Pirates 2017 thread

How did he get 80 games? Was he suspended before

Baseball don't mess around no more:
A first-time performance-enhancing substance violation of the Joint Drug Program will now result in an unpaid 80-game suspension, increased from 50 games. A player's second violation will result in an unpaid 162-game suspension (and a loss of 183 days of pay), increased from 100 games. A third violation will result in a permanent suspension from Baseball.

Yeah, baseball has taken a zero tolerance policy towards steroids, given how much they tainted their record books and what not.

What I don't understand is how Marte could not hit even 10 HRs last year while juicing

Wow 80 games for the first violation? Yea they aren't messing around.

Always been something about his attitude on the field that rubbed me the wrong way.

80 games! O.O

MLB doesn't mess around at all huh?

And nothing helps to get the Cardinals' ship righted like a visit from the Pirates. Cards had lost 3 in a row and 6 of 7, then the Bucs roll into town and suddenly St. Louis is on a 2 game winning streak. Still early, but with the loss of Marte .......

Geeze. Even the NASCAR thread is getting more action than this one. Another impressive beating the Succo's took yesterday. I think it's going to be a tight race between them and the Braves for the worst record in the NL.

By the 3rd inning, I thought for sure we were going to see a position player pitching before the night was over.

Zero buzz for the team this year. They struggled some last year and did absolutely nothing in the offseason to show they wanted to improve. My interest level is already small at this time of year with the NFL Draft and Penguins, but then add on Kang, Marte and the rough start, my interest level is basically zero at this point.

Cole gives up 1 run to the defending world champs, but the Bucs can't score at all to help him out.

Jeter and Jeb are buying the Marlins ... won't somebody please buy the Bucs??

Hard to get excited for me...They were on the verge of being a very good team then mangement seemed to stop worrying about improving the team. They do not have the bats to compete especially with Marte gone. They have scored the least amount of runs in the NL and 3rd least in baseball. I think the pitching can come around, but I just dont think they are talented enough offensively to compete.

One positive is that they have been extremely competitive with the Cubs, having won four of six against them, with one of the two losses being a tight 1-0 game.

Starting pitching is the most important component of winning baseball, and the way Cole, Taillon and Nova have been pitching gives them a chance. With that being said, they need Glasnow to become more efficient with his great arm talent.

Offensively, they really need to get Freese back, and Polanco needs to start doing something.

I'm unsure whether Polanco is still hurt of not, but it's obvious that Hurdle cannot continue hitting him in the four spot every day until he starts hitting. We're getting to the point where it's looking less likely that he'll become the player he was projected to be, though there's still time.

There's reasons for hope, as Bell is progressing nicely, and McCutchen and Cervelli seem to be coming around. Cervelli is actually hitting a lot harder than his numbers suggest. Also, Harrison has quietly gotten off to a great start.

Losing Marte definitely hurts, though.

Nice 12-2 win in Miami. Ngoepe is hitting .800! Nice start for him.

How good of a pitching coach is Ray Searage?

I mean, it's getting ridiculous at this point (in a very good way).

Nova is his latest successful reclamation project, following the likes of Burnett, Liriano, Volquez and Happ.

WEEKEND WARRIORS

The Pirates are 14-4 in games played between Friday and Sunday this season, 2-18 between Monday and Thursday.

For all the adversity this team has faced with injuries and the unusual losses of Kang, Marte and Taillon, they are hanging in there.
Taillon is throwing again and Glasnow is coming around. This still could be an interesting year.

You know things are bad when no one cares to even discuss the team...

Well, Tony Watson blew his fifth save--his second straight last night--and the Pirates happen to be 5.5 games out of first place.
