You can thank the ******* you elected President.

This sucks, can't believe the damage Trump is doing, day in and day out. This is what happens when you elect a ******* buffoon to run the country.

Once again, the Trump administration has sided with big money and against the interests of the American people. The FCC’s vote to end net neutrality is an egregious attack on our democracy. With this decision the internet and its free exchange of information as we have come to know it will cease to exist. The end of net neutrality protections means that the internet will be for sale to the highest bidder, instead of everyone having the same access regardless of whether they are rich or poor, a big corporation or small business, a multimedia conglomerate or a small online publication. At a time when our democratic institutions are already in peril, we must do everything we can to stop this decision from taking effect. - Senator Bernie Sanders

Federal Communications Commission repeals net neutrality rules

The approval of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s proposal marks a victory for internet service providers like AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and Verizon Communications Inc and hands them power over what content consumers can access.

Democrats, Hollywood and companies like Google parent Alphabet Inc and Facebook Inc had urged Pai, a Republican appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump, to keep the Obama-era rules barring service providers from blocking, slowing access to or charging more for certain content.

Been hearing a lot about Net Neutrality but to be completely honest I have no damn idea what it even is. I started reading the excerpt you posted hoping to learn something about it and I made it 3 words into it before realizing it was "Trump bad" partisan trash and moving on. Give me a real explanation without the political gibberish. Why is this good/bad and why should I be happy/upset about it?

The Federal Communications Commission voted 3-2 Thursday to repeal Obama-era net neutrality rules, a move that has triggered protests from consumer groups, Internet companies and Democratic lawmakers.

This is excellent news. Keep the government's grubby hands and high taxes out of the internet. Winning!

Muh legacy!

I just read that article and I still don't fully get it or see how this affects me positively or negatively. Why is this a hot button issue for the everyday American? People seem to be hysterical about it on both sides.......please somebody educate me.

Look at it this way: The only reason the government wants to control the internet is so they can mandate, regulate and tax it. It's part of the left's socialism movement. For that reason alone any rational person would be against it. Let it stay in the free market. This is a yuge win.

That makes sense....but what is the down side that has everyone so worked up? Does it affect everyday people negatively, or are they just reacting hysterically because it's the Trump administration doing it? I honestly can't tell anymore, it's become like a Pavlovian reaction whenever something is done.

You know how cable companies do the a la cart pricing or don’t offer certain channels, kinda the same thing but with the internet.

So people be charged for internet content that was previously free? Or will it restrict certain content if you don't have a particular package?

As I understand it, yes on both accounts. Or it’ll just take forever for certain websites to load or direct you to other sites.

Let's hope not because that would certainly suck.

Well, befor these "net neutrality" rules were enacted by unelected beaurocrats, i was able to access Netflix, amazon, youtube, etc without paying extra.....

The government has no business in it,much like healthcare. I could care less. I'll care more when they get their filthy hands out of healthcare. I want the money back i've been fined as well.

The government is so eager enact "net neutrality ", is makes me suspicious. Thenfact that it was enacted by unelected beaurocrats at the urging of a communist president makes me think very much less that it actually means "net neutrality ".

I don’t know, Netflix has already criticized the ruling as misguided.

Well comrade Obama did it,so I figure it's ****. The democrats are crying and the Hungarians too...

Im not sure that is relevant. As i said. I could access them before withhout paying extra. My netflix fess havent gone down since "net neutrality " was installed.

All of these tech companies could pool their money and, instead of using to fight this, they couod start their own jnternet provider. Everyone would flock to them, yes?

It is amazing to me that US citizens are practically begging unelected beaurocrats to add regulations.

Well some lunatic called in a bomb threat during the hearing about this, so people are certainly whipped into a frenzy over something. Wish I could figure out what the hell it is.

I bet the guy with the bomb doesn't understand it either.

Here are some basic facts, since there seems to be some deep-rooted misunderstanding on what net neutrality provisions mean. This is for those that actually care and want to engage in meaningful conversation. The usual mindless bluster from the Trump asshats from the SN Alt Right peanut gallery shall be ignored. Or have some peanuts thrown at them, like the monkeys they are.

ISPs are set to gain a huge amount of control over what you can and cannot access online

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-s...mp-internet-rules-why-explained-a8111066.html

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ended net neutrality under the direction of President Trump.

The decision will have a huge effect on the way the internet works, opening the door for internet service providers (ISPs) to exert a huge amount of control over the internet and dictate what you use it for.

Here’s what you need to know about net neutrality.

What is net neutrality?

Net neutrality prevents ISPs from slowing down connections for people attempting to access certain sites, apps and services, and blocking legal content.

Without the rules, they’ll no longer have to treat all internet traffic equally, and will be able to prioritise certain websites and services over others.

Many of the world’s biggest internet companies staged a day of protests earlier this year, to highlight what could happen if net neutrality was ended.

Reddit, for instance, altered its logo to make it look like it was loading extremely slowly, while the likes of Netflix and Amazon added banners to its home page.

Why is it so important?

“Without Net Neutrality, cable and phone companies could carve the internet into fast and slow lanes,” warns Save the Internet, a coalition of organisations that have been calling for the preservation of the rules.

“An ISP could slow down its competitors’ content or block political opinions it disagreed with. ISPs could charge extra fees to the few content companies that could afford to pay for preferential treatment – relegating everyone else to a slower tier of service.

“This would destroy the open internet.”

What could change?

The end of net neutrality could also have a huge impact on innovation and competition.

For instance, ISPs that have their own video services could choose to slow down customers’ connections when they try to use a competing service, such as Netflix.

Such a move would completely ruin the Netflix user experience, which could in turn lead to the company losing customers.

The end of net neutrality could completely cripple startups too, as large, established sites would be in a much better position than them to strike favourable deals with ISPs, in order to have their services prioritised over others.

There are also fears that ISPs could use their power to censor protesters and suffocate free speech, by controlling what people can and cannot put online.

What are ISPs saying?

Major ISPs including AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and Verizon Communications Inc, have been urging the FCC to revoke the rules, argue that repealing them could lead to billions of dollars in additional broadband investment and eliminate the possibility that a future presidential administration could regulate internet pricing.

They claim that the rules prevent them from finding new ways to make money, and thus prevent them from spending more to improve their networks.

“The internet without Net Neutrality isn’t really the internet. Unlike the open internet that has paved the way for so much innovation and given a platform to people who have historically been shut out, it would become a closed-down network where cable and phone companies call the shots and decide which websites, content or applications succeed,” says Save the Internet.

“This would have an enormous impact. Companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon would be able to decide who is heard and who isn’t. They’d be able to block websites or content they don’t like or applications that compete with their own offerings.”

So doing away with net neutrality basically ends the internet as we know it. It removes the provisions in place that allow for an open and free internet with a level playing field. It destroys the fundamental concept and free spirit of the net, the innovation that it was founded on. Nothing short of that. So yeah, no big deal. Go Trump! Winning!

why did we have the internet before?

Start your an ISP that will actually practice this without government intervention and the others will HAVE to follow...

Things change over time....the internet got off the ground with little oversight. Back then no one cared as it was it was a fringe group of IT nerds. I understand the current passion for deregulation, but you simply can't deregulate everything and not expect there to be fundamental shifts in how things work. Too much government is a problem, I agree with that. But throwing the entire operating structure of how the internet functions into the laps of a few mega corporations is certainly not the answer.
