Paul Zeise: Steelers' standard under Mike Tomlin has been lowered

It looked like the Chiefs never ran that same play twice. Their creativity in the red one was so impressive, yet we Steelers fans were again forced to watch the same stupid, repetitive play calling the Steelers always run. I think MT truly doesn’t believe in game-planning. I think he feels as if he can coach the Steelers to just dominate and impose their will on opposing teams. They can’t

In Tomlin's defense, I don't think his issue is lack of game planning. I think these same stupid repetitive plays are all that he is capable of. You want a coach that can look serious during his pressers and rattle off drivel about execution and perseverance, Coach T is your man. You want an above average coach that can provide vision, strategy, and the leadership necessary to lead to win games when they matter most, well, we'll have to go out and find that person because we don't currently have him.

Well and the other thing that gets me is how easy it looks for other teams. Like **** Najee is a 700 yard receiving back waiting to happen but nothing really. And the plays are just never really open. And every single deep ball is a back shoulder jump ball. How about a ****** post pattern once in a while.

Mike Tomlin Has several flaws
1. He is stubborn and doesn’t adapt quickly enough when things aren’t what they planned for or someone counters their schemes effectively
2. He doesn’t get top notch assistant coaches, and really slacks on getting guys who develop younger players well
3. He gets caught up in college pedigree and production
4. He plays the game to keep it close until the fourth quarter… this includes an insanely conservative offense that rarely scores early and takes its foot off the gas with a lead
5. He selects his backups on special teams ability rather than as the best players in case of injury… it leads to depth issue’s

so why was he hired?

Because he "blew them away" in the interview.

Tomlin was a fringe candidate when he interviewed with the Steelers following the 2006 season. He had worked as an NFL coordinator for one season, with the Vikings. He blew away the Steelers' brass during the interview process.

He is not a terrible coach. He does not go for it on 4th down from his own 18 yard line while leading. But his primary qualification for being an NFL coach seems to be his verbal skills - "interview process," press conference bon mots. I give Tomlin credit for rallying the 2013 team from an 0-4 start to a .500 record and for winning 8 games in 2019 with Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges at QB.

However, he is not a good coach and certainly not a great coach. Has he ever upset a team in the playoffs? No. Has he beaten a superior team in the playoffs? No. Has he lost a TON of games to vastly inferior opponents in the regular season? Damn right. Has he squandered some incredibly talented teams (2010, 2011, 2018)? Definitely.

Is he a coach who gets the most out of his teams? No, I don't think so. If his stars dominate, he is okay. If any of his stars don't dominate, he is in trouble. If his stars have a mediocre game, he is blown out.

He's just not a good coach. 3-8 over his last 11 playoff games. Repeat, THREE playoff wins in 12 years with a HOF QB. Zero Super Bowl appearances. Not good.

I just don't know if I believe he said that. If he did, he's an idiot and should have been fired on the spot.

Hey, I want Tomlin to be gone as much as anyone, but I just can't believe any coach would say something like that.
He said something to the effect that if a guy doesn’t know the position by this level its not their responsibility to get them there… next to bruce arians defending the game plannthat ben got sacked 9 times because the wrs were open deep all day when he said that slants don’t work in the nfl, it was about as obtuse as coach excuses came

Tomlin is just a dan bylsma with a little more technical knowledge… i half expect him to say that all they have to do is get to their game just about every halftime interview

You know, I suspect that Mike Tomlin does not trust his players. He thinks his defense is going to "fool" the offense by having Vince Williams covering Stefan Diggs and when that blows up, he thinks the players just need to "execute better," i.e., the "we'll fool them" strategy will work so long as every one of the 40 moving parts is perfect.

I compare that to Cowher's teams. He knew who his great players were and had them take the game over - Troy, Harrison, Bettis, Ben, Ward.

Remember that game where Cowher told Troy to cover Antonio Gates, every @#$%ing play? Troy was all over Gates, every play. Gates was so irritated by the 4th quarter he took a swing at Troy.

And the Steelers won, beating a very good San Diego team on the road. Well, kinda road given the number of Steelers fans present.

Minkah is a great player. Tell him, "You have Kelce." Put Haden on Hill, Edmunds single-high safety. Sutton taking the #2 WR, Norwood the slot. Trust your guys to do the job.

I just want to know what everyone wants Tomlin to say? Again, this is not a defense of him, but I go into it knowing that a coach is going to give very limited, general information. They aren't going to tell you the intimate details of what is going on with any aspect of the team. Frankly, I don't listen to a damn thing he says other than injury updates. I didn't with Cowher, either.

