Round one - Pickett

We won nothing the last 11 years with Ben and Tomlin and now we get a QB that is not in Ben's league talent wise or physically and we are still stuck with Tomlin and his idiot sidekick Canada. What could go wrong ?
See here is the thing. In the draft it is all about getting better as it should be. Anything outside of that is just that. Also comparing this QB to Ben? Where was Ben selected? How often do elite QBs drop in your lap? You don't short yourself competition when the value is equal or greater just because he isn't said player before him. You are building the best competitive roster now as much as possible. You can never lose sight of that.

Pickett has learned to throw with gloves to help his small hands but he still fumbles a ton. He will need to learn to put 2 hands on the ball any time he moves from the pocket and possibly even when he is in the pocket. Lost fumbles may be worse than int's.

We have a smart QB with a strong enough arm to make all the throws required by an NFL QB. He's a smart passer.

Thanks for the response. I admittedly have only seen some film and looked at some scout analysis, do his fumbles give you any cause for concern and do you think it will continue with larger footballs in the NFL? He's a Steeler now so I hope nothing but the best for him.

Well I think you just answered my question.

My hope is that is turns into a great player for us.

My feeling is that he will be middling backup in the NFL.

Here's why i think Pickett was the guy. Both Tomlin and Canada wanted a QB that could play immediately. Canada because he knows he's fired if his offense doesn't click this year. Tomlin because he wants to prove that it wasn't Big Ben making the steelers win.

In other words, the steelers took the opposite approach to other picks where they tend to go for future upside over immediate success.

Actually, they may have been on this trend for a few years, starting with the panic move to trade up for Bush.

you're giving Cool Shades too much credit, obviously

This ^^^

When Penning was gone at 19, I feared the Steelers would go QB. I TRULY feared they would take Kordell II, but fortunately that did not happen.

Jordan Davis, Jameson Williams, Chris Olave, Ahmad Gardner, Drake London, Treylon Burks, even Jahan Dotson, and Trevor Penning were all gone. Sorry, no massive DT to stuff the run, no elite WR, no superb OT left.

Berm, I am not a fan of the pick for a number of reasons, several of which you cited, but come on about playing in cold weather.

He is literally the only college QB to play multiple games at Heinz Field.
When does college season end??? And I'm not being funny - Pitt hasn't played a meaningful playoff game since when???

Berm, step away from the ledge. We love ya buddy.

:p

This makes sense. The guys that were already off the board didn't help either.

More importantly, what was the reaction of his girlfriend?

Big truth in these words.............................................

In her eyes the "rock" keeps getting smaller the longer he waits........................

My eyes were fixed elsewhere.

So you are "fixed", best let Backdoor Butternut Bob know about this............................... :lock1::hurt1:

Can't wait for Pickett & Trubisky to get into OTAs and training camp to get this thing going, competition is always good.

Salute the nation

I don't get the hate. I like Trubisky; I think he's going to play well. But there is certainly no guarantee that will happen. Pickett will be ready to step in and start if he doesn't. The Steelers now have two better options at quarterback than Mason Rudolph...which is a good thing.

They filled in some holes on the offensive line. They're set at running back and tight end. Alualu and possibly Tuitt are coming back to solidify the d-line. They got better at linebacker with Jack. Wallace is an upgrade in the secondary. Sure, there's some depth issues, but they already deftly addressed a lot of the major problems via free agency.

I'm assuming they'll take a wide receiver on day two, so they'll have strengthened the QB room and their weakest position. The best receivers were already gone earlier in the first round; there was no value picking a guy like Watson or Moore at #20. Personally, I probably would have taken Jermaine Johnson and then hoped Ridder would have been there in round two, but I can't blame the Steelers if they believe Pickett is their guy.
The whole point here is to win superbowls! That’s the standard! You don’t win superbowls drafting an average qb to challenge 2 other average qbs to see who can be the most average! it’s not hate on kenny had they spent the trubisky money on the defense and then we took kenny great! But they didn’t we got retreads for the defense! not guys that will challenge for the pro bowl but players thrown in the ditch and we are trying to squeeze a few more miles out of. We do not have a championship defense! Period! This isn’t hate on kenny it’s “here we go again!”

Is this the only year where we can draft a QB in the first round ? A first round QB should be a franchise QB and Pickett is not that. He can be a Trubisky but is that what we want. He was a teach and much better QBs are going to be available next year. We reached for a middling player everything else is just verbal diarrhea. Do you expect Tomlin and Pickett to do better than the poor results we got with Ben and Tomlin the last 11 years ? Thought so.

Let's maybe let the guy take the field before we label him a middling player?

Does he?

Fumbles per game (career) for comparisons (on the 2022 semi-mobile/pocket QB prospects):

*Using Fox Sports stats

0.68 fumbles, 0.43 lost fumbles per game = Desmond Ridder (4 seasons as starter)

0.54 fumbles, 0.21 lost fumbles per game = Kenny Pickett (4 seasons as starter)

0.52 fumbles, 0.26 lost fumbles per game = Matt Corral (last 3 seasons)

0.51 fumbles, 0.19 lost fumbles per game = Sam Howell (3 seasons as starter)

Pickett had 38 career fumbles. How many did the other guys have?

Larger football's in the NFL? Too bad he's not Tom Brady and can't take some of the air out of them to help with the grip. Heck yes, this is a concern.

The QB room consists of:
  • Kenny Pickett
  • Mitch Trubisky
  • Mason Rudolph
Yikes. You comfortable going into a shootout with these guys?

No it isn't the only year you can go for a QB. We have no idea what Pickett is. He hasn't suited up for 1 game. Sure we can guess. But if they think he can be a franchise they pull the trigger. If you think a player can be an upgrade you pull the trigger. Plenty of good QBs you can win with. Not all are considered franchise QB's.

Some didn't think Aaron was a franchise initially. They definitely didn't feel lady was. Etc. Others weren't taken high that developed.

Say Pickett shows to upgrade every QB on the roster. How can that be a bad move? In your head you want to wait for a QB that you might have a chance at. Then again you might not. Nothing guaranteed that next season you could get a prospect 1st overall. What if that is the only sure thing? Trick question there is no sure things.

Then maybe you say next year let's just grab an attractive free agent. Carr and AR already are locked up.

So what you wait three years? Keep waiting for that golden egg huh?

No when you have a chance at a QB that might improve your roster you take it.

Some think Tomlin isn't the answer as a coach, think a franchise necessarily changes that? If it doesn't do you just say **** it and don't try to improve?

You can't improve without trying. You can't win more without trying. Losers don't try or come up with a reason to not win.

My desire to win dwarfs any agenda or dislike on the team.

It isn't diarrhea to attack what is within your realm to attack. If Mitch isn't the answer which you and many others think be the case you try to find someone who is.

Oh look after the fact is once again complaining after the fact. You were crickets leading up to the draft. Why don't you continue being just that a cricket.

College playoffs involve four teams out of 131 FBS teams, Berm. The better analogy would be participating in the Super Bowl.

When's the last time the Steelers participated in a Super Bowl? 2011. Pickett was just 19 years old then.
