It got better for a while. My guess is the other teams adjusted to this and realized if they get inside pressure on Wilson, he can't use the middle of the field. I am not sure why he regressed on not hitting the quicker routes. The outlets have still mostly been there, and he is not using them. I don't hate the pitch play but they have used it to death neutralizing any benefit. I know they have fakes off it they could run with a roll out to the opposite side. Smith sems to have forgotten his own philosophy, which is a good one if we would use it. We need to be running multiple plays out of the same formations to confuse the defense and we have stopped doing this. A play action rollout off the fake pitch would get Wilson out of the pocket and clearer lines of sight to the middle. It might also make the pitch work once in a while if they had to honor a fake. Is this all on Tomlin or is Smith regressing?
 
Tomlin needs a new haircut to shake things up and make it fun for the guys.

The reason we were good when he was hired is because he had LeBeau running the defense, Arians running the offense.

I agree on offense; Defense I have no problem with him helping. I think the offense is getting in the way of our defense with their ineptitude. The defense was more than enough Saturday but the offense **** the bed. There were certainly a few games where the defense had issues, but they have hopefully and seemingly fixed most of those.

You are one of the people on here that during the game day thread,if the Steelers are winning start yapping about how quiet it will be because the Tomlin haters won’t have anything to say. Then you tell everyone how the Tomlin haters wish they would lose so they can keep on hating. You will do this during the game and then after the game. On several threads during the week. And if the Steelers are losing or have lost you will do the same thing to multiple threads. Telling the “haters how happy they must be. I once asked you a couple weeks ago how many times you use the word “hate or haters” a week. You’ve been doing this for years.

Now you come on…start this and tell people what they can or can’t say in your thread. Hypocrite is a word that comes to mind.
Look…I get that you are just as passionate as anyone on here about our beloved team. But when that manure that you love to spread gets a little too thick….its time to be called out.
 
Yes, we all know that Tomlin isn't going anywhere, so no nasty talk, children. Let's instead cheerily discuss what he needs to change -- even though we all also know that the guy isn't going to change a damn thing, either.

SIL that whole post sounds like advocating for Mike to change his stripes (unlikely) but wishful thinking and a move to JF at QB. No hate but what he relies on now can’t even win a playoff game it is so predictable, so how can what he does now win a championship which requires 3-4 playoff wins? Seems to be an unrealistic opening assertion.

Thinking neither of those things likely happens (mike changing or moving back to JF) with a close minded coach that already moved away from the long TOP grind it out without splash plays QB for a move to Mr. moon ball aka Mr. Piss missile. This was a move by Mike to add splash to an offensive scheme that prohibits it for the most part.

With every year he digs his heels in deeper to a failing scheme…he’s at least removed splash plays from 50% of the field (the creamy middle) tho, so there’s that.

As much as you may wish his predictable, conservative, failing schemes to work it would require purple horseshoes falling out his arse every 5-10 minutes for 3-4 games in a row. It just doesn’t work like that. He may eventually luck into 1 more win but no way will his failing philosophy work
3-4 games in a row verse quality opponents.

In your heart you know it, as does pretty much every other member of SN with eyeballs. Sure he seems a nice guy and I’d love to have a few beers with him but as a coach his time has past…at least if we’re seeking someone effective in making the Steeles a contender.

That is a good assessment of what a great, very effective leader does. The problem is that those type of individuals are Unicorns.

There is no valid defense argument of no playoff wins in 7 seasons and collapsing in December over half of the past 7 seasons.

Most including me don’t hate the man, they hate the way this team has declined on his watch and is absolutely 0 threat to win a Super Bowl for the past 8 years compared to what Cowher and Noll did

Where did I say that nobody "hates" Tomlin? That said....I know I don't hate him. I do hate his schematic philosophies. His nonability to adapt...to change... or evolve. His nonability to simply learn from his own failures. Also....I blame Rooney more than I do Tomlin. Its Rooney's choice/decision to keep Tomlin around. And I don't hate Rooney. I do hate his choice/decision to keep Tomlin around though. No hate on a person ......just their choices/decisions.

As far as politics......I will leave that for a different forum.

The change that needs to happen is likely have Rooney/Khan/Weidl get in a room and decide who the new expanded coaching staff will be and then hire said coaches sans any input from Mike. Spend
money on competent position coaches (QB, WR, OL, DBs etc) and coordinators and more staff in general.

The next change is the new hires do their assigned jobs without any micromanaging from Mike. Let the coaches coach and let the cheerleader/press conference man cheerlead and do pressers.

The Steelers hire a replay assistant and take the challenge responsibilities away from Mike.

The Steelers hire a clock management assistant for Mike.

The Steelers hire a new training staff.

Come draft weekemd the Steelers send Mike on a week long Ahayuasca retreat somewhere very remote.

New coordinators revamp/spruce up and update the playbooks and install an audible system.

Have a great draft and free agency

If these changes all happen I’m positive as positive can be that the franchise will show growth and an upward momentum we haven’t seen in over a decade.

I just don’t think we need a specific thread to discuss Tomlin’s shortcomings and what he needs to change since most of us know he’s not changing.

My apologies for coming across condescending. I was simply trying to have one thread where we could discuss strategies and the x and os that could be changed by Tomlin without having to argue about whether he should or shouldn’t be the coach. Real football discussion not the endless debate should he stay or should he go. I enjoy debating the actual football part and the strategy part. Divorced from the angst of the rest. Every thread devolves into this partisan divide. Much like politics.

I hear what you're saying and I can tell you that I don’t hate Mike Tomlin! Hate is a very strong word and for me that’s reserved for the ******** that crashed into the twin towers in NYC. That’s my hate!
As for Mike Tomlin, it’s always been about fair criticism with me.
I’d love to see him succeed as we all would since that means our team succeeds. I’m just at the end of my patience with him and don’t think Mike will
make these positive changes.
I hope I’m wrong and he does make the changes.
Make some positive hires like a competent OL coach, a DC and let him run his defense.
If Artie Smith leaves hire a young and competent OC and let him run his offense.
That would be a big start in the right direction for me.

Did you read my thoughts in my original post? They mirror yours to a degree. I said He needs to get away from the reliance on splash. Lolley had the numbers on teams who made the playoffs with losing streaks like this. Most were almost entirely due to change in fortunes due to reliance on turnovers. We need to get back to winning the games on routine plays routinely. Not having to have the splash plays. I fully agree with that.

I don’t think anyone is accusing anyone of hating Tomlin.

“Hater” is actually slang for “critic.”
To be a Tomlin hater means the same as being a Tomlin critic.
I know this because that would be of my mindset if I were to say “Tomlin hater” and I believe I have … I would mean “Tomlin critic.”

Now if “Tomlin critic” were to be repeated over and over it would soon become offensive as well.

Well it is quieter here when they win and certain select posters disappear. Can you deny that? Aside from this weekend when I was at the game I am here win or lose. I have no problem with the vast majority of critics as they are also cheering when we win. It is only the ones who only “cheer” the negative. It is pisses me off. Yeah as I have said I am not guilt free. I fully admit it.
