Pens Hockey 2021?

We definitely need some physical guys. Hextall should make a push
With what? Not being smart after my last tirade (I'm totally cool and reserved now :). ) but who can we trade?

The Pens don’t need to dangle Crosby, Geno like you think. A lot of hockey teams always look for draft picks or bottom line guys in return.

A guy like Delauriers would be easy to get a hold off. Tough heavy hitter and drops the gloves with anyone. Can play like Kunitz as a bottom 6 guy too

At this point, Sullivan should be on a short leash. Trotz has exposed his pure speed system
About 3 years ago unfortunately. Again, I'm not trying to be a smart ***, but they were totally exposed and unfortunately I was in attendance at the Verizon center or whatever it was called at the time... Chung Fu Palace? Who knows... ;)

Well I guess its time to head on over to the Pirates thread and lament about their struggles...

No actually I think I will pass....

Maybe go to the football section and try to figure out how Tomlin can manage another winning season with the hardest schedule in the league....

Screw it, someone PM me when one of the 3 become relevant again.....

It was fun gents. I agree that huge changes are needed. This team is left behind by the league. Hextall will make changes. It is probably why he was hired.

Trotz learned from his failures with the caps. The wuhan palace they swept us, cause Trotz knew the way to beat the Pens is to rough them up. He did it in 2018 letting Wilson run loose. The Pens were still a little pushy at the time. But lost their mojo

The Islanders made the Pens look like the slow, small and older team they are. Game 4 was an embarrassment and they fell asleep for 3 important minutes tonight. I like Sully, but they may need a change there. I think we are stuck with the Big 3 because Mario wants them to retire Penguins. The Islanders really don't have many flashy names, but they play a system and are physical that shredded the Pens. Odd man breaks, breakaways, left in front of the net by themselves- the Islanders made them look silly. Jarry was exposed this series. He has a lot of work to do to be the #1 goalie. It's a shame DeSmith was hurt and they didn't trust the rookie. The off-season will be interesting.

Last year, it seemed like the Pens didn’t even want to be there. I only remember Sid scoring on Price tbh
Yep..I agree. You could tell they were ready to play golf from the first minute of play. This year they at least have it a fighting chance.

Sullivan needs to accept having some tough guys on the team. For some reason Cole and Reaves were in his doghouse. It’s not like these guys are fighting every shift. I feel Reaves can play but based on reputation, he gets labeled as just a goon.

I think when he won back to back cups gave him a bit of stubbornness. I like him too, but he doesn’t have to be just “fast”

and they didn't trust the rookie.

Lame that he didn't get any ice time, especially tonight. What could it have hurt? Jarry was in coma, so we for sure weren't winning with him. Maybe another netminder would have made the difference.

Pageau has always given the Pens fits. Even in Ottawa. He’s like Panarin, Oshie, Drouin

Good God man, the Pirates thread? You really are a glutton for punishment. I feel good for the Steelers Only fans. They only feel like **** once a year (except for the 4 times in my memory). I gave up on the Bucs awhile back, was lured back in during the Cutch years, heart broken again against the Reds in that wild card game, and that was too much... Getting way too old for this but again it's been more fun than not...

I wonder if D’Orio will get a look next season

Never have been a baseball fan. Maybe that's a good thing.

Don’t remind us JMM.
Bob nutting crushed our dreams. I’ll wear pirates hats for the team/history. Nutting needs to **** off

I’ll be honest. I’m a Pens first fan.
After those back to back cups. The losses since haven’t been stinging as much.

