Round one - Pickett

Consider it claimed here.
My last complaint and comment on the topic, for all the enamored supporters already...

Pickett is already 24. He played in an extremely weak conference, over the past few years in the ACC. He couldn't figure Clemson until they lost their star QBs.

Combine that with small hands and never playing, at an NFL level, in the cold winters of the AFCN... I'm praying this collective decision pans out. Yeah, go Kenny; but I would've traded back if at all possible.

Ok

My positive vibe is gone at the moment. Soooo freaking angry right now...

After listening to their press conference some things I gathered. It wasn't close at QB Pickett was their clear choice. They didn't expect him to be available. So the value on the board was greater or equal to the remaining picks. I am going with equal. But all things equal they wanted an option to go with Mitch. I think they see Rudolph as a backup. So they didn't want to be stuck with a possible starter and a backup at the most critical position on the roster.

If you glue into their thinking you should understand the pick even if you don't care for it.

Excelent post slash, thank you

Pickett will be fine and possibly on the bench for this season which would mean they did their job well in signing Mitch.

Should Pickett eventually or start out of the gate, then they also were successfull in their pick of him.

He is a STEELERS player now and I hope for success galore.

Mitch Trubisky was a 4 year starter in this league and showed little to no improvement as a NFL QB. Everyone is saying Matt Nagy ruined him.....I disagree. Alot of people think Trubisky sitting behind Josh Allen for 1 year has made this guy into a potential superstar. Everyone points to his pre-season game vs Chicago Bears where he threw 20 for 28 for 221 and 1 TD going in a REVENGE game for Trubisky which the Bills won 41-15. I watched that game....if you haven't seen it go watch the plays on YouTube. Sorry I still saw the same Mitch Trubisky that I watched in Chicago.....errant throws, bad overthrows to wide open receivers....he's still the same QB the Bears drafted with little to no improvement. That is the reason they drafted Kenny Pickett.

All the nay-sayers who dwell on the fact that he has small hands or will be 24 years old when the season starts....CALM DOWN! If he can be the QB the Steelers think he can be you will have him for 15+ years. Joe Burrow was 24 when he started in the NFL too. Pickett has so many intangibles they had to draft him at #20th overall. His anticipation, accuracy throwing the football, his calm, cool demeanor and his ability to read defenses pre-snap and progress through his reads as he drops back are at a skill level that you'd expect to see from a 3rd or 4th year NFL QB. Watch his 2021 Highlights and you will see his ability. We got a Pocket Passer with very good mobility who can make plays with his feet when a play breaks down. This is everything you look for in a QB.....most times you are lucky if you get a QB with half of Pickett's intangibles. His arm strength is good enough to make all the throws so there is no worry there either. I say he's a Day 1 starter....not much doubt in my mind he will be far superior to Mitch Trubisky & Mason Rudolph....IMO he's better right now. Give this kid a chance to show his ability on the field before you crucify the kid. I sure as hell didn't want Malik Willis....a NIGHTMARE PROJECT for any team who drafts him.

I can’t believe how Darnold is in his 5th season and is only one year older than Pickett. I hope I’m wrong on this whole situation, but I actually like Mitch a bit and I don’t see why we spent a first rounder on Uncle Rico here. Pickett is literally a grown *** man at this point.

Lamar is 25- already an MVP
Burrow is 25- already led his team to the big game.

I am pulling for the guy cause he is a Steeler, but its really difficult to see the upside of this 24 y.o. super-duper senior, with baby hands lol.

I get being optimistic, but this sounds like you are a Pitt Alum lol.

The difference between him and Burrow is the fact that Burrow dominated (and won) in the SEC. And also about a .75 inches in hand size lol.

And those intangibles you mentioned are dubious at best. He wasn't even the most accurate QB available. And the fact that you have to say his arm is 'good enough' should have you concerned.

This feels like it was a Rooney call. Get the local fanbase excited, while trying to make amends for the Marino blunder.

I would have preferred a swing for the fence pick (Willis) or trade back and get a wild card (Corrall).

I’m indifferent about the pick. Personally wouldn’t have gone QB with every QB still on the board. But I said it before Howell, Pickett and Strong were the best of an overall mediocre bunch. Everyone has red flags so it’s a bit of a crapshoot. At the end of the day the Steelers obviously didn’t feel comfortable with the QBs on the roster so they put another young arm in the mix. We’ll see in 3 years if it was a good decision.

