While it's a controversial topic, I don't think your stance is, at all. I think it's just about the most honest stance on the topic there is.
While it goes against the laws of nature and Christianity, I can't in my heart mandate that another human being be forced to do something (like that) they may not want to do. Right vs. wrong, good vs. evil, responsibility vs. recklessness etc., that's the individual's choice and their own cross to bear, if you will. But like you said, don't try to pretend it IS right because it is not. And bravo for your honesty and hopefully that got through to the other party in your heated discussion.
