I was 14 years old in 1988 when my dad took a vacation day to spend with my brother and I. He wanted to took us to St. Vincent's College on a Tuesday morning where the rain was off and on. My brother didn't want to go so it was just my dad and I. I was excited to meet and watch some of my favorite players on the team including Bubby. We went and stood near the doors and the only person that walked out was Chuck Noll. I asked him if I could have his autograph. He politely declined and said "It is against my policy to sign autographs, but I'll tell you what I can do is walk with you down to the practice field." So my father and I walked with him down the long walkway towards the bleacher area and Coach Noll asked me small talk questions like where I'm from and who is are my favorite players. As we drew closer to the stands there were reporters and people wanting to talk to him, and he simply kept his attention to me and asked me what I wanted to do after high school. I told him I wanted to be a doctor and what he said to me was sound advice. He told me "well, whatever your life's work will be, make sure you understand the fundamentals and continue to study hard." He shook my hand, wished me luck and went about his day. I think he kinda coached me up a little.

It was bittersweet to see him retire when he did, it was sad to hear his passing. There will be no other. RIP Chuck

Sounds like he lived coaching even in day to day advice..... Good story.

Very good story. Coach Noll's influence will be felt for a long time, even after his passing, and thank goodness for that.

Awesome story !!! We all wonder what kind of person one would be if famous or in a very high place. Well, as many here, I'd like to somewhat be like Chuck. Down to earth, honest, forward thinking. thanks again for sharing.

Salute the nation

great story - been seeing and hearing a lot of similar ones the last couple days !

Great story Shane. It begs the question though: Did you become a doctor?
