Mitch Trubisky

Mitch is a stop gap and not the team's future, but he is arguably better than Rudolph, with Pickett somewhat of an unknown at this point.

If Mitch is the problem, is our 1st round pick RB also a problem?

The o-line may well be the worst in the league, and the play calling speaks for itself.

You also aren't playing the defending conference champion that supposedly got better in the offseason every game.
Our team - one slated to go 7-10 by many - beat a team that many deem to be one of the primary Super Bowl contenders in their own house. I can't imagine why anyone would see that as anything but a positive.

I'm as positive as the next guy, but then I realize that Tomlin-led teams have historically played UP to good teams and DOWN to the crappy teams. If that weren't so, then yeah, SN would have cautious optimism after last night. We've all seen this same movie before. But then again, maybe that pattern changes this year (younger new QB, better weapons at WR, and Brian Flores helping out on D, etc.) See!?!? Optimism!

I would like to think if we would fix the OL it would help a bit. The offensive scheme might work. We might have a better running game. The QB who happens to be playing might make better reads and throws. Maybe this OL gels. One can hope right?

from what I saw yesterday, we have a very limited route tree for our WRs.
Go and Curl

any slants ran yesterday? i know we dusted off the trusty jet sweep for a few plays too many.

IMO, Canada is severely hampering the offense - his own damn offense, at that - by not utilizing the WRs to their best ability. we've all heard ad nausem "throw the ball up and let your playmakers make a play." well, seems that is what we do with our go routes. close your eyes and heave it, Mitch. WR will be running straight down the sideline. No worries.

Or we run curls, curls and more curls. There may have been one back throw that was missed, but we mostly ran curls and go routes.

Is Canada calling **** plays because of our **** OL, or is our **** OL **** because they're being asked to do what they're not good at doing? Granted, our OL isn't the most athletic group, nor even the most cerebral, but that falls on our OC to work on. Square peg? Pound it into that round hole, Canada! Didn't work? Do it again, and again. and again. and again.

I'd have to say that while Mitch wasn't Kurt Warner nor even Duck Hodges, he was just average. Average is what we've asked for right here on this board for our QB to be so our defense can win the game. Well, we got our average QB. Though, again, is he average because of the **** play calling? And is this due to his own limitations or because Canada is a **** OC?

I've a hard time saying that this is all on Mitch. Yeah, Pickett might be a spark, but I'd fear that wouldn't last for too long and he's revert to being average... which is what we have now. I don't believe there's much physically different between Mitch and Kenny, and KP is our future.

I just hope Canada is not here to be part of our immediate future.

If we can't fix the O-line enough to run 80+ yards (not including the QB scrambling) per game this year, it won't matter who the QB is. Trubisky seemed to have time to throw yesterday but there were no throws downfield. The announcers kept talking about how many guys were at or near the line. They said go max protect and throw it deep. They never did. Same BS as last year. Teams cannot cover DJ, Claypool, Pickens, and Muuth. As someone mentioned above, Pickett would throw guys open. He's not afraid to throw it out there or to the back shoulder and let his guy make a play. I know it was one game but Claypool was contorting his body all over the place and either catching the bad ball or getting damn close to catching a bad ball. That was a very good sign.

Some of you must be clairvoyant...how else can you state what Pickett will do when he has NEVER played in an actual NFL game. The way some of you describe his incredible abilities, we should just fit him for the yellow jacket right now. The odds of rookie QB's coming in and lighting things up is slim and none when you have a good OC, OL, Scheme...we have none of the above. The back-up QB is always the most popular player in Pittsburgh.

On Minkahs' pick 6. He baited the mighty Joe Burrow into throwing that ball, and he jumped the route. Burrow got suckered like a rookie qb, not like someone whose last game was a super bowl.

This is definitely a scheme/OC thing. Mitch was afraid to make a mistake, so even when he had time he was hesitant to toss it.

Canada fricked his confidence today
until we have a even halfway non laughable OL, no scheme or Coach will change the outcome. This is what you get when you ignore your Oline constantly until the later rounds of the draft and then whiff considerably on those picks as well. Same as i saw before, we have guys blowing past our tackles before they are even upright when the ball is snapped.

We won the ******* game against the reigning AFC champs in THEIR crib.
All that mattered this week.

THere is always next week.
and a week to adjust.

bunch of whiny *** posters on here.
just my opinion.

keep putting that negative bulshit out in the ether.
Just another thing this team will have to fight,

ENJOY THE ******* WIN,
When you need overtime and go to the very last second to win a game that had 6 sacks and 5 turnovers there is a problem. A win is a win but with those sacks and turnovers it says an awful lot when you barely squeak a win out.

