Pens Hockey 2021?

I disagree. This team is plenty good enough to play Sullivan's style of hockey. Problem is, Sullivan's style of hockey is becoming a bygone era, especially in the playoffs. Teams that are winning are big, fast, skilled and physical. Sully's teams are sorta fast and mostly skilled, certainly not big or physical. The Islanders are beating the Pens up, and while the Pens seem to hold up for a while in each game, eventually they break. They need to be able to give it back. I'm not talking about a bunch of goons, but they need a couple Tom Wilson types. Yeah, Wilson is an ******* that has a need to play dirty for whatever reason, but when he decides to play the game, he's a good player.
agree 100% with this. Adding that Jarry isn't Murray/Flower and you cannot have your Defenders jumping into the zone and leaving Jarry on an island too often. pardon the pun.

We're done. The Pens D is that bad. The Pens spend the whole ******* period peppering their goalie with shots, the Isles get a shot on goal,,,score...I've seen this ***** before and it goes back to the Mario/Jagr days...

Plus the Pens offense lacks a presence in front of the net and for some reason can't win faceoffs consistently. Why is that?

The D is not bad, its just the stupid mind boggling mistakes and turnovers at the worst time that always cost them. And I noticed the lack of net front presence too. In the regular season, there were always guys in front of the net, even Crosby and Guentzel were a lot of the time...

Now its just long shots from the blue line and outside mostly.

Doesn't matter, after seeing the first 5 you cant make me believe the Pens can win the next two.

And you watch the Isle's get destroyed by the B's the next round.

Man, it just kills me that we exposed Fleury. I know the thinking behind it, Murray was younger, cheaper and just won two Cups. How could anyone see the guy completely falling apart like he did? Meanwhile, Flower is killing it in Vegas, having perhaps his best season as a Pro.

And why can't the Pens ever find a guy like Sorokin? It seems that teams always come up with a guy no one has ever heard of that manages to completely shut down "the best player in the world." Happens all the time. Teams find guys like Sorokin, the Pens have Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith. SMDH.

If the NYI win, I'm a NYI fan for a series. Hate the Bs

I mean, the Pens did draft two goalies this year as their first and second picks. Who knows, maybe their shotgun approach will net a goalie that gives the Pens a fighting chance at reaching the SC finals in a few years. crossing fingers.

I still think exposing Fleury was the best for all parties involved at that point. Without Murray the Pens don't win those two cups. Period. I love Flower but he just couldn't get it done for years and was the worst playoff goalie in hockey for a 5 year stretch. The worst. I think without the expansion draft they probably would have hung on to Fleury for one more year and who knows after that but at the time with the circumstances.......it made a lot of sense. JRGM says it's his biggest regret. Murray flamed out and no one really saw that coming. Jarry is a talented goalie. However he is one of the least mentally tough goalies I've ever seen. Fleury on the other hand has looked great ever since and I'm happy for him and hope he wins a cup as long as it's not against the Pens.

Surprised? NOPE. Saw it the entire game, the inability to get up by more than 1 goal. Sure there were a lot of shots but they were either laser wide or weak shots into the pads. Many other times shooting right into his chest. And WHEN they put a net presence, the Isles just packed it in with 3 guys, blocked shots and pushed the Pen out. Defensively i am sick of saying it about the d trying to be forwards. ONLY Tanev and Crosby cover for them. Pens played almost their best game and still can't beat a rookie in his 4th start.

Still have at least 1 game to play, Pens won in NY also. If I had my say I am loading up line Mario/Jagr style.

Malkin - Sid - Rust
Jake - Carter - Zucker
Tanev - Blue - ZAR
McCann - Rod - Lafferty (at least he hits)

Defense - Shame they can't bring in PO, but I would bench Petterson for either Juuso Riikola or Chad Ruhwedel

A loss should put Sully on the hot seat. 3 straight opening series losses. Living in the past does not work. You were the #1 seed against a team you beat 6-2 during regular season. Looks like the Isles made adjustments, how about Pens??? Last night was the first game that the Isles didn't take a chance of hitting everything that moves and still stuck around and won. I am not sold on Jarry at all. Too many mental lapses and what does he think he is Hex trying to play the puck so much? Rookies will have to be steals or find that veteran who still has 2-3 years left. Season still alive, i will wait until totally over to give opinions on player/coaching moves

I don't think we need to worry about that any time soon. Without a complete overhaul of the roster with an infusion of speed, skill and physical play, the Pens aren't going to sniff the SC. They did well this year winning their division, but in the end they are destined to come up small in the playoffs yet again.