However I’d like to see guys like Reaves, Blueger, Gaudreau get their name on the cup

The Pens should’ve stuck with that Angello, Zahorna tandem

I think it's fair to say the window is closed. While I am disappointed the Pens didn't advance, I have to admit, I'm kinda relieved. This team wasn't winning the cup. It was easy to get excited after winning the division when nobody gave the Pens much of a chance of even making the playoffs, but this team just isn't very good I guess. The Islanders brought a physical style to the series that the Pens couldn't match. It got hard to watch Pens players shying away from contact which led to gaffes that ended up in the back of Pens net. I was rooting hard, and at 3-2, I thought they had a chance. Then a horrific three minutes of hockey took place and suddenly it was 5-3. The Islanders are capable of shutting a team down with that lead, and they did, and the Pens are headed to the offseason early again. A few thoughts/observations.......

1). Jarry is not a starter. I know it's kind of CPT Obvious, but the guy was brilliant at times during the season and even this series, but as the series wore on, his warts came closer and closer to the surface until they were exposed. He is a solid backup, but not much more.

2). This team needs an overhaul. Philisophically, managerially, coaching and playing. It appears the Pens took care of the managerial part, and the one move they made to acquire Jeff Carter was brilliant. Carter turned out to be more than anyone could have hoped. Hope he's back next season. Hated him as a Flyer, liked him as a King, love him as a Pen. He's got juice left and can contribute in the proper role. The philosophy, coaching and playing all kind of go hand in hand. Sullivan has to go. I love the guy for what he brought and but this team into for the B2B cups, but his philosophy has not evolved, he is incredibly stubborn based on past success, the NHL has moved on to a different breed of team and he refused to adjust, and what you saw tonight is the result. The Pens need to get younger, faster, more skilled, bigger and physical. The teams that are winning have all of those traits.

3). Kris Letang walks a fine line between brilliant and bone headed. Worst part is, you never know which Letang you will get night to night. Hell, even shift to shift. I'd move him if the price is right.

4). Geno looks disinterested, bored and unhappy. He also borders on brilliant and boneheaded. Lately, it's been more boneheaded than brilliant, and you just have to wonder if he isn't looking for a change of scenery. Guys like him just don't forget how to play, so there has to be something going on there. Maybe he needs a change of scenery. I'd move him if the price was right.

5). Tanev is a keeper. Guy is undersized, but he brings it every shift, every night. You don't win cups without guys like Tanev.

6). Kapanen is nothing special. He's good I guess, but this team wouldn't hiccup without him.

7). The "pass first" mentality of this team has crippled them. The Pens had plenty of sustained zone time aside from game 1, and they spent far too much time passing the puck around looking for the perfect shot. It cost them.

8). Too many times, the Pens were coasting. You look at the Islanders, those cats were moving their legs every shift of every game. The Pens, just kind of coasting to pucks, like they had a ton of time to make a play rather than skating and moving the puck. It resulted in too much physical damage, lots of turnovers, and scoring chances against. There was little urgency. Sure, it showed up in spurts, but it wasn't sustained. An athlete that had a good career in Pittsburgh once said, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." In regards to this series, no truer words were spoken.

9). Aston-Reese, Zucker, Gaudreau should be moved or not resigned, whatever their contract status is. Zucker is too soft. He plays a purely skill game that he doesn't have the skill for. Gaudreau was a nice find for a bit, but like Rust and Guentzel, he is too easily neutralized, and he doesn't have their skill. Aston Reese likely wouldn't be on an NHL roster if not for Sullivan.

10). All in all a pretty good season all things considered, but the playoff failures continue. The Pens have a lot of soul searching to do in the offseason. On one hand, I would not be surprised to see the Pens look completely different come next season, but at the same time I would not be surprised with the status quo. Here's hoping they change philosophy, even if Sullivan is the coach, and get bigger, faster, younger and a bit more physical.

My thoughts exactly. Although I wouldn’t mind Gaudreau back at a cheap price.

I agree with Sarge.

The fact is that this team is missing too many parts to lift the cup. I just don't see them doing it with the soft, pass-first game, and Jarry as #1.

Truth is that he might be coachable into being a number one, though.

Changing a culture almost always means a change of leadership. The GM was changed. Time for the head coach to go.

Great post Sarge.
