Round one - Pickett

Hopefully, they sit Pickett for a year but we shall see. If he outperforms in the preseason, then they may put him in right off the bat.
Sit him for a year? This offense is not in rebuild mode all the parts are here, assuming they resign johnson, they got claypool, muth, Harris, young line, the gangs all here! trubisky wins the job he’s here for awhile… kenny has got to go out and win the job and win it now or he’s a bust. This isn’t kenny hate it’s reality. They didn’t use money on the defense they used on a qb, then, drafted a qb. since no one gets fired in Pittsburgh I guess everyone in the front office felt comfortable drafting for 9-8. The upside between all 3 qbs just isn’t that great. Kenny‘s time is now, his upside, in fact, he’s ready now... if all falls into place Kenny’s a Justin Herbert he can step in and deliver now… if not… he’s a bust, Harsh, but it’s reality. “Reality” that thing all other coaches have to worry about except the Steeler coaches.

Worst case is Mitch plays lights out and then what do you do? Mitch has had several games where he looks like league MVP then other games where he looks awful. There is just no consistency.

He is a 5th year senior who is going on 24.

His biggest plus is that he is polished and 'Pro-ready', so if he doesn't beat out Mitch year one (or at least out-shine him in camp), than he is already a failed pick.

Need to draft some OL and especially a center though.

My biggest take away is they didn't move up to get him. In their position, I think they did what they needed to and it ain't like a potential franchise QB falls into your lap after a winning season the year before. Plus, I wanted Davis or Hamilton, and (obviously) both were gone.

So what if Pickett's 24. It's not like he's 34. Out of the 30+ QBs selected in the first round since 2012 only a handful would be considered franchise QBs. Most of them came into the league around 22 years old. Possibly they weren't mature enough to be thrown into the position they found themselves. I think Pickett is.

It's literally like finding needles in a haystack finding a franchise QB. Steelers did their diligence and ended up having their choice. I didn't want a QB going in, but I'll trust their judgement.

I didnt want a QB either, but I really didnt want us to trade up for one. The draft kinda fell apart for us so cant be too mad at getting pickett. Most of the upper tier guys at need positions were gone. I am shocked we didnt take Willis, but Kenny was very happy and I think will be a fan favorite

I was really looking forward to yelling “Whatchu talkin bout, Willis?” every time Malik threw an interception and “THAT… is what Willis is talkin bout!” Every time he threw a TD. I guess I’ll have to settle for “Hey, they killed Kenny!” every time Picket gets sacked.

Just heard a report that the steelers tried to trade up with the Texans to draft Pickett. I guess we got lucky they said no.

And how in the hell did you ascertain that Pickett would be there at 20 before they signed Trubisky?
I will try to explain what I meant/mean; why both? If you signed Mitch to be your QB for now, why then draft a QB who you proclaim to be ready...now? I never meant to imply that they would know this person would be available, only that since they already got their guy in Mitch, why draft another...Mitch? If Mitch is 'the guy', then he's the guy and you maybe pick a developmental player later in the draft. Instead, they used our first round pick on a new third round QB. I am astonished by that.

I have claimed no special powers or knowledge, only confusion (and embarrassment). Just asking questions about what our 'brain trust' is putting out there. It seems, to me, to be completely illogical, at best.

Fair reply, but how do you know Pickett will be another Mitch? You said 3rd rd QB. I don’t recall any prognosticator or media whip saying Pickett was any less than early 2nd. Gheez, I’m all for opinions, but like Buckeye said give the player a chance to show his stuff.

Lamar is 25- already an MVP
Burrow is 25- already led his team to the big game.

I am pulling for the guy cause he is a Steeler, but its really difficult to see the upside of this 24 y.o. super-duper senior, with baby hands lol.
At least Chad was only 22 when he was drafted lol
You keep whining about Pickett being 24. So what? If he turns into a franchise player like the Steelers are hoping, he'll still provide 10+ years of service at the quarterback position.

And yeah, you take Lamar and his MVP trophy. That's about all he's ever going to win. I'll take my chances with Pickett over that guy right now, a year younger, and never having played a down in the NFL.

I wasn't rooting for a QB selection. It would have been a miracle if Davis fell to them. Once it got to the 10th pick, I was hoping they would trade up for Davis. As it turns out, that's what happened, because he would not have gotten past Baltimore.

Having good players at a position is never a bad thing. If Mitch starts and lights it up, Pickett is first round trade bait next year for an extra day one pick.

Honestly, I never saw a Steelers defensive team get trucked in the run game like they did last year. If they don't fix that, it won't matter whose playing QB.
I was interested in Davis too, but some of those "highlights" where they showed him taking plays off in the championship game were eye-opening.

The whole point here is to win superbowls! That’s the standard! You don’t win superbowls drafting an average qb to challenge 2 other average qbs to see who can be the most average! it’s not hate on kenny had they spent the trubisky money on the defense and then we took kenny great! But they didn’t we got retreads for the defense! not guys that will challenge for the pro bowl but players thrown in the ditch and we are trying to squeeze a few more miles out of. We do not have a championship defense! Period! This isn’t hate on kenny it’s “here we go again!”
So who would you have drafted instead of Pickett yesterday? Who was available that was going to magically transform the Steelers into Super Bowl champions?

Does he?

Fumbles per game (career) for comparisons (on the 2022 semi-mobile/pocket QB prospects):

*Using Fox Sports stats

0.68 fumbles, 0.43 lost fumbles per game = Desmond Ridder (4 seasons as starter)

0.54 fumbles, 0.21 lost fumbles per game = Kenny Pickett (4 seasons as starter)

0.52 fumbles, 0.26 lost fumbles per game = Matt Corral (last 3 seasons)

0.51 fumbles, 0.19 lost fumbles per game = Sam Howell (3 seasons as starter)
Good post.

Also, Pickett only had 4 fumbles in 2021, and that included nearly 100 rushing attempts. 2 total in his final 10 college games -- I guess his small hands forgot that they were supposed to fumble a whole lot more to support that false narrative.

Ben fumbled 11 times last season, but nobody likes to talk about that.

I just hope his feet are larger than his hands...
because Kenny has some very big shoes to fill.
