It’s painfully clear that our defensive backfield is fraudulently bad. Especially Minkah. When you don’t have any real responsibility (free safety), it’s easy to make plays. But that means your freedom brings a responsibility to MAKE PLAYS. Minkah hasn’t. Further, we have zero talent at CB behind the two starters. We lose games because we give up easy pass plays designed to beat crappy defensive coordinators.

Minkah 2024 is f’ing GARBAGE first and foremost. He needs to go this offseason or nothing will improve defensively.

Porter, when he isnt drawing flags, has a pretty low passer rating when targeted..

DJ is an average CB

Trice has great numbers, but cant stay healthy..

I cant get a feel for Sutton

Pierre is a ST guy.. he will do well for a game as an injury fill in then totally blow coverages till he gets benched

Mincah just plays deep boring coverages...
Elliot is a playmaker at SS

Kazee is a hitter at S... not really a coverage guy
Killebrew is just a ST guy

Bishop sometimes is good and sometimes is lost... like a rookie...

People need to quit thinking its a talent issue in the DB... its the goofy scheme... Austin runs a heavy Man press system... the DBs arent great at zone... tomlin loves switching to zone at key points...

Either way the front seven is too predictable and only gets pressure on physical ability... they rarely blitz and rarely do elaborate stunts and without that extra pressure, the coverage breaks down

I remember in the beginning of the year people thinking this was the best secondary in years. what changed

DJ is decent when not playing with the nagging back

JPJ got exposed in his mass penalty outing and lost some effectiveness when not holding so much and now is out

Sutton came in for Beanie, same blown assignments but no TOs

Elliot is good when not hampered by hammy

Minkah still a mile away from the action most plays

There is potential, but they look a lot better when healthy and have all the starters…they also require pressure which the playing dinged up Watt is the key to. If he ain’t right the D ain’t right. Highsmith and Herbig are cute but they’re no Watt

And good lawd if Pierre or Killebrew are playing anything other than STs bad things will happen.

EXCELLENT post.

Scheme has been B-A-D for a long time. We rush 4 and they have 5/6 to block, that negates our ALL World ILB quite often (just an example).

Salute the nation

all of this. and..
Teams have figured out how to slow down the pass rush. No rush? no pressure? Secondary looks ordinary or less

Once TJ is healthy again things will improve a bit

But they also need to move him around a bit more. Sure start him in his normal role but if the opponent has schemed him out of being able to wreck their game have a contingency plan that involves moving him around some. We can’t make it easy to scheme his impact out of the game.

You’re right tho…the secondary looks ordinary at best when the pressure isn’t there, that’s why they must come into games with contingencies to apply pressure.

I would have little problem with JPJ, DJ, and Trice manning our top 3 CB spots. As a rookie, Beanie has shown he should be in the mix in the slot moving forward.

We need to get better pressure up front now that we rarely blitz anymore. Watt and Highsmith are not enough and even throwing in Heyward and Benton isn't enough. We seriously need to look at how we run our D. Does the 3-4 work anymore especially when you are really running a 2-4 in our "sub package" football. Only having 2 big guys on the DL is not working anymore. I still say we need a big NT that can command double teams and collapse the pocket. It still baffles me when pundits say NT's are not needed anymore because of subpackages. I'd rather have 3 big uglies up there with one of our OLB's dropping into a zone coverage or having all 5 go after the QB. We aren't getting consistent pressure anymore and we get run over by and team that has both a decent run game and decent passing game.

I will not stop calling for our draft to be DL, WR, DL, RB in that order. Our DL needs to be rebuilt as Kahn and Wiedl did with the OL. The OL would have been fantastic this year if not for losing 3 starters.

Tomlin doesn't trust "next man up". At the moment one goes down, the entire defence shifts to some idiotic zone that allows 20 yards passes down the field each play! He should be thinking "oh ****, let's blitz the hell out of them so we don't let our guy get exposed so much"
