How many do you think they will keep at each position? I think there are a few xfactor players and some position flexibility spots. I dont see the need to keep any corners beyond Allen, Taylor, Gay and the best of the rest. Thomas, Will Allen give that luxury by being able to play like nickle corners and can excell on sp. Teams. Similarly, do you count Archer as a wr. Or Tailback. We have two big bodied tailbacks that can catch and block and between the two of them you dont need a third down back. On the Oline you have the starting five and they will likely keep position flexible guys after that.

Archer will need to get a RB spot on the roster but will just line up in the slot sometimes, I imagine. Too crowded at WR, not crowded enough at RB beyond Bell/Blount

We also have Will Johnson, so we have an all purpose back a power back a full back and a scat back. We should be good with that mix and have enough variety to do ok. One of the nice things about that mix is Bell, Johnson and Blount are supposed to be capable as receivers and Archer may be as well.

Will Johnson on the roster as a FB , HB or TE wouldn't be a big deal. He's capable. PRoblem is he doesn't seem to be used very much, if at all.

Last year he had zero carries .

8 receptions on 11 targets ,, with one touch down .

If blount stays healthy,, I don't forsee any more carries.. With a stable full of TE's , and Tomlin wanting to get the ball passed to Archer as much as possible etc....
Whats the point?
I guess he is a blocking back only. I guess I need to find some Snaps numbers...

You have to be a lousy lousy player to get cut immediately as a 3rd Round pick. That means the team concedes they ****** up royally. Did Bruce Davis get cut in his rookie year? He was what a 4th Rounder? 3rd? Can't remember but he sure didn't stick around long.

He was inactive his rookie year,, not sure if that means practice squad.. Then cut at the end of next camp. He was a 3rd round pick.

IMO...Archer is the # 3 RB but with Johnson listed as a FB, they could still use one more. The offense is easier to slot than the defense, there's some damn good players that might be victims of the numbers game. We traditionally consider keeping 10 DB's depending on SP skills. This year that will be difficult because of the three vets (Troy, Ike, Allen). These guys need some good back-up and with only Golden and Shamarko seemingly close to playing, some talent needs to be nurtured. Problem is....who will that be ?

CB's are like LBers this year, stacked up too high to keep them all. If we keep 5 of each, who will go and who will stay ?

Assuming these are our core.............

28 Allen, Cortez CB 6-1 196 25 4 The Citadel
22 Gay, William CB 5-10 190 29 8 Louisville
24 Taylor, Ike CB 6-2 195 34 12 Louisiana-Lafayette
25 McCain, Brice CB 5-9 187 27 6 Utah

only one of these guys gets to hang out.

41 Blake, Antwon CB 5-9 198 23 3 Texas-El Paso
39 Green, Isaiah CB 5-10 180 24 2 Fresno State
31 Richardson, Shaquille CB 6-0 194 22 R Arizona
30 Smith, Devin CB 5-11 186 23 1 Wisconsin

From what I hear, Richardson and Blake have some talent.

S is a little easier if we keep 5 but I'm guessin' 4 because of the talent at CB. Dangerfield or Ventrone will probably see PS time.

LBer is a nightmare, a bunch up at ILB and marginal OLB numbers but picking 9 as usual will be interesting.

Let's assume these 4 are the starters...'cause they probably will be.

95 Jones, Jarvis LB 6-2 245 24 2 Georgia
50 Shazier, Ryan LB 6-1 237 21 R Ohio State
94 Timmons, Lawrence LB 6-1 234 28 8 Florida State
93 Worilds, Jason LB 6-2 262 26 5 Virginia Tech

then which 5 of these guys do you hang onto ?

54 Carter, Chris LB 6-1 248 25 4 Fresno State
57 Garvin, Terence LB 6-3 221 23 2 West Virginia
34 Jones, Howard LB 6-4 238 24 R Shepherd
55 Moats, Arthur LB 6-2 250 26 5 James Madison
45 Molls, Dan LB 6-0 238 23 1 Toledo
49 So'oto, Vic LB 6-3 263 26 3 Brigham Young
51 Spence, Sean LB 5-11 231 24 3 Miami
98 Williams, Vince LB 6-1 250 24 2 Florida State
56 Zumwalt, Jordan LB 6-4 235 22 R UCLA

I'm thinkin' not only will they need to be ST's demons but can they play both sides and both OLB and ILB too. Good problems to have but they all can't stay.

