This has been my WHOLE point. I DON'T KNOW. NOBODY DOES. I am not saying he will ever be more than a backup. I am saying he came in ready to compete for the #1 QB and by all accounts did an admirable job this offseason. I can't be mad at a guy for what he did at the end of 2019. Water under the bridge in a completely unrelated scenario. In this scenario he was asked to work hard and prove yourself this offseason with Ben retiring. He answered the call. And on top of that even with Tomlin and Co. stating he had a chance to win the starting job and him at least doing enough to be in that conversation, they have disrespected him every shot they have had. And how does he respond? By saying the right things to the media, practicing hard, and putting up a good performance in the next preseason game. How can you as a fan be upset about that?
First, I had Pickett as a high second round pick. So it is not like I hated the pick just thought we could have traded back and still probably got him. Second, I stated a fact in his first preseason games he checked down and dumped off on all his throws. I also stated he made big strides from the Seahawks to the Jaguars pushing the ball downfield more and in fact stated the stats wouldn't show as much since he had two big pass plays called back because of offensive line penalties. Check downs are fine but in the NFL if you don't push the envelope and take some chances and trust your single coverage or smaller windows you won't make it. Rudolph didn't push at all his first year and defenses started feeding on him. It is a learning process. I also stated Pickett is definitely ascending as a passer. And I am not sure what you are talking about with Brady. His CAY/Cmp has been 5.7, 7.1, 6.0 & 6.0 the last 4 years. Mahomes has been 4.9, 6.3, 6.5 & 6.5. Rodgers has been 5.3, 5.5, 5.6, & 6.2. I mean he is right up there with his Carried Air Yards per completion. Down play what success? Preseason and camp? Well, then again why can't I point out the fact that Rudolph has outperformed everyone so far? You can't have it both ways. You can't point to Pickett having a couple good preseason drives and anointing him the heir apparent and then spaz out if I point out Rudolph having a good offseason.
