Report: Pouncey to Sign a 5-year Extension

Pouncey was good his rookie year but got worse the next two even though we was voted to the pro bowl. Last year he was injured. It's a lot of money. I hope they get Ben's deal done this offseason and don't wait until next year.

Pouncey wasnt just 'good' his rookie season, he was spectacular. He was also spectacular his second year- then struggled his third (as did everyone else on the team). Forget the pro bowl- the guy is a 3x All-Pro, voted by people who know a lot more about football than you or I.

minor details...

I Dont like this deal at all. Just not a fan of Pouncey anymore. Between the injuries, off field stuff with his bro, and medicore play last time he actually played I think it is a big gamble. Hopefully he matures and plays better, but only time will tell.

What off the field stuff?

Wearing a hat/shirt in support of his former teammate is 'off the field issues'?

lol Ok bro

Nevermind that all of his teammates absolutely love him and consider him to be the leader of the offensive line.

I wouldn't want his brother even as a minimum salary free agent. They seem like the kind of guys who aren't bad but if they are with the wrong crowd, they do dumb things. I think both of them together would be bad.

Mike seems to struggled more in the bad judgement department as well.

I am saying it soured my opinion of him and shows immaturity. I am sure the pounceys knew more about hernandez the most and should not be wearing hats to free a murderer. His bro was involved in the dolphins scandal and also posted anti michael sam tweets. I know you cant condemn our pouncey because of his bro, but the hats make me wonder if he has just been lucky not to get caught with other stupid things

Pouncey is the clear leader on the Oline, the alpha male everyone else rallies around. Heck, he may be the lead dog for the entire offense. Ben obviously loves him. You got Munchak in place to rebuild the blocking schemes around Pouncey. No surprise here they locked him up, he's the prímary building block on that line. At the young age of 24 too. I'm stoked.

Couple of points. First off he is not a 3x All-pro. He was a 1st team All-Pro once and a 2nd team once. He was a pro-bowler 3 times. Also he'll be 25 in July.

I see both sides of the debate.

Really on the fence with this one.

he s talented...

For me I think I would have rather seen Allen and Heywood extended first..........

I dont think we should base pro bowls on how good or bad a player is. Pouncey had an excellent rookie year and generated a lot of hype and popularity and deserved to goto the pro bowl then. Its very debateable that he has played at a pro bowl level since. If all the other players on the team like him and respect him, then great. I just hope that he can play at a level the same or better than his rookie year. I worry that the injuries have already taken a toll on him, and I also worry that he may have an ugly alter ego that has not showed up yet. I just think that it is a gamble to make him the highest paid center in the league especially after coming off a devastating injury. Hopefully I am wrong

I really wasn't questioning if he deserved them or not. Just pointing out that he didn't make 3 All-Pro teams. IMHO Tombert is in their own little world and very little they have done over the past few years has turn out right. Signing Woodley (even though I would have wanted him back as well), not signing Allen, signing Worilds to a $10M tag, drafting poorly etc... I just don't understand their logic at all.

Mack's deal set the value of pouncey, we should not have used the franchise tag on worlids rather the transition tag and if a team offered a reasonable deal we could then cut woodley and match a offer.

I like Pouncey, I don't like the deal.
I was hoping for a cheaper price as he is coming from a serious injury, maybe 7,5M per year?

Actually-

He was a 2nd Team All Pro during 2010
A 1st team All Pro during 2011
And a 2nd Team All Pro during 2012

In addition to that, he is a 3x Pro Bowler (less important, I know)

This ranks right up there with drafting Jarvis, and will be a ******* boat anchor around our necks like the Woodley contract. At least the Woodley contract looked good when signed, this one smells like **** from the start.

Pouncey is easily one of the 3 best Centers in the game... His first 2 years, he was arguably the best. And, again, he is only 24!

A 24 y/o who has already been a 1st team ALL-PRO and a 2nd team twice! But guys on this board saying that he is overrated? Spoiled fan base we have become...

Oh god no! I said he's been a bit overrated and that means I'm spoiled! Gimme a break, just calling it like I see it. If he comes back in and solidifies the position like he was supposed to, helps the team get back to the post season and actually plays in those post season games, then it'll all be worth it. As it stands, he's been a good center who's slid a bit his last full season. I don't care how many imaginary teams he gets voted to. He gets paid to play and perform in real games and help bring home hardware. Anything else is just window dressing.

the good thing is that it is a long contract and after the 3rd season the cost of dumping him is pretty small I think

While Pouncey's deal makes him the NFL's highest-paid center, in a couple of seasons, he'll probably be the seventh or eighth highest-paid player at his position.

And his 2014 cap hit of $3.6 million isn't anywhere near the top of the charts for centers, and is far less than the $5.26 million he was scheduled to count against the cap this season. Editor's Note: The savings doesn't take into account $1.4 million of remaining bonus money from his rookie deal. So the savings in 2014 is actually about $250,000.

So, in reality, the Steelers just saved themselves some cap space this season while also locking up a player who was the first center in NFL history to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons.
