coach Tomlin isn't the best coach in the league. We all know his shortcomings - but at least he can live in peace knowing his victories are tainted with cheating...

It's a ONE YEAR extension.......not multiyear.....which is indicative of, "You need to show us something! Like you have control of the locker room, can make in-game adjustments, can stop playing up/down to the competition, and can TEACH your players/coaches."
I like it.
This is the true PROVE IT contract for CMT.
Put up or shut up time with the locker room cancers gone.
If he can prove it, then he'll get the typical 3 - 5 year extension next time.
If he can't, in true Steeler fashion, he'll retire/want to try a new challenge in life. He'll NEVER be fired....even if he raped Rooney's granddaughter.

anyone that thought that they would bring in a new HC in Ben's last years is clearly misguided. They will win/lose with that duo. If Ben is running the show like many say is, he doesn't want a major shake-up like that. There's a comfort there and gotta accept it.

I agree there's definitely a comfort level there. You still can't convince me Aaron Rodgers didn't at least play a small part in McCarthy getting fired.

I don't get this line of thinking. We haven't exactly seen much evidence lately that they'll see another SB with the current coach.

Absolutely and Ben has changed his style multiple times over the years to fit in with a new offensive focus.

I'm not sure why BB is always brought up in relation to MT. BB only stopped MT's playoff advance one time. BB has little to do with Tomlin's teams falling short.

MT's problems have been borne of stubbornness, lack of creativity (refusing to rotate RB carries), and losing to teams he should beat.

Hairball has more playoff wins, and all things considered has enjoyed the at least slight leverage in the rivalry.

If anything, Hairball stealing the AFCN last year with a 13 Wonderlic QB indicts Tomlin way more than BB and drones in the sky.

What we have come to expect from the ownership of the Steelers today. They allowed Tomlin to get away with questionable coaching and allowing Brown's actions for more than one year under Tomlins lack of discipline . Ben leaves and then he will be gone and the rest of the sport world will not get a chance to see the real coaching ability of Tomlin, his record is based on talent that he has had and not been able to improve to Super Bowl Winners

I think you're focusing on the wrong part of my comment. You compared Coach Tomlin's last eight years to Coach Noll's last eight years...

My rebuttal was showing the difference of the NFL "then" v.s. "now". I concluded that Coach Tomlin is not the best coach in the league (many believe that is Darth Hoodie) but his wins aren't tainted.

Ok, now back to our program in progress...

You'll be fine, Double S...I'll drink a Heineken for you later...
Haha. Wife's nephew is playing a semi pro soccer game tonight. Friggen hate soccer. I will have plenty to try to get through. And throw in some legal West Coast Rockstar Weed to boot. But there won't be any Heineken. Hate that as much as the goddamn soccer.

Damn, fella - you're hard to please...

Pabst, now that's funny.

Lol, I know right. Never really drank either so I have no dog in this fight, it just reminded me of that nut Frank Booth and that funny scene.

Now you can't even show up to training camp in a helicopter. You used to be able to shoot at them.