Johnson by no means is a scat back. He's not a guy I'd want lined up in the backfield to get carries, plus he has been working with the tight ends this year. Behind their top three, the Steelers have nothing worthwhile at running back.

LOL...You might get one or two LBers on the PS but you ain't never gettin' 6 out of 8 spots.

don't forget about these guys..we need to stash at least one or two of them after we pick 4 or 5 of the best.

84 Brown, Antonio WR 5-10 186 26 5 Central Michigan
10 Bryant, Martavis WR 6-4 211 22 R Clemson
11 Wheaton, Markus WR 5-11 182 23 2 Oregon State
16 Moore, Lance WR 5-9 190 30 9 Toledo

there's a couple of these guys I would like to stash, at least Brown.

15 Brown, Justin WR 6-3 209 23 1 Oklahoma
88 Coale, Danny WR 6-0 187 26 1 Virginia Tech
18 Goodwin, C.J. WR 6-3 190 24 R California University (PA)
85 Heyward-Bey, Darrius WR 6-2 219 27 6 Maryland
19 Moore, Kashif WR 5-9 180 25 1 Connecticut
14 Moye, Derek WR 6-5 210 25 2 Penn State
17 Sampson, Lanear WR 5-11 205 24 1 Baylor

..and these guys after we pick 6..

97 Heyward, Cameron DE 6-5 288 25 4 Ohio State
91 Tuitt, Stephon DE 6-5 303 21 R Notre Dame
96 Thomas, Cam DT 6-4 330 27 5 North Carolina

that only leaves 3 of these guys, at least one more should be shelved for a rainy day.

69 Arnfelt, Brian DE 6-4 298 24 2 Northwestern
79 Hemer, Ethan DE 6-6 285 23 R Wisconsin
71 Mauro, Josh DE 6-6 282 23 R Stanford
67 Williams, Nick DE 6-4 309 24 2 Samford
74 McCullers, Daniel DL 6-7 352 21 R Tennessee
92 Fangupo, Hebron DT 6-0 324 29 2 Brigham Young
65 Lapuaho, Al DT 6-2 301 22 1 Utah State
62 Philon, Roy DT 6-3 291 23 R Louisville

They don't do it often, but maybe they should try shopping some of the glut of talent at ILB. Not everyone can be as fortunate as the Steelers at that position.

Who would you trade? Last year they had Troy playing ILB at times because nobody else could do it well. I'll wait to see what we have. Players like Zumwalt, Shazier, H. Jones and Spence have never even played a real NFL down.

He only had Zumwalt going to the PS.

My bad...sorry 81, I read it wrong. So your sayin' goodbye to Carter ?

Agree Vader, this will be an interesting camp. From zero to hero hopefully.

I think Carter is the odd man out. We've all seen how badly he's played in game situations. Last spot is between he and Garvin you would have to think with all the glowing reports of Howard Jones.

Did not say he was a scat back, that would be Archer. Williams is a full back / tight end who used to be a wide receiver in college. The kid is big, strong, and has decent hands. The point is we have Bell our feature back, Blount a good power guy who could also fill in as a feature back with an injury to Bell, Archer a potential scat back that is right now an unknown commodity, and Williams who is a full back. Three of the four are known to have decent hands and the fourth might as well. That would give us some very good 3rd down options as all of them could be legitimate passing targets, and could be a threat on a draw play if a team sells out on the pass.

I just think the four of them would not be a bad way to go with the backfield for this season.

I don't feel real warm and fuzzy going into the season with just those 4. Poole or Maysonet, whoever is the better back and is better at ST's would be nice to have around in case of injury. RB's get dinged, already Bell and Blount have seen bench time in practice and I don't care to see what Archer has as a full time back..at least not long term.

Someone just sent me this...http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/a...pittsburgh_steelers_auto_module_head_16961077

I think you mean Johnson. I also think 4 could be enough granted everyone is healthy. In that case they will have someone on the practice squad.

Will Johnson, Brain Fart big time. Such is life when one is tired. Sorry about that folks.
