So, who is it?

Gotta be Minkah. Didn't he and Cam kind of have words last year.

Minkah never looks like he's having fun anymore, like he doesn't have any friends on the team.

He's been absolute DOG SH*T this year. Gotta be him.

When I see Austin’s 12 plays on his play card and there is still confusion on where to be on the 12 plays we run I wonder…how the hell is this happening?

You’d think with such a small batch of predictable plays that if the offense knows all of our defensive player assignments maybe our defenders would too by week 17!

The only thing that can cover this problem is massive pressure and forcing turnovers, without both of those the D will continually be exposed for what it is.

Im not sure about Minkah he has been a pretty vocal leader in the past, but he may be disgruntled with the way he is being used and just going through the motions. That one year he was basically playing MLB having to tackle RBs constantly because our true MLBs stunk. Minkah might also be trying to do too much instead of sticking with his responsibility. Regardless the scheme is terrible and way too easy for opposing NFL coaches. Of course the players are not perfect, but they are not being put in positions to succeed.

1 guy can't cover everyone there are so many wide open receivers running around on each play it can't be 1 guy out of position or not doing his job this is a team wide break down .This goes back to the simple fact they have reached the standard for the year. .they just don't care

Maybe the guys don’t feel right going to battle
with the woman beater who is blowing coverages taboot. It’s not like Sutton is in a long term deal and can’t be benched…
and at least Beanie, even while making young guy mistakes, was at least getting some TOs.

The issue on D is it doesnt generate the pass rush needed for austin's man press stuff... and they play mincah super far back to try to mitigate the deep **** if the pass rush fails

This isnt a talent issue.. we just run a really basic pass rush scheme. Its not exotic blitzes or coverage... good offenses can key on a couple things and know when to take their shots...
the olbs are gonna rush around the edge... the dl will try to run stop on tge way to the QB
The ilbs almost never blitz...
safeties and cbs rarely if ever blitz
And they still can't communicate. It's fascinating. That is an excuse if I never hear again it will be too soon.

The problem was Kelce. Who was supposed to be on him. Idk.. but im thinking sutton.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that supposed to be one of Patrick Queen’s roles when signed?

I guess I’ve not been paying attention to this calling out one player situation. Just started reading about it. And apparently it’s been going on for a few games now? My question is. If there is one player that is not doing his job like Cam said,(and apparently others?) why was this particular player not put on the bench? Like instantly?

Or is this all speculation?

I think it may be Minkah that Cam is referring to. He had an issue in Miami, when he wasn’t being schemed to get the highlight plays. The rumor was that he wanted to seen as a ball hawk. Initially when he got here, since he really wasn’t up to speed on the D, they allowed him to roam. Then as it became obvious that the ILB’s were a weakness, he was forced to cover for then, which meant no highlight reels. Now as he is seeing contract time coming up, he is worried that he won’t get top dollar, and trying to highlight reels. The problem with that is he seems to be trying too hard and playing outside of what is expected of his schemed position. Add in the fact that the D scheme itself is awful and highly predictable, it seems that he feels even more worried about that next contract.

I don't see where there's a single player at fault. It seems to me (and that is not 20/20) that the entire D is not on the same page. Players have to know exactly what they are responsible for and that's it.

A lineman doesn't need to be concerned with what a safety is doing. They need to focus on stopping the run or sacking the QB, that's it and that's all, at least in my opinion which isn't worth more than a couple bits and bytes.

Again, barely 17 plays on Austin’s play card

We can’t realistically expect professional athletes to know their assignments at that extreme rate of knowledge consumption can we?

1 play a week is hard to get down

In this most basic of systems the D runs it seems we may really miss the “hand in the pile” coaching style of Mr Flores

There are breakdowns all over in this super basic scheme. It is unacceptable for the lowest paid D in the league. They certainly aren’t getting what they are paying for.