Everyone is frustrated cause we are seeing the last few years again in this first game. Defense played amazing, spent way too much time on the field cause the offense couldn't do anything with what the D gave them over and over and over again.

It was how he played in the preseason. You could easily tell the difference.

He was playing against vanilla defenses with guys that are now stocking groceries at Giant Eagle or sitting on the bench. Trubisky and Canada looked much different in pre-season too.

I agree with most of what you say, but its not like we eeked out a win over the lions or jags. We beat one of the best teams in the league in their house. The +5 turnover is not realistic, but we are also not playing great teams every week. I think the offense will do better next week and our D should be alright vs the Pats offense. Mitch needs some called bootlegs or roll outs along with using the middle of the field. I don't have much hope for the running game, but if we can get the passing game going teams can't crowd the line as much
Moving the pocket more frequently, delayed shovel passes/screens after the moved pocket, quit hitting seam routes to attack the middle of the field would all be decent additions to the game plan.

We did beat a good defense by having a better defense…when the offense is gifted many extra possessions from turnovers and they are able to squeak out 11-13 1st downs all game depending how ya look at it and are gifted a TD by the D as well that game was 100% overcoming an inept offense. But yeah they put 13 on the board in regulation on the back of that dominant performance…can’t say I’m the least bit impressed with 80% of our drives having 1 first down or less.

Somewhat sure, but even when they gave him better looks he still was impressive. We could have said the same things with Ben before an injury thrust him into action. Could he struggle? Sure. I want to say there is just an equal chance he would do fine. I would imagine they will stay with Mitch until they see an ineffective QB. Who knows how long that will be. But if I was a gambling man I would bet that it will be sooner than later.

In fairness, Ben was in a MUCH better situation as a rookie. He had a competent O Line and a competent OC. Kenny Pickett has neither.

The O-line is a work in progress doesn't mean it won't be competent. Now as far as Canada....
I have nothing.

Seems most of this board didn't give the Steelers of much of a shot this year, myself included. But this thread reads like the sky is falling after 1 game, it's not. Year in and year out it takes the O some weeks to gel, if it doesn't then look for solutions you already have in pocket. Our line needs work as does Mitch and the OC.

Give Trubisky his shot, he's earned it. We got punched in the mouth by Cinci last year so I'll take the win and hope TJ heals quick.

I only watched the 2nd half so far but I expected to see a lot more of this and RPOs. But I'm guessing that when the run gets shut down as it did yesterday it shuts down that part of the game too.

We had 9 Pro bowlers and 6 All-pros. Two (Faneca and Harting) All-pro First Team OL. Marvel Smith was a Pro bowl OT. Not seeing that on this team.

Beating a QB up for no reason, he had no running game which does not help the passing game. When he did have time no one could get open sounds like last year. Mitch brough us back twice in overtime and second time got the win. A win against a team no one pick to lose, afc champs Super Bowl losers playing at home. WE have a line that should have the finger pointed at way more than Mitch and we won. Canada was as last year try to run up the middle with no success. Did we try any pass across the middle, did we pass on first down, we finally had a great TE screen and was never used again. Mitch did what was asked. One week give the guy a break. I watched the replay and not one time was there a hole to run through and Mitch even being mobile had no where to run himself. Officials sure missed the holds on Cincy and we got the flag at key times in the last four minutes of game. Was a wild game and the team never gave up.

Just rewatched that. Focus on Chuks.... WTH????? Sure, the DE jumped offsides, but a flag was coming and it became a free play, yet Chuks just full-stopped. The rusher was taking dead aim at his QB and he's just there, a spectator on the field. Unreal.
waving his arms around like he's trying to take off

To be fair, the officials aren't consistent with that call anymore. It seems like half the time they blow the play dead and I think that's what Chuks is looking for. I'd expect better from a vet, but just speculating.

If this is the fourth year we have to watch this horrible offense because the Steelers don't have a competent offensive line to run anything else then this team needs to re-evaluate things. Inexcusable to do another patchwork job to try to fix this unit. Draft a running back in the first round and a minimum of 40% of his rookie deal is behind an offensive line that can't run block.

Ben also had a great running game which is the polar opposite of what we have.

What ever happened to playing until you hear the whistle? What if there wasn’t a flag for offsides, then Mitch gets clobbered and fumbles… meanwhile Chuks has his back to the action, pleading for a flag that could’ve never come. smh.
