Report: Pouncey to Sign a 5-year Extension

IMO Pouncey's always been a bit overrated. He gets pushed around a lot. If he's healthy and he improves, it's a good move. But those are some big ifs.

Agreed. After the Mack signing I was all about trading his *** to Miami for a 2nd rounder. I hope he plays up to this contract because if he doesn't it will end up being Woodley all over again!

Pouncey is easily one of the 3 best Centers in the game... His first 2 years, he was arguably the best. And, again, he is only 24!

A 24 y/o who has already been a 1st team ALL-PRO and a 2nd team twice! But guys on this board saying that he is overrated? Spoiled fan base we have become...

You mean spend half of the season in a sweat suit on the sidelines and when he's in the game, allow defenders do to whatever they want to with him? Doubt it.

Velasco did a great job, but he doesn't have Pouncey's athleticism. This cat can move, and pull, which is why Dirt was so special. He makes us better and allows us to do more things that Munchak can take advantage of. Looking forward to these guys playing healthy this year! Fingers crossed...

How will this impact Bens upcoming contract negotiations?.......and which one of you toolboxes ran off TMC?

Shouldnt be any huge rush to get Ben done, he is signed through this year and the next. Both sides have also made it known that Ben will retire a Steeler.

On the other- i would be much more interested locking up Cortez up for a thrifty contract while we still can...

Ya know, I like Pouncey for the most part. And I think he projects very well to a zone system, so if that's going to be our base scheme as it should, then I think he's good a good shot to return to All-Pro form. But damn, that's expensive. That's a hair more than Mack got, and Mack's was a RFA offer sheet from a team with $30M in cap room!

He's a good center, but he's declined since his rookie year and we STILL give him the highest C contract in the league? I miss the days we made everyone prove they deserved the big contract. We keep paying guys market value - even when it's beyond their worth - the instant demand hits. Even if he played out the season healthy and solid, he'd cost the same next year, maybe pennies more. Why is it so important to hand him the top contract this instant, in the midst of a decline, before we can even gauge his development?

as well pouncey has the athleticism to play lg and with a reliable back up in Wallace at times we can line pouncey at lg if a whole drive is going to operate out of a 4 or 5 wide set and be no huddle the whole drive or until we are inside the red zone.
Foster is heavy and a plodder who gets pushed back into the pocket or cannot keep the under dt at the line so at times when the Dt stunts or twists Foster easily gets beat, now having 3 centers as Wesley Johnson also played c gives Haley @ munchak options for when Haley wants a drive to primarily operate out of the gun, with a younger @ group of WR it may take them a bit longer to get open or know where to go with 3 new comers, Moore, Heyward-Bey @ Bryant. If even with the gun they take time and with it expected that brown will draw a lot of double teams early on until someone else can beat single coverage constantly the pocket will see more pressure and be asked to hold out for longer, this won't likely affect Pouncey, Decastro and maybe Beachum but Foster and Gilbert are poor pass blockers and with Haley wanting Ben to throw less on the run, he can ask at times for Pouncey to play LG at times which increases his overall worth(dual position).
Wesley Johnson I see as the LG in a year or 2. If Adams can unseat Beachum, I think they will keep Gilbert as the starting RT so if Adams wins the lt job Beachum next year could settle in at LG.
IF Beachum comes in thicker and picks up from where he left off then Munchak should consider Adams at Rt for next year.

I get what you are saying for the most- except the bolded.

I think the Steelers believe, as do I, that they have a young Center who has already proved to be one of the best in the league. And that, barring any more torpedo shot's to the knee, will continue to improve. Just think, when his contract is over, he will be the same age as Ryan Kalil and Nick Mangold today!

Its just hard to imagine that Pouncey declines. Much more likely that he only gets better...

In a perfect world you line up at least 20 players who are #5-10 at their position and 2 who are top 5. This ain't a perfect world, you do not turn away a top 5 player to save money and play a #25 player.

Isn't the cap scheduled to go up again significantly next year? Might be the reason . . .

One of the best centers in the league and still only 24. He may potentially be actually entering his prime, compared to say, Alex Mack.

Its alot of $$, no doubt. But it is difficult to imagine Pouncey not getting top end $$ with his credentials.

Hey- since some of you keep stating that we are 'wasting's Big Bens prime years', wouldnt you rather we throw our money into the O-Line?

Ya can't please everybody...

When you pay star money, you better get star performance. Pouncey leveled off a bit but the OL was in turmoil with injuries and bad coaching. He still has the talent to be the best in the game. The zone blocking scheme is perfect for him and Munchak is the right coach.

With the athleticism of Pouncey and DeCastro, they can have some special blocking schemes most teams can't execute.

I know velasco is healthy enough to be golfing and coaching a youth football camp.

I like pouncy ok. I don't think he is "dominating",, but good.

I don't think the steelers pull the center enough to even worry about his pulling skills.

Look ,, im a fan of Pouncy's .. or was... whatever.. I just don't see our cap strapped team dishing out a huge contract like this.. to someone that can be replaced.

And YES velasco did very well in his place last year until his injury.

Velasco did well in a scheme that was basic. The steelers pretty much scrapped their outside zone game last year. The steelers can get by with Velasco at C but with Pouncey, they can excel. They can do a lot more.

Pouncey was good his rookie year but got worse the next two even though we was voted to the pro bowl. Last year he was injured. It's a lot of money. I hope they get Ben's deal done this offseason and don't wait until next year.

Let me ask you a question...

If you believe Pouncey was good "his rookie year" - and then he got hurt on the run to the SB (high ankle sprain). Then he was decimated within the first 5 minutes of the first game of the season, last year - How can he be worse or a declining player when he hasn't been on the field???

There were two seasons between the Super Bowl and last year's injury..
