Steelers release Mason Cole

I'm thinking this move signals that a FA Center's agent has indicated to the Steelers, via a "mutual friend", that they would like to sign with the Steelers. Most likely, that mutual friend has let that player's agent know what the Steelers would be willing to offer and an unofficial agreement has been brokered.
Or something like that.

Here is the STEELERNATION.COM article on this very thing.

Now we MUST address the center position and hope they actually improve it.

NO projects, either a bonafide Center or nothing. I’ll suit up if need be.

Cole was a very good teammate and person. I wish him well and thank you for your Steelers time here.

Which would you be suiting up as, a bonafide Center ... or nothing? Asking for Omar.

Well, even the “nothing” would make pretty good $$$BANK$$$, so I suit up for where they need me !!!!!!

I will also pack samiches and Sodium Free V8 juice for all that come to watch.

Well, you could take JPJ in rd.1 and maybe a T.J. Tampa at CB. Or hope Mckinstrey or Arnold is still around then get Frazier in rd.2 or Cedric Van Pran. I am hoping they sign a veteran OT.

Cole wasn't horrible, but he didn't fit what they wanted.. kind of like when they tried Sean Mahan ...
I dunno he was bad in run sets and pass blocking. I guess it depends on your definition of horrible, but his play was below the....line. Enough to where i didn't care for him to be retained as a backup.

They signed an average g/c and asked him to do stuff that prime pouncey could barely do... and he was so focused on getting off the snap to his blocks that he would botch a snap or two, then focus on the snaps and miss blocks...

I blame scheme more than the player... you cant expect Vinnie testaverde to run the Lamar Jackson offense... you dont ask Hines ward to run Mike wallaces speed routes and expect the safeties to back off... sometimes fitting the plays into the strengths and weaknesses of the players has to happen... Cole wasnt going to chip a guy then get two gaps over to make a block... And as for a backup.. we have Herbig on the roster already... we dont need overredundancy

Thought Cole was a decent addition back in 2022. He just ended up not being very good. Great to see the Steelers continuing to clean house and cut out the dead wood.

His previous season he was dare I say the best Olineman in the team, he regressed, badly.

Thoughts on James Daniels going back to Center and drafting a Guard? That would help targeting a guy like Frasier who can also play both positions.

Good. Now we only have one lousy player named Mason. We don't need 2.

Not very many people named Mason. Funny how the Steelers ended up with both of them.

The only other Mason I ever heard of was some Southerner...Mason Dixon.

The other thing is that I keep hearing that the Steelers are extremely high on Spenser Anderson and Dylan Cook.... as fans, we tend to overlook developing low asset guys... both could be starters which could fee up high end assets for other positions

This seems like what happens after the team says " next year, we want to pay you $3M" and the agent refused. I'd imagine that similar discussions are being had with several vets on D. Time will tell; seems the FO has a new sheriff.

I think they're comfortable with Nate Herbig and Spencer Anderson, I'm sure they'll sign someone to compete there too, maybe JPJ one them over at the senior bowl

Another Mason who was well below the line.

DL and OL (C or even another tackle but they seem set on Moore who is not very good) are still the top 2 needs. CB, WR, and ILB are all in the next level of needs. We'll see how free agency mixes these up.

DL I read isn't a good option for us this draft, not many that fit the mold apparently. We better get one in free agency if we want to upgrade, though if they keep both Cam and Larry O I think there's little chance for the FO to bring a high value free agent.

With the unexpected hike in salary cap that should bring the team to about 9 million under. And I imagine they will do something with Robinson and or Peterson's contract as well.
So Slash we have had this discussion so many times in the past. This really shows how poorly this team is mismanaged. Kicking dumb salaries down tge road to build paper thin house of cards teams. This team is on the books for about 3 million in QB room and is a measly 9 million under. I bet the Chiefs have at least that much. Honestly it's criminal.

DL isn't great. That's why we have to take one in the 1st or 2nd round. The Steelers can't keep kicking the can down the road on our DL.

I do not hate the move, Cole was just bad. My only concern is now we are really desperate at center
We were really desperate before cutting Cole too. I would have been more concerned if we kept him.

I am thinking there is two solid options that IMO would be a clear upgrade over Cole.

Tyler Biadasz Cowboys and Lloyd Cushenberry. I lean towards Biadasz as my favorite option but Cush isn't far behind.
I'd wager Spencer Anderson would've been a better option than Cole was
Hard to not be able to jump over the hot garbage hurdle that Cole was

And bout time Steelers!!!

an obvious move that needed to happen

Don't answer the phone this week Peterson or Robinson, just sayin'
