Our new punter looks to be an upgrade.

And in 2015, he had 13. I don't care about averages and net averages. We don't have to "flip the field" very often because of our offense. We don't need someone averaging 50 yards a punt, what we need is someone who can consistently put the ball inside the 20 without getting touchbacks. YOU feel that Monday's stats are better, I do not. Monday isn't blowing Berry away, Berry has had several 60+ yard punts, and even had a 79 yard punt last year for us. I'm not concerned about his leg strength, but I sure do love his accuracy, and ability to put backspin on the ball and keep it out of the EZ.

And again, you address the Duke special teams as part of your argument for Monday being better, and again I'll point out that Berry was at the power house known as EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY!!!!! Do you honestly think they are SO MUCH better in their kick coverages that they singly handedly helped Berry only have 12 touchbacks his entire college career? Hell, add in his NFL stats, put two more on the board for Berry, at 14 touchbacks in FOUR YEARS, it's still only ONE MORE than Monday had LAST YEAR ALONE, and still less than HALF of what Monday had in his college career.

Now you're trying to say that the best punter not drafted signed with us? What about Tom Hackett, was not drafted, a TWO TIME Ray Guy award winner, signed with the Jets as an UDFA. He had 106 punts inside the 20, 26 touchbacks, an average of 48 yards per punt, had 4 rushes for 106 yards, rated on several sites as the number one punting prospect. And that was just the first name I happened to grab off the list of punters that weren't drafted, funny how that works.

If you check the facts, you'll see Berry had several more touchbacks at Eastern Kentucky. The Steelers coverage team make a huge difference. Just check if you dare and you'll see. Of course, this does not suit your agenda, but hey, its facts.

One bad year for 13 touchbacks and two good years 6 touchbacks for Monday suggests he won't issue with touchbacks in the pros.

Like I said the pro average is 5-6 touchbacks per year, and I'll bet you a large sum of money Berry has more than 2 touchbacks this year if he punts it at least 59 times.

You're cherry picking, and if I were to list Berry's worst year in college, and base 100% of my opinion on that year as you are, no way he's in an NFL camp!

Until then, I think the guy with the better leg and hang time, combined with faster get off time, and 4th down options, and no career blocks ( Berry has a block on him ) as an upgrade. That man is Monday.

Barry kicks the ball as an Aussie does, with a natural backward rotation. It makes the ball die inside the 10 regardless of the punt coverage abilities of your team. I've always felt this backward rotation of the football was an advantage for teams punting with an Aussie style kicker, to pin their opponent.

It comes down to if you like an Aussie style punter or an American boomer.

I will wait to see them kick first, on the same field, before taking the job of a proven punter.

wrong again, I have listed Berry's college stats a few times in this thread. There's a reason you didn't list them in this post...

This hole is getting mighty deep for you, I also noticed you didn't try to dispute the best UDFA punter going to the Jets, at least we're making progress. Slow, snails pace progress...

Listing stats is one thing. With Monday, you cherry picking for one stat in one year only in his 4-year college career. It's broken record.

Your failure to admit that NFL kick coverage greatly limits touchbacks is a weakness of yours. It clearly does.

You also fail to acknowledge the Steelers have a great kicker with 50+ yard range for field goals and often go for it out of range on 4th down, limiting the chances for Berry to get a touchback.

Monday is very good at dropping them inside the 20. It seems there is a little debate who has the better leg strength, get off time, and who's more valuable on 4th down plays.

With you it's all about touchbacks, and like I said the NFL average per year is 5-6 and Monday had two years with Duke kick coverage with 6 touchbacks.

We'll see what happens in camp.

PS: Hackett is a short and fat player. I heard he didn't interview well. Height is an asset as a punter in case you didn't know. I liked the A&M punter ( Kaser ) better, and his name could be found in some of my mock drafts in rounds 6 or 7 at times.

"The main reason I'm playing this sport is because deep down, I'm fat and I don't like running very far," Hackett told ESPN's Chris Fowler during a college football awards show. "So I'm running 20-odd yards on and 20-odd yards off, and that's about all I got for you." - Tom Hacket, Punter

More data:

Duke has allowed only 80 return yards on Monday's punts over the course of the past two seasons, while Berry had 19 punts returned for 165 yards last year.

^^ Monday has a leg to back punt return men up and may also have better hang time.

According to his draft profile, he put about 47 percent of his punts inside the 20, among the best in college football, which is roughly what Berry accomplished. He had a league-high 19 punts of 50+ yards last season. He is also said to have a quick snap-to-punt time and has allowed very little return yardage over the past two seasons.

Dropping them inside the 20 is not an issue, it's a strength

Of greatest concern is the fact that Berry’s worst performances came late in the season, particularly in the playoffs, and his struggles undoubtedly contributed to the Steelers’ issues in the Divisional round, which they ended up losing.

^^^ Berry shrunk when we needed him most.

There is only one person here cherry picking stats, it's you. It's how you treat stats all the time, not just in this argument, but in all your arguments. You latch onto one thing and that's the only thing that you can argue. There's not bigger picture at all. I showed Berry's FULL college stats, never claimed them to be amazing. I also showed his NFL stats, and once again, never claimed he was the best in the NFL.

You keep bringing up Duke's coverage, and how they aren't a good team, but when I point out that Berry played for Eastern Kentucky University, you ignore it and sweep it under the rug because it doesn't fit you agenda here.

So here it is, my final post on the matter, Monday MIGHT, and I emphasize MIGHT, have a stronger leg (Berry did have the longest punt in the NFL last year), but it's not something that is going to be utilized often if he plays for the Steelers. There was only one team that punted LESS than we did last year. The reason is because of our offense. It is one of, if not THE best in the NFL. We don't have to consistently flip the field, the majority of the time we will try to pin the opponent deep in their own territory. THIS is why the touchback numbers are so important, for OUR team.

Monday had A LOT of touchbacks, and his numbers actually got WORSE the more he played at Duke, sure he had a couple years early on where his touchbacks were low, and then he doubled those numbers. Again, his final year of college, when he had 13 touchbacks, is ONE less than Berry had his WHOLE college AND NFL career (so far). I don't know how much more plain I can make it.

We don't punt often, we don't punt from our own territory often, distance doesn't matter that much to our team.

And ENOUGH of the bullshit "Monday is a better fourth down option" ****. He had TWO RUSHES FOR SEVEN ******* YARDS, and threw 4 whole passes. Berry has better rushing numbers and only threw one pass, neither one is scaring any defenses into thinking they better watch out for the fake.
