The Steelers culture is better than most. The problems are not a Steelers or Tomlin issue. I believe it’s a Gen Z issue. Many of them are difficult to work with. This is well established in the overalll workforce. Tons of articles written on the challenges of working with millennials and gen z. Not all of course, but a great many have been immersed in an education focused on self esteem and putting yourself first.
We have a lot of young people who can’t handle being told No. So many athletes now see themselvs as the team they care about. Their own stats and social media brand is the goal. Free agency means they feel their current team is just temporary. You do you and if your current team doesn’t like it, you’ll be elsewhere soon. So long as you personal brand is strong, it’s all good.
Again, this isn’t all, but it absolutely is a significant number of yiung people who now feel this way. Ask them to not check their phone in a meeting and YOU are the jerk.
There‘s always differences in generations but that divide is huge after Gen X. Part of why so many teams want that young coach, even if he’s not very experienced, is the hope they can connect with young players.
Winning covers a lot of sins. It’s easy for everybody to appear to be United when things are going great. That’s why it’s not always good to assume the top teams have these great cultures. Let them go on a losing streak and see how united they are.
Tomlin is not perfect but he does a better job than most in this area.