I don't think the Steelers are suggesting one single player is at fault. it appears to me a single sentence by Cameron Heyward has been taken completely out of context by a couple of sites trying to stir up controversy for views. This is the statement Heyward made "If there’s somebody free — 10 guys do their job and one guy doesn’t, we’re screwed.” Even as a stand alone coment it seems not to be directed at a specific player but a general statement that if just one player isn't doing their job on a given play the defence isn't going to succeed. Now here's the totality of what Heyward said (source: NBC Pro football talk):

“The last three weeks we played like ****,” Heyward said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “Simple as that. I own that. Every player’s got [to own that]. Can’t squander opportunities, whether it’s turnovers, whether it’s getting off the field, whether it’s scoring touchdowns, it’s a multitude of things, and it has reared its big head.
“My confidence is never going to lack in the group. It’s just from an execution standpoint, it’s just dumbfounding. We have to get it done on those plays. We sit up in meetings, we take it out to the field. That means nothing if you don’t do it in the game.”
Heyward added that there were communication breakdowns that cannot happen.

“We talk about execution, we talk about communicating,” Heyward said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “If there’s somebody free — 10 guys do their job and one guy doesn’t, we’re screwed.”

Clearly the last sentence is a reference to the fact that for the D to be successful all players need to be on the same page and carrying out their assigment, and if just one player doesn't then the D is going to have a hard time succeeding, not that there is one specific player who is the problem.

The defense is bad period. Especially the last three games they are bad. Communication is bad, guys getting confused and out of position. My God yesterday I saw a fat, slow, old Kelce wide open sitting in the middle of the field totally unguarded.
Are you kidding me.
Terrell Austin needs to be fired day after season ends. He was terrible in Detroit and Cincinnati but yet Shades hires him.
This franchise is badly broken and it goes much deeper than just a bad, overpaid, overrated defense.
Rooney has to stop trying to apply gauze and bandaids to a badly broken franchise.
Non losing seasons are not where the bar should be set.
no no no...he wasn't "unguarded", the Steelers have been playing this soft zone bullshit after LeBeau was canned. why the defenders don't close in on TE/WR/RB that enter the zone is beyond me.

I don't see how it's Wilson. He us a pup. He'd be at the bench faster then you can say sit down kid. Has to be an integral component that is not doing what he is supposed to. And hard to believe Roberts either. I don't think Fitzpatrick out of the frame is helping but kinda hard to believe that part is him. They would talk about it in film and he would dial it down. Tomlin doesn't want deep shots never has.

This. I find it hard to believe that every other team can be within 2 yards of our receivers but we have guys running wide open. Whether it is the chiefs giants or cowboys. We can’t cover And we can’t get open. This has been happening for years. 3rd and 12, we are 15 yards back. Who here feels confident on 3rd and 15 on D? All scheme and just like the O it doesn’t matter who the coordinator is. Year after year we change the parts but run the same exact scheme. All points to one guy’s philosophy and it isn’t working.

Sorry but if he’s alone with no one around him he’s unguarded. Zone whatever, he’s alone and that is unacceptable. Did you see when he made the one catch on a critical third down late in the game he literally lumbered to a first down. This zone is ridiculous I agree with you.

I love how Cam says 10 people doing there job and 1 guy not??
He should have said there is 1 guy doing his job year in and year out. TJ, and everyone else can't win a game without TJ. That would have been the correct statement.
It's 1 guys job to stop the run Cam?
Every single big game Cam has played in his career has been an embarrassing failure. To pretend like its one guy is a joke. Cam is a Joke and this Entire defense is a joke, has been for 10 plus years.

Cam is certainly not a problem for this team. kind of weird post.

Sign of a good defense is it getting off the field on field downs against good teams. That ain’t us and that’s never been a tomlin coached team

We had some of the same issues under LeBeau too. Short passes, covering the TE, and 3rd and long were issues under LeBeau. I think the main difference is at least LeBeau mixed things up and created some confusion. Toward the end the league was catching up to our schemes. Now we run a simplified version of that which makes it pitch and catch for a good O. Blitzes are rarely used now and TJ is getting double / triple teamed. Also mahomes was getting the ball out so quick the pass rush had no chance

It’s the defensive scheme not putting players in position to make plays. It’s Terrell Austin, it’s Mike Tomlin. Those are the two calling the defense.
Look at Steve Spagnolla the DC in KC what he was able to do with a defense minus their best player. He puts players in position to make plays.

Outside of TJ, which players on D have had better seasons this year than Cam?
