Rudolph to return

Bridgewater and Wentz have had their opportunities and thrown a lot of passes in the NFL. Both are known commodities. Both are going to cost more than Rudolph. I would guess Bridgewater ends up in that 4-5 million range and Wentz in that 10 million range when someone goes down and a team needs a starter. Wentz gets a bad rap but he is actually an ok NFL QB. There's a lot of teams with little depth that I am surprised is willing to go into 2023 with the likes of Sean Clifford or Stetson Bennett as the backup. I mean they are cheap but if injury happens both those teams are screwed. Of course the Pack is rebuilding and the Rams are probably going to throw the season.

I am also surprised if the Steelers were going to bring back a former QB they didn't reach out to Dobbs. He is like another coach in the QB room and sidelines. Rudolph seems more than happy to share information but from all accounts Dobbs was the better offensive mind.

Dobbs signed with Cleveland quite a while back…

I will eat crow on this one. I would have bet my left nut he would have went anywhere other than here. I mean there's a lot of easy backup spots with the potential of getting an injury start out there. Packers, Rams, Jax and maybe even San Fran if they trade Trey. Depending on how much he costs us it makes sense. I mean having a deep QB room is important especially with a young QB on the roster. But I honestly can't believe the Rams with a bum shoulder Stafford and the non-college graduate at 26 Stetson Bennet as a backup wouldn't throw an offer at Rudolph. Unless they plan on tanking to get Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.
I've given you a lot of **** in the past when we disagree on something. And, saying what I'm about to say won't stop me from doing so in the future.
However, that's a stand up move right there. You have my admiration for unapologetically and unabashedly eating your serving of crow. I salute you.

We didn't have a starting QB at the time. If Kenny gets picked before our pick last year none of the other top rated QBs in the draft were even close to starting material. Colbert rolled the dice with Trubisky and failed. Fortunately for the Steelers it turned out to be a positive.
Not sure how bringing a dangerously average at best QB aboard is a “positive”when we had already had a dangerously average guy waiting in the wings. Two average backups isn’t any better than 1 imo…no matter how many average backup caliber guys you put on the roster at QB it won’t mask the fact that without a legit GOOD QB a team is very limited.

Hopefully this season one of three can emerge and prove to better than average backup caliber

I will say this about Dobbs… he is a smart guy…
He signed with Cleveland… a team that wasn’t going to spend big money bringing in a backup QB… so he is basically guaranteed the #2 spot… and since Watson is still having women come out of the woodwork, he probably is on thin ice…not even counting his struggles last season…..With an injury, suspension or just a performance benching, Dobbs could realistically be the Browns starter by season’s end …

It's not hard to believe that the Rams didn't think that Rudolph was worth an offer. None of the other 30 teams thought so either, and the Steelers brought him back to fulfill his role in Pittsburgh as third-string quarterback. Because, despite your beliefs, that's clearly all that he is.

I don't find it to be as much as a stand-up move as you do. Notice, FFL's wording is specifically eating crow only about the fact that Rudolph is re-signing with the Steelers. He's not acknowledging that Rudolph isn't good enough to have generated any interest elsewhere, just noting his surprise that the guy is back in Pittsburgh.

At least that's the way I interpreted it.

I bet that raised eyebrows before reading further into your explanation. lol

I mean if winning was his plan he would have sat as a third string guy elsewhere… but If the closest path to starting was the goal… well you all know Cleveland’s history of rolling through starting QB’s

With Rudolph you have a known quantity - mediocre - that fits the psyche of this team.

It would be genuinely cool if we could trade Mitch. If KP8 goes down, the season is toast anyway, so let MR toast it, and cheaper. We have way more future with MR than with Mitch.

Mitch showed us that Chicago was right about him.

Do we actually know how much he is getting? I'm reading the comments as if it's an expensive hire

I too, would like to know the contract cost………..

I could see Mitch getting traded to free up his $7M salary and use Rudy as a back-up to KP. If they could get a 5th and cap space, why not? Rudy could hold down the fort for a few games, if needed.

You’re probably right. Mitch didn’t light anything up last year so I’d take that deal / trade all day.

Why do the Steelers have "way more future" with Rudolph than with Mitch? Mitch has a better career record, higher passer rating, and more mobility than Rudolph does.

The lack of interest from the rest of the NFL has spoken volumes about Rudolph. There is no future with him, in Pittsburgh or anywhere else.

Wentz is just horrible now a days. He went from potential league mvp to one of the worst QBs in the league after his injury. Bridgewater is not terrible i would have thought he would have got a backup deal at least. As for Mason I'm pretty shocked he is back. He seemed a little disgruntled and will more than likely be a 3rd string QB for us. I am surprised he didn't get a backup shot elsewhere. I don't have a problem with him being the 3rd QB, but he will be a costly 3rd stringer. If we run the offense we did the second part of last season I think all 3 QBs will look much better

Because Mitch will leave next year and MR won't

Cleveland is where QB's go to die. Hospice for QB's

Kahn already said they would like Mitch to stay as the backup beyond this year. You want your 2nd string QB to be able to come in and win some games for you. If you can get that from your 3rd string QB as well, then you did very well. Mitch and Rudolph can both come in and win games if KP goes down. You're not going to have a starter waiting at QB2, yet we almost do, and you definitely won't have one at QB3, yet Rudolph can come in and go .500 or close to it. Any team would take that in a heartbeat.

Nice post TDX27, that’s what is real about bringing Mason back. He has the ability to start and .500 ball is real too.

I once said that Rudolf would never return to PITTSBURGH, obviously I was wrong. It’s OK though.

There won’t be any animosity on Rudolf’s part as he knows what he is getting into. I 5think last year, there was content with-in and this year things will be more competitive and all QBs helping each other.

Rudolf has always been a team player, not in trouble outside the team, like-able, and seemed to put team first attitude into play as well.

We could do worse for a #3 and I’m happy to see things play out.

It seems like 31 other GMs showed us that the rest of the league looks at Rudy like many here do.

But yeah, I’ll take the cheaper mediocre all day

Because Mitch will leave next year and MR won't
You're right.

Unlike Rudolph, Mitch is good enough to generate interest elsewhere next season. MR's (way more) future in Pittsburgh will involve holding a clipboard, if he manages to dress for a game. So technically I guess that counts for something, sure.

People have said that Rudolph has a punchable face. I choose to be less extreme and just say that he has the face of a clipboard holder. He really does.