Good luck Kenny I’ll be cheering for you.

You knew the way the draft went with Davis gone and the huge run on WR's, that the pick was definitely going to be QB. It was just a matter of which one.

This ^^^

When Penning was gone at 19, I feared the Steelers would go QB. I TRULY feared they would take Kordell II, but fortunately that did not happen.

Jordan Davis, Jameson Williams, Chris Olave, Ahmad Gardner, Drake London, Treylon Burks, even Jahan Dotson, and Trevor Penning were all gone. Sorry, no massive DT to stuff the run, no elite WR, no superb OT left.

Combine that with small hands and never playing, at an NFL level, in the cold winters of the AFCN...

Berm, I am not a fan of the pick for a number of reasons, several of which you cited, but come on about playing in cold weather.

He is literally the only college QB to play multiple games at Heinz Field.

Exactly right. I'm astounded that some thought this guy would have been worthy of riding for a season, let alone been a candidate for our next franchise QB. He's an average, at best, QB that is back-up worthy and nothing more. The fact that some are still crying 12 hours later because they thought we would have been better served with a DT or WR only confirms their lack of knowledge about the player and the game.

Willis didn’t go in the first round. No one took him.

If a guy is backstage for the draft and is not taken in the 1st round, is he required to remain in that waiting room? Can he at least order room service?

We won nothing the last 11 years with Ben and Tomlin and now we get a QB that is not in Ben's league talent wise or physically and we are still stuck with Tomlin and his idiot sidekick Canada. What could go wrong ?

I wasn't rooting for a QB selection. It would have been a miracle if Davis fell to them. Once it got to the 10th pick, I was hoping they would trade up for Davis. As it turns out, that's what happened, because he would not have gotten past Baltimore.

Having good players at a position is never a bad thing. If Mitch starts and lights it up, Pickett is first round trade bait next year for an extra day one pick.

Honestly, I never saw a Steelers defensive team get trucked in the run game like they did last year. If they don't fix that, it won't matter whose playing QB.

More importantly, what was the reaction of his girlfriend?

I was, as always, hoping for an offensive lineman. It's our biggest problem, and has been for years. It's the reason we can't run, and the reason we have to throw 2 yard passes all the time.

That said, I'm not terribly disappointed we got (likely) the best QB in the draft. I don't give a **** about the Pitt Panthers, so I don't have any emotional attachment to Pickett. I'll be pulling for him, or Trubisky, or God forbid Rudolph, for sure.

I would have liked Jordan Davis but he was already gone. Steelers have a lot of needs and I’d say just take BPA every round and BPA in the first round was Pickett.

Don't like highlight videos. Geez, they make Kordell look good. Here is every play involving Pickett vs. Clemson last year:

Several things. First, Pickett had ultra-happy feet in the 1st quarter. After that, his footwork was much better. Pitt receivers dropped three good throws so Pickett will be ready for DJ. Second, Pickett has good arm strength. He threw a really good ball from the right hash to the left sideline covering 25 yards, right on target, beating good zone coverage. Third, he is reasonably nimble in the pocket. Moves around maybe too much even, but he can evade pressure and if he sees open field, will run and get good yardage.

Agreed, that appears to be the logic applied.

I don't dislike the selection. Have to think they are targeting several players to augment the run defense. Hopefully one of them fits their value matrix when their pick comes. Steelers have a tremendous number of 2nd round busts on their record... Always astounds me.

This pick feels like Jarvis all over again. All the measurables are there screaming that this dude ain't got what he needs at the next level, but we ran up there and turned in the card.

Whatever.
He's a Steeler, so I would like nothing more than to be completely wrong about the pick

I still can't believe that the first qb didn't go until 20

Welcome aboard Kenny, I hope that you make the people on this board eat their words for doubting your small handed ***

Kenny Picket=Chad Pennington

At least Chad was only 22 when he was drafted lol

Pickett's game against Miami. Terrible interception on his last throw, where he had a WR streaking open at the 5 yard line, threw it way behind him for the pick when trailing 38-34.

Faced a ton of pass pressure, good at buying time in the pocket, runs for decent yardage when Miami went man and left nobody to watch him. Good accuracy for the most part, some dimes, particularly to the middle of the field.

Know who he reminds me of? Mac Jones. "Yeah, but SEC." He has a similar build, arm strength, mobility, and accuracy. Jones did not face anywhere near the pass pressure that Pickett did.
