" Over the years, football fans have pretty much agreed on which top-tier veteran quarterbacks fall on which tier. The first tier generally includes, in no particular order, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. The second tier: Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan. And then there are the talented but inconsistent gunslingers who float from one tier to another, guys like Tony Romo, Matthew Stafford and Jay Cutler.

The star quarterback people can’t seem to firmly slot is Ben Roethlisberger. Fans all agree he belongs on one of these tiers. In fact, he seems to fit on all three.

The truth is, Roethlisberger belongs on that first tier. He’s 2-1 in Super Bowls, has a career winning percentage of .669 as a starter and, most importantly, his on-field performance verifies his on-paper accomplishments. "

At worst, he would be on the 2nd tier and at the top of the list on the 2nd tier. It's tough to put him with the 1st tier because he doesn't have the stats. He just puts up the W's.

Stats mean **** if you can't generate the wins .

Seems to me that it would be appropriate to say "even though he doesn't put up FF stats, it would be tough to keep him off the 1st tier because puts up the W's."

Let me buy you a drank, gal...

Excellent article.

I take Aaron Rodgers off that first tier and put him in the second tier and I also place Ben in that second tier. I think Rodgers and Roethlisberger are in the upper end of that second tier but neither are Drew Brees or Peyron Manning. I think Matt Ryan has the potential to be in that top tier just not sure if he will reach it or not. Flacco probably tops out at top second tier if he can string some nice seasons together.

Wait what? Rodgers out of the first tier and Ryan with potential to be there? Are we talking about the same guys?

What has Ryan done to even be considered anywhere near top tier? Bizzaro world for sure.

No way is rodgers out of the 1st tier, matt ryan will never be 1st tier

Elite
Aaron Rodgers
Ben Roethlisberger
Drew Brees
Tom Brady (Trending down.)

Tier 2
Phillip Rivers (Returned to form last year. Expecting another big year.)
Russell Wilson (Could push elite status if he continues being so efficient.)
Eli Manning (Just get him to the playoffs...)

Could be higher if they weren't busy choking on their own failure
Peyton Manning (Ultimate choke artist. Will not win you a championship on his own.)
Matt Ryan (Peyton knockoff)
Tony Romo (Statistically, very efficient. **** when it matters.)

Non-**** starters overrated by the mainstream, but with potential
Andrew Luck (Wildcard.)
Cam Newton (I hate the guy, but he's actually been decent. Needs some receivers, lol.)
Nick Foles (I don't think he's the QB he looked like last season, but we'll see.)
RGIII (Never was impressed by him.)
Colin Kaepernick (Has Slash written all over him. lol)

Thing that holds Ben's rankings back somewhat in the eyes of many is that his offensive stats in the SB's weren't really that good and the perception (if not reality) that the defense won those games. Still, he's the best QB we've had since Bubby.

I think that is why he wears #7 --- just a bit better than #6

Hilarious!!!!! Lots of truths posted, but just NO way Ryan is above Ben Rothlesburgher. Just no way. I thinking Ben is top 4, maybe five. Joe fucco, who ever thinks he is above Ben, I'll have a word and Mean Joe Bradshaw you right the **** out! !!

I seem to remember our defense giving up a double digit lead in Super Bowl XLIII, and Ben had to lead a drive that started with a hold, and him running for his life on a couple plays, and ended up throwing not one, but two perfect passes in the end zone. If that were Brady or Manning that lead that drive, it'd be on a constant loop on the NFL Network.

Those who think Brady, Peyton, and Brees were/are on some magical, untouchable tier of sheer greatness, and that some lunchpail douchebag who doesn't pad stats with 25 bubble screens a game doesn't belong up top.. are wrong.

no way Ryan deserves to be even close to the top tier

Ben's stats in XLIII were superb.

70%, 8.53 YPA, 1 crazy, batted INT, 1 88 yard, game winning TD drive.

All with the worst starting OL to ever win a Super Bowl.

Ben's stats in XL were ****, but he was ******* 23 (2nd youngest to ever start a SB, after Marino) and understandably nervous. His stats in that run prior to the Super Bowl were ******* crazy good.

His stats in the 2010 loss were decent as well, considering one of his two interceptions was an end-of-game-desperation-heave and the other was the blown block by Kemo's worthless *** where he was hit as he threw from the endzone.

The ONLY reason brady and pineapple head are considered so great, is they have a few more years of playing under their stats. Ben will catch or close the gap a lot. Watch this season, he should lite it up. Those of you who don't think he is HOF, will be thin king twice in the next couple years. This new offense, will be way better suited to our guy, look out NFL.

Damn, I'm almost getting a woody. I like the optimism.

Better, and the TD to Stonio was great, but if James Harrison doesn't run an interception back 100 yards they probably don't win that game. Ancient history now but I blame The Bruce's playcalling for the mediocre stats more than I do Ben.

Seems to me that it would be appropriate to say "even though he doesn't put up FF stats, it would be tough to keep him off the 1st tier because puts up the W's."

I certainly agree but most outside of the Steeler Nation won't. Ben isn't a traditional QB but he is a winner and has won multiple SB's. To me, that makes him elite. He won't get the credit he deserves until he not only wins another SB but puts up a MVP performance in the SB.

Wait what? Rodgers out of the first tier and Ryan with potential to be there? Are we talking about the same guys?

I live in Wisconsin and watch a lot of packers games. Rodgers is hyped by the media so everyone thinks he is great but he couldn't hold Peyton or Brees jock. Pop gun arm and the entire offense is predicated on him just making one read and three steps and throw. He's a very good QB but if you put him on another team he doesn't make them better. You put Brees or Manning on any team they are better off. So second tier.

Matt Ryan has all the tools but like Roethlisberger has not taken advantage of them and took the necessary steps to be a top tier guy. Third tier right now and he probably maxes out at second tier but if IF he does put it together he could make that jump to elite.

How can you compare Ben to Ryan? Yeah Ben stats in his first super bowl were poor, but the playoff run to get there was great, guys have career years when they play with him, Miller, Wallace, Brown, not sure about Ward. His career comp%, qb rating aren't that far off of Brady's and Ben has never been given the keys to the offense like Brady and Manning have been, they run the no-huddle whenever they want.

Because with Bens size, strength, arm, and god given natural ability he is superior than Brees or Manning but he still (imho) hasn't taken that next step and become a top tier guy. Ryan is definitely further behind but again he has all the ability in the world just has not put it all together. Also, Ryan just turned 29 so there's still a chance but he really needs to take that next big step this year.
