That last drive was his final audition to come back to Pittsburgh next year and he failed miserably. Five weeks ago, I had hope that he might have had a rebirth to his glory days but that was abruptly extinguished since. Honestly, I don’t want Wilson or Fields back next year but I also have no idea who the realistic better option could be…. Sad state of affairs for us Steeler fans.

I honestly hope they stop manufacturing false hope hit bottom for a couple years move on from Tomlin and get a qb.

Don't get me wrong, Russ has indeed failed, but you can't blame it on the last drive...that pass to Freiermuth was right on the money, and yes, they would have had enough time to spike it and set up a field goal attempt.

1. Darnold
2. Wilson
3. Fields

Those are the top 3 free agent options.

I would be stunned if the Vikings let Darnold slip away from them, especially if the Vikings show out in the playoffs. Hell, we'd probably have an easier time trying to work a trade with Minnesota for JJ McCarthy

There were 11 seconds left when the pass was incomplete. Assuming that the pass was completed, Muth most likely would not have gone down and been touched immediately. This means that time is running out quickly. The play looked to be about 13 yards, to the 47. He has to try and get at least to the 38 for a 55yd FG attempt. I would guess that takes another 4-6 seconds to get the yardage and down by contact. That means that EVERYONE has to get 22yds down field and set so Wilson can spike the ball, all in 5-7 seconds. No way in heil does that happen. Pickens and his bad attitude would not have done it, let alone in that limited time.

The pass across the middle by Smith/Wilson doomed the very slight chance they had. Now if they had done it on 3rd down, maybe they have a shot. The only shot they had was an out route to get the 1st and out of bounds.

Across the middle, Muth had to take it the distance. The kid is not built for a 60yd TD through the middle of the Defense. He would have never made it.

I think the Vikings lock up Darnold. Unfortunately we are probably stuck with Wilson and the HC.

We are officially in Groundhog Day.

Fans should adjust accordingly.

There is 0.0 chance Mike Tomlin wants a guy who throws picks as often as Darnold does... even if he is the best passer available...
This would fall in line with his countless of year to year bad decisions.

This team can not win anything significant with their mindset.

None of this would have been an issue had he hit an open Pickens in stride just before that.

It’s a good thing Fields helped build a cushion by starting us at 4-2 as OldeRuss was recovering from the blocking sled whooping his a$$…anything less and the Steelers would be needing help today.

Only one way for OldeRuss to redeem himself, multiple playoff wins or hasta la vista hombre anciano

Plenty other opportunities to hit open WRs. It is the collection of fail that tells me that HC can’t micromanage him to his strengths and minimize his weaknesses.

You would need a team of collection of the best players at every position. And even then I have this odd feeling Tomlin would fluck that up.

I think the most tell tale sign is nothing ever gets better. It looks the same week after labour day and of course worse with injuries setting in.

Wilson can be the scape goat for sure. Last night reminded of when Ben played you saw when Tomlin took the handcuffs off play calling an allowed passing to be more than third down call. To late as we were conservative all night on offense. Watching replay this morning you see the weaknesses in this team, and it is not all Wilson.

Because they often can’t coach up players behind the injuries and even worse adjust their failed schematics until it is too late.

In game mis-micromanaging takes a talented team and tosses them in the trash can year in and year out.

So let me script next weeks put something in your mouth and bite down as you watch bad news bears of fun.

Steelers start out slow. Fall behind. Battle back and keep the game initially close due to player effort. Then the rats adjust and blow the team out of the water as someone stares on diligently.

B b b but there is always next year!

Definitely correct. That said I thought this team would be in position where signing Wilson and grabbing some weapons would make for a very exciting offseason. Instead back to groundhog day and basically I will just be happy it's over next week.

Was Wilson supposed to catch the ball as well as throw it?

Yes, it would’ve helped get a win, but in the grand scheme this is wrong. Hitting a deep ball and pulling out a scrappy win is exactly why this team is stuck in this cycle of mediocrity. They do just enough to beat bad and middle teams, but get their butts whooped by good teams.

It’s old and a non-stop cycle that many saw upwards of a decade ago, yet here we are.