The best part of the Pirates' season being over, besides the obvious, is Paul Zeise on the radio every night.
Dude knows his sports but he's also funny as hell.

Tomlin definitely tries to scheme and trick teams to death… but when the gameplan is off it’s disastrous… think about the Tebow game… they decided to eliminate the run game completely and when Tebow was beating them with the pass they never adjusted

Or even yesterday… they clearly singled out the chiefs run defense as something they could exploit, and they couldn’t… yet they kept at it into thecthird quarter when they were buried

Usually on offense, cowher just played to his team’s strengths, other teams strengths and weaknesses be damned… its why he struggled against really good teams in the afccg but got there a lot.

On D he relied on the 3/4 scheme to stop the run and his pass rush to bolster the pass d. He had wrinkles but not nearly to the extent we see with some of Tomlin’s…

Why should Art 2 Trust Mike Tomlin to rebuild this Team which definitely needs a good bit of rebuild. When it was Mike Tomlin that let it get to this in the first place

We need 1 Safety
2 CB
1 inside linebacker. Really 2 because Bush is a bust

NT

3 or 4 linemen. Definitely a center , guard and probably another guard

Another WR, cause johnson. Can’t catch , clay pool is a one trick pony

And of course a QB. When we get a QB who on this current staff is a QB GURU and plans to develop him 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

So with a team needing this much why would we trust a coach to rebuild it that happens to be the guy that allowed it to get this bad

Based on their own free agents and substandard play they need a C,RT,RG,a number 1 WR,NT,DE,SS, and 2 corners and a QB.

Not really that bad… if alualu comes back and they retain adams the nt position is fine.
If tuitt plays the De position becomes a strength especially if loudermilk takes a step forward

People keep saying we need to replace edmunds but he is an average ss… honestly if you find an upgrade, great, but it isnt a need… some positions are going to be average… is he disappointing as a first round pick, sure, but he is serviceable

If we resign Witherspoon, who legitimately looks as if he could be a starter, then we are in pretty good shape at CB though it would be nice to bring in a solid Vet to bump Sutton back to slot…

On the oline all we need is a high end guard or tackle… you dont need that many great olinemen to build a great line.. we have a lot of serviceable parts.. we just need an anchor and one or two of our young guys to improve a bit…

What we may need is one or two ilbs if Bush doesn’t make a huge leap forward next year

Witherspoon would solve one spot. Any player associated with a year off and no spring chicken should be IMO looked at as a question mark. Replace them or fortify the position thru the draft or free agency.👊

Since the team has been all his, i.e. Cowher's players and coaches moved on, we can see that Tomlin's ceiling is about 10-11 wins and a first-round playoff loss.
It's simply as good as he knows how to be.

I have a theory on all this. It says - most guys in the nfl today can improve some, and the right coaching will do that for them.

Maybe we need a coaching staff that gets the best out of the players.

Banking on Tuitt is a gamble. Heyward had a monster year, but is not a spring chicken. We definitely need to start planning for the future at DL.
I agree about SS especially if we fill other holes. Edmunds would look better with a stronger support cast.
CB is still a problem Haden is alright, but losing a step, witherspoon looks like he could be solid, but we don't have much else. Pierre seems to be up and down for me. Sometimes he looks like the worst corner in the league other games he makes some plays. Will be interesting to see if we keep him and how he develops.
We need at least one stud MLB which we don't have I don't see Bush ever being the answer unless he has a miraculous attitude change.
Oline is rough. I feel like we need 3 upgrades to be competitive.
WR is iffy. We have some talent they just need to use it properly. Not sure if coaching can correct them or not

Tuitt should be gone. I just see no way they let him come back. Plus, he saves a chunk of change by cutting him. Hopefully, they are working on signing some of these guys as we speak. Witherspoon should be a starter. Adams wants to come back so make it happen. He is a good backup, if not a potential starter - although I'd rather have someone bigger in the middle. LeGlue isn't a superstar but he came in similar to Adams and was one of our best OL (not saying much, I know) and should be signed for something if he is a FA. I'd sign JuJu. Washington is gone (unless Tomlin ****** him up so bad he gets no other offers) and who could blame him. RayRay should only be brought back with the sole intention of special teams. We need at least 4 better WR's than him on the roster and maybe another on the PS. Miller should be given a legit shot in OTA's and camp. It made zero sense for them to bring him in, have him make one incredible 1-yard catch (yes, it was pretty spectacular for a 1 yard gain), and then never see him again. There are just so many issues from this year. It all starts at the top and with coaching. What is Rooney allowing? What is Tomlin doing and allowing?

I might start 20 posts asking about Tomlin and 15 about Canada.maybe 10 about Butler
