Pope Francis will give all priests discretion to formally forgive women who have had abortions and seek absolution during the Roman Catholic Church's upcoming Holy Year, in the Argentine pontiff's latest move towards a more open and inclusive church.

In a letter published by the Vatican today, Francis described the "existential and moral ordeal" faced by women who have terminated pregnancies and said he had "met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision".

Pope Francis is very liberal. He might need to be as there has been a decline in people going to church....which could also mean less money given.

While I think a Pope who interacts with the people is a good thing, I'm wondering if the Cardinals who elected him Pope knew he was going to be this way.

He's not pro-abortion. He's pro-forgiveness of sins. The catch is you actually have to be sorry you did it. Genuinely.

and make a nice donation.

That's bullshit. I've been Catholic all my life, have gotten an annulment, I paid a small processing fee, that's it, and even that is waived in cases of financial need. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession, absolution) is entirely free and even anonymous if you choose.

It was partially a joke, and I have a lot of family that is Catholic and there is a lot of political bullshit going on behind the scenes in Catholic Churches and Schools that has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with money. This is not just a problem with Catholicism and has its parallels in the Protestant churches as well. Please don't take personal offense to this I am not disparaging your faith just the political bullshit that happens with all organized religion. Anytime you create an organization as large as large as a church your are going to have people who see it as their gravy train and path to power rather than as it should be a place to worship and help others. This does not mean the Religion is wrong or bad but that people are corrupt and can take advantage of the church's followers.

I'm not taking it personally but when I see myths like this perpetuated I will refute them. I'm not gung ho on everything the Catholic church does and has done, but some people have ideas about it that seem to be left over from the middle ages, and don't understand what it's really like in a normal parish and diocese. Most parish priests would laugh at the idea that they are using their power and influence for financial gain...for the most part your average parish is struggling to pay the bills. Priests aren't getting bribes to annul people or forgive sins. Members of our parish help a lot of people in need, including unwed mothers and their children and women who are devastated from the effects of having had an abortion (read up on the Project Rachel sometime). Nobody gets any financial benefit from it, trust me.

Maybe not at the Parrish level. The corruption is higher up. In many Evangelical large churches the corruption is at the lower level. The biggest problem for me is the whole idea of annulment to begin with but that is a more philisophical type debate. Personally my family has had issues with being granted annulments and other issues so I am a bit jaded on that whole process and hate that it involves any money. Many Catholic HIgh Schools have corruption issues as well and again I am talking from personal family experience. The whole Christian church Catholic and Protestant has issues at the middle and upper levels where they are not responsive to the needs of there churches. There are many good people but there are many who are not. Just like life. I am personally Presbyterian and they have issues and have divided in to too many different groups over social issues starting with ordination of women and has gotten worse over the Gay issue. We have interesting conversations about both sides with my Catholic family.

Hispanics want Pope Francis to address Trump on immigration

Karla Perez loves Pope Francis. Like her, he’s a native Spanish speaker. He is also the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church, and he talks easily about soccer and prefers public buses to luxury cars.

Most of all, though, Perez loves this pope because he has made better treatment of immigrants a centerpiece of his two-year-old papacy.

She hopes, as do many of the nearly 30 million Hispanic Catholics in the country, that this month’s visit by Francis will change the tone of the nation’s divisive immigration debate.

“I’m an immigrant myself, and I hear politicians saying they want to build higher walls. I can’t remember a time when it’s been this ugly,” said Perez, 31, an elementary school teacher who emigrated from El Salvador when she was a child and now attends Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria, Va.

Perez said that at a time when politicians are talking about mass deportations, “anchor babies” and revoking birthright citizenship, she is eager to hear the pope’s “gentle, kind voice that makes you feel like you are going to be okay.”

On Sept. 23, the morning after the pope lands in Washington on a flight from Cuba, thousands of Latinos — 50,000 or more, by some estimates — will walk, take the bus or ride the Metro to the White House following special sunrise Masses held across the region in Spanish. The pope is expected to greet the crowds outside after meeting with President Obama.

Francis will hold high-profile meetings with Latinos and immigrants in each of the three U.S. cities he is visiting — Washington, New York and Philadelphia — and Catholic leaders hope he urges elected officials to fix the system that has left 11 million undocumented people living in the United States in the shadows.

Let's end this now.

Immigrants are people who apply in their home country to be Americans, wait their turn, pay their fees, learn the language and comply with the laws.

Illegal aliens are to immigrants

as

Burglars are to house guests

If you read the biographical information about Francis growing up and his early priesthood, you'll understand why he is the way he is. I don't agree with it but it explains alot. Also explains his closeness with Obama.

Religion is just a business, you got to do what is best for the bottom line.
God would be proud of the Pope if he existed.

I'd be more impressed with the Pope if he'd address the fact that Mexico and Cuba are shitholes and why people want to leave.

That and apologizing for Pedo-Priests of the past, and turning in Pedo=Priests that are still out there instead of issuing them Vatican passports and shipping them to other countries.

...so in other words he's putting in a forgiveness express lane

yeah - just what the world needs - a socialist Pope

Obama to seek unity with Pope Francis on climate

Obama has made no secret of his affection for the outspoken pope, calling him a "transformative leader" whose influence has transcended the Roman Catholic community. The pope has embraced many of the issues Obama has sought to advance, including global warming, poverty and diplomacy with Iran and Cuba

Pope to say D.C. Mass in Spanish in bow to 'Hispanic population'

In a bow to the huge U.S. Hispanic population and the Catholic Church's advocacy of immigration, Pope Francis plans to give his Washington Mass Sept. 23 in Spanish, according to Cardinal Donald William Wuerl.

"The Mass is going to be in Spanish," Wuerl said Wednesday while previewing the pope's trip to reporters.

"It's a recognition of how large the Hispanic population in the United States is," said Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington. "And he's coming as the first pope from the New World and the predominant language in this hemisphere is Spanish," added Wuerl of the Argentine-born pope.

Back from lurking, just on this topic. This is the only good thing this Marxist douche has done. My guess is that this sin has caused more people to stop taking the Sacraments and stop going to Church than any other. The process before involved absolution from a Bishop, although I am just now finding out that most Bishops have already empowered their priests to absolve this sin. Nothing stains the soul more than this sin, and one lives with it forever. I can tell you from experience that formal forgiveness from the Church changes your life, and that has always seemed a formidable task that frankly, one might not feel worthy of pursuing. Now they can confess their sins to their priest and receive Communion again. I'm sure this seems odd to non-Catholics. If so, blow me.

When I was in Italy my group went to a Baptist church one Sunday, it wasn't real big but it was packed.

As a socialist, he won't rest until we have become a shithole from which people flee as well. To where would be the logical next question.

Also, and I haven't researched it but I'm not sure I've heard the Pope talking much about the persecution of Christians in the ME.......may be just selective reporting ?