We controlled the game for like 85-90% of the time, but we gave up a 3 on 1 which NY botched, a breakaway, another breakaway that the pass missed, and the horrible turnover by Jarry. The team just seems to have total mental blocks at bad times. We had around 50 shots on goal and i think i saw where we missed the net 22 additional times. That is alot of pucks around the net just could not get anything through. If they play like they did tomorrow night you have to like the chances. Just need to crack their goalie's confidence

I have a different take on that too. This year with the messed up schedule where you are only playing teams in your Division they got to beat up on bad teams at the end, and then the Caps got beat up and injured, and the Bruins got hot too late. In a regular season with a full schedule I don't thing they would have been anywhere near the top if they had to play some of the better teams in the league. This team, especially with the goal tending, is middle of the road at best....

They're done pretty much. We will see how much heart these guys have or if they have checked out to the golf course.

Perhaps. But every team in the division got to beat up on those bad teams. Going into the season, no one gave the Pens a chance to even make the playoffs much less win the division. Now that they won the division, it's because they beat bad teams? Everyone in the division got to play the same bad teams, the same number of times. The Pens did pretty well against the good teams. 6-2 vs Caps, 6-2 vs NYI, 4-4 vs Boston. I seem to remember both the Caps and B's losing in awe inspiring fashion to Buffalo late in the season, and as far as injuries, the Pens had more than any team in the division. The Pens won a tough division with two really ****** teams. But every division had those teams.

Winning the division in hockey or just winning HF in hockey is very overrated IMHO. It's a 7 game series and both the Pens and Isles have won on the road in the series. So does it really matter that the Pens got 1 extra home game that they probably won't even get to use (Game 7)?

The Pens aren't built for playoff hockey. They aren't the fastest, most talented, toughest, or intelligent team. They really have no identity. The cup winning teams were smart, fast and unshakeable. They would dump the puck and chase. They would get people like Horny in front of the net. They would fight for pucks and they were mentally tough. Overall they were fundamentally sound. This team is a shell of those teams. TOs, horrible defense, dumb goaltending, and shooting just be shooting is killing them. Not sure who to blame but this team is not a cup contender and they'll be lucky to win the next game.

No, the Pens' goaltending is inferior. It's as simple as that. You don't outshoot and out-chance a good team for four periods at a 2:1 ratio with a bad defense.

I was in agreement when they left Fleury unprotected and went with the hot hand in Murray. Then I thought Jarry was good enough to get the job done. So far, I've been wrong. But I'm not going to give up on the series when it's 3 games to 2, either.

Exactly. Let's see what fight they have left in them. While I personally don't think this team can go all the way this year, I give them credit for bouncing back and having a nice season. Win or lose the rest of this series it's not a wasted year. This is such a spoiled fanbase. This has been the premier hockey franchise for the last 30 years. Unbelievable consistency. Same with the Steelers. I'm still salty about how JRGM was dogged out by the fans earlier in the season only to see his moves pay off without too much credit thrown his way. It's ok to just be grateful for the awesome hockey you've been able to see instead of kicking people on the way out or on the way down.
I just don't understand why fans have given up already. In the first four of the five Cup-winning postseasons, the Penguins had to overcome a 3-2 series deficit at some point along the way. The Islanders are a good team. The Penguins are a good team. Two games have gone to New York in overtime. I'll wait until they win one more game before I start complaining about what a mediocre ****** season it was.

Given up? Not really, but judging from what has transpired thus far, my expectations have dropped with each game. They're down to one game, win or go home. Which leads to a game 7 win or go home.

Not much lost when you haven't gone that far yet.

While the other team that has looked decidedly better is resting up waiting on the winner.

I wanted the Caps and Bs to beat the hell out of each other for 6 or 7 games then the Pens get past the Isles and be waiting on them...

I should know better to assume something like that would happen given the way they shyt the bed the last few years in the first round.

I have not been confident in the Pens since the 2016 2017 seasons.

We traded or gave away the MOJO of those championship teams. Kessel&Hornqvist being the last of what made that team special...gone.

Here. My expectations aren’t high.
But I also grew content after 2017. When the guys were getting something going before trading for Brassard, I was digging a 3peat.

But all that got butchered. I appreciate what the core group has brought to us as fans. Even though there was some frustrating moments.

The one playoff year that still bothers me was getting swept by Boston in 2013

The Rangers debacles right after that were hard to take too...

Now we have the Isle's travesty's to remember.

Team hasn't been the same since those trades that sunk the teams chances of 3 in a row.

Still that was probably the most enjoyable 2 years of watching pro-sports as I've ever had.

It's right up with Superbowl XL and "One For The Thumb"

i dont watch hockey much. I used to back in Mario's day. I watched monday night. Feels like everyone waiting for sid to do something. Not getting enough from our other lines. Just my observation.

Well,I won't get to see this evenings game. I'll be following on the sports ticker. They'd better...

I will also not see as my wife and I are hitting the casino for my birthday and can do it mask-free as we are both fully vaccinate. I am sure it will be on there and i will try not to pay attention. Goal is to watch when we get home around 8ish. If I see too much I will just listen on NHL Sirius and then pick up when we get home. Hoping for a game 7! more hockey always better than starting to trash the Jarry, defense, softness, Sully system, and the please trade 58 and 71 talk....But it is coming!
