Texans, Hoyer 'headed for a divorce'

Per Rapsheet, "both sides sound OK with a fresh start." The Texans have tried to claim this wasn't the case, but it's been the obvious endgame since they lavished $72 million on Brock Osweiler. Due $5.25 million in the final year of his contract, Hoyer can likely be acquired for a day-three draft pick.

---------------------

He'd make a fine back-up.

WE know Ben can't possibly go 3 years in a row in his lucky bubble

No way in hell are we paying him 5 million. Not sure how much wed have to account for in a trade scenario.

Hoyer can likely be acquired for a day-three draft pick.

that likely means a 6th rd pick to you non-draft gurus...we can't keep picking the bottom of the barrel back-ups, it's going to bite us

The only reason Houston should keep Hoyer is if they think Tom Savage is totally useless. Savage should at least be able to serve as a backup by now. I still think they will draft a QB at some point.

Don't forget that Seattle spent a lot on Matt Flynn and then drafted Russell Wilson. Houston may do the same, especially if Hackenberg is sitting there for them in RD 2.

Pass, rather let Vaughn and a 6-7th round pick fight it out. Wouldn't doubt if there was a handshake deal for Gradkowski to come back in the mix post draft like we did with Batch as long as his shoulder is healed.

I'd look at TJ Yates or Austin Davis before Hoyer if they are still available. He'll want to much $. If they were to cut him and he came back for around 2 years 3m or so I'd have to reconsider him as an option.

Nobody's going to trade for his contract, ain't happening. I'd gladly sign him as a free agent. He's better than Gradkowski and Jones, and it's not really close.

....been saying it for months. I take him in a ************* heartbeat. This isn't an aww shucks, we have Landry and will draft another QB. When have the Steelers EVER entered a training camp without a vet backup? I can't remember, can you? You restructure Timmons and AB and poof, we have a viable backup that can win games if Ben goes down. Otherwise we hang our championship season on Landry freakin Jones if Big Ben gets dinged again...

while i agree with the basic point of your post Cope, let's be real. if ben is out for any significant amount of time/end of the season it won't matter if hoyer, yates, davis, jones or gradkowski is the starter. 7 won't happen

Eh, if the Texans flat out release him, he may be worth a look. No way would a trade be involved.

That's my point - Landry ******* Jones and some undrafted scrub as back-up on a division winning team isn't good enough - you can't just throw away the season. I get sick of that answer.

@NFLTotalAccess: #Texans and QB Brian Hoyer appear headed for a divorce and both sides sound OK with a fresh start. He's available

Hoyer is due $4 million in 2016 with no guaranteed money, so the team could cut him with no salary cap ramifications.

you could also sign him to a three year contract and lower his cap hit

I'd take the deal. Hoyer is a good back up, far better than Landry Jones.

The question is, does he want to play here. Tomlin already parted ways with Hoyer as a Steeler.

Hoyer sucks, there is a reason the Texans were in the market for a new QB

He doesn't need to be a star , just better than the garbage we've employed the last few years.

Yep, if they're headed for a divorce, then why trade? Wait till he's free.

Put Hoyer in with our players on offense, and we'd actually be able to throw the ball and score, which was a problem when Jones or Vick had to play. When Ben was out the best WR int he NFL was pretty much an average player.

Ben isn't playing 16 games this season. Let's say he misses three. A win with Hoyer that would have been a likely loss with Jones or Vick could make the difference in making the playoffs.

A no-brainer type of move, especially for a 6th or 7th round pick.

Heck, we spent a 5th round pick for a year on a player we didn't use and a 6th on a kicker.

A legit backup QB is a need. Make the move Colbert!

Not for that salary. If he gets cut and will play for 2 mil, the yes.

I'd take Hoyer in a heartbeat...IF...he's willing to tutor whatever QB is drafted by the Steelers. That's how I'd see his role. Yes, his job as a backup is to relieve Ben in case of injury...he needs to be able to win 2 games. That's it. 2... Ben is usually out for about 3-4 games then he's back...our backup needs to be able to get 2 wins in that time period, like Charlie Batch.

Hoyer absolutely can get you 2 games. BUT...the most important thing is to help in the development of the next guy.

How about Hell no. Or **** no or **** no... I think I have made my point.

I don't want a ****** qb teaching my "next" guy anything, unless it is "watch me and don't do **** like this"

hoyer might not be as ****** as what the Steelers have backing Ben up now...but he is still just a different level of ****** qb...I would rather roll the dice on an unknown that pick up another garbage qb

Texans Cut Hoyer, Could Steelers Have Interest?
http://www.Invalid Link - Check SN Home Page/2016/04/texans-cut-hoyer-steelers-interest/

Ok, I’m going to break one of my cardinal rules here. I normally despise the typical “the Steelers should sign Player X” right after a transaction. But when one of those players is someone who spent their time in Pittsburgh, there’s a little more bite to it.

The Houston Texans officially cut quarterback Brian Hoyer today. That’s been clear as say after giving a mega-deal to Brock Osweiler, and obviously without being able to find a trade partner, the team finally relented and gave Hoyer his pink slip.

You’ll remember Hoyer spent about three weeks with the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2012. Signed on November 20th, cut on December 8th. The Cleveland Browns signed him for the following season and he played reasonably well the next two years, going 10-6 as a starter, practically Hall of Fame status for Cleveland. That included a 31-10 beatdown on Pittsburgh in 2014. Though Hoyer completed just eight passes on the day, he threw for 217 yards, including a 51 yard touchdown to Jordan Cameron.

The Steelers signed Mike Vick last year and you can bet Vick’s performance against the Steelers in 2014 had an influence on the decision. Play well against Pittsburgh and you’ll get noticed.

Hoyer spent last season with the Houston Texans, starting nine games and having a positive regular season before utterly collapsing in the playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. That ugly performance aside, Hoyer has enjoyed himself a decent career and knowing any starting interest would be thin, is likely comfortable being a team’s #2.

So could that place be Pittsburgh? Mike Tomlin has hinted at a desire to upgrade the backup to Ben Roethlisberger. In his end of the year presser, Tomlin told the media he would evaluate his backup spot depending on “what my options are.” Hoyer is arguably the best option this free agency class has seen. Though Landry Jones showed signs of progression, it’s a no-brainer that Hoyer would be preferred.

And as I write this, Jason La Canfora indicates Pittsburgh certainly does have interest.

Texans have released QB Brian Hoyer. He will be in demand. Steelers among those interested in him
— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) April 17, 2016

Though this is obviously pure speculation from me, I would go as far to say that Pittsburgh could be the favorites for Hoyer. It’s a win-win. Hoyer gets brought into a healthy, stable environment with a chance to win while the Steelers get a dependable, veteran backup with experience starting and coming off the bench, the ideal match for what the position demands.

Dave Bryan seems to think it would be a two or three year deal which seems entirely reasonable. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Pittsburgh bring Hoyer in this week, perhaps as early as Monday.

I'd like Hoyer as a back up too. Anyone of Landry...except Vick

I know I was totally against it but at this point we can't go into the season with Jones as the backup. He is just terrible. I'd take him.
