Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

I thought the vid was funny as hell. But im not surprised his daddy didnt. Use it as motivation kid.

He posted some video of his own. Frankly Archer might just be better than many are thinking he will be. He is not the Bus. He does take some hits in the game and gets up just fine. He seems to run very well. At one point stiff arms a player off of him and puts much larger player on the ground. Now I understand the only way that could have any bearing on anything would be if the guy was twice the size of Hiloti Nata, but the kid is likely better than many of us thought. In looking at his size I thought the kid is not likely to make it and was a wasted draft pick. But after all these posts I am now beginning to think we may have something useful in this kid. I am hoping he surprises us all.

And it continues...

I want this kid to succeed!!! I know his size is questionable, but I say let TIME tell the tale. He may be injured / small / puppet / but until he is tested, no assumptions can honestly be made. If he pans out, awesome. If NOT, then he can join the other third rounders, in their life's work.

dude, you've read this board for awhile. even if Dri suplexed Ngata off the top ropes of SummerSlam and threw him completely out of the ring, before giving him a pile driver off the surrounding fences, some of the ******* here would clutch their skirts and scream that his technique was poor. Face it, Dri is going to be a whipping boy until he either retires or signs with another team. Anything good he does, there will be a jackass saying he was a wasted pick in the 3rd round. Anything badly that he does, someone will trot out their 10-others list and declare it the bestest ever list of guys we could have taken at that point in the draft. Those are the extremes, but this is Steeler Nation.

Glad there are no 300 lbs plus players in the Mac cause archer would all ready be snapped in half.

I think they just weighed the odds and see it as a long shot that was taken too high. There is sure a few extreme posters. But to me most look like they are middle ground, hoping for the best. I know I am..........................

Personally I hope every pick makes it.

Realistically I know it won't work out that way.

I think Archer has the ability to wow,

he also has the ability to get crushed and fumble.....

A discussion.......... people are going to throw out obvious red flags....

I think for a fair amount of posters that is what they were doing, more than wishing him to fail................

And if he never even makes it to the field? Right, all those that slobbered all over his jock won't say a word and will never even admit they were wrong or they even cared about the guy. They'll move on to the next rookie love session. I remember all the Frank "The Tank" Summers love a few years ago. He was the next Bettis. He had quick feet, strong and NFL ready. Not ONE person ever said a word after he busted. Just moved on. I also remember when Bruce Davis was the next great Steeler LB. I hated the pick. Absolutely hated it. TMC and I went on for days about him. TMC and many others liked the pick. After he busted only TMC ever said a word about being wrong. I loved the Rainey pick. TMC and I went around about that. After he busted I told TMC and the few others that I was wrong. I really thought he'd be a great asset. He wasn't.

My issue is that Archer is a 3rd round pick. I don't value small, short KRs that aren't projected to play any other position that high. 5th round? Sure. But not in the 3rd in a draft EVERYONE called the deepest in years. That's not where you take shots. That's where you get a Mike Wallace, Keenan Lewis, or a Sanders who maybe able to start in a few years.

Nobody wants to admit they are wrong. I solve that problem by withholding judgement. Let the kid play and we'll see. I just do not understand why that is so damn hard.

The line to me is probably a 13+ AV (a rating created by Football Reference.com) over his rookie 4-year deal.

If you look at the 2010 draft, they are 4-years in, and 21 out of the 34 3rd round draft choices have a 10+ AV so far in their careers. Here's the breakdown:

0-4 AV = 10 players
5-9 AV = 3 players
10-14 AV = 9 players
15-19 AV = 6 players
20-29 AV = 4 players
30-39 AV = 1 player
40+ = 1 player

This was supposedly a "deep draft" and I would expect Archer to have a 13+ AV over his rookie deal to be considered a valuable commodity and providing some form of return on investment. To say I (or anyone else here) would consider him a failure "no matter what he does" is ludicrous.

Personally, I don't think he hits 13+ AV. I think he will be very limited in his participation on offense and I don't think return "specialists" are really all that special (nor deserving of considerable AV scores). We will see how Football Reference rates his contributions over his rookie deal.

It isn't hard it just totally removes the purpose of a board where people give opinions. There are several very smart bright people on here that have very good opinions. I respect that even if I don't always agree with them. TMC and I butted heads for years. I was a total "pick for needs" guy in the draft until I realized he was right. Go for the talent. Nothing wrong with people giving their opinions about Archer. I just don't like being labeled some type of "hater" because I point out something so obvious that a 1st grader could understand it. That's bullshit. And I've said many times before, even if he turns out to be a decent KR, PR, trick play guy, I don't value those in the 3rd round. Why is that so hard?

I respect your football knowledge and opinions quite a bit, but my perception is that your posts are negative 99% of the time. The basic formula is "you are wrong, player [x] is terrible at this and that and there is no possibility of improvement." That would be why some people would slap the "hater" label on you. Again, it's just my perception that I am stating honestly...I am in no way attacking you. But I do wonder whether you actually get excited when the Steelers play a good game, go on a winning streak etc. because from the tone of your posts it would just seem like you are waiting for something bad to happen to support your view that a big percentage of our roster is garbage.

I can see why you have that opinion but do you even know what I've said about the rest of the draft? Probably not because all anyone wants to talk about is Archer. This thread would have died many many pages ago but the "I love the pick" people wouldn't drop it. They even started posting non-sense just to keep the thread alive. They love to poke and prod people to try and get a rise from them. I think they hate posters on here more than they really like the Steelers. I wouldn't be shocked if they stopped watching football all together if everyone started loving every pick.

You can ask my wife how I feel about the Steelers. I've watched them since I could see a TV. I couldn't be around people if they lost when I was younger. I've mellowed some but I still feel bad when they lose. I'm a huge Big Ben fan and defended him again all those who wanted to trade him and "move up" to draft Teddy Bridgewater. In Hindsight I guess we wouldn't have needed to trade up. But again that's one of those things nobody talks about anymore. Most can't even remember who wanted to do that. But I do. I was a huge Ward fan. I defended him.

But I have no problem telling people what I think about draft picks. I think Archer is small, short and has very little pass catching ability. Why do I say that? Because I've seen his film. I said almost at the start of this thread that he is a RB... period. His coach even said it was a mistake to put him out wide. They only did that to show case him to the NFL. But it showed me he wasn't a WR. His catch radius is that of a high school player.

I love the Shazier pick. With the new NFL you need speed at ILB. He's is perfect for this new type of defense. He played at a high level for a major program. I loved the Tuitt pick. I'm ok with the Bryant pick. I'm good with the rest of the draft. Would I have taken a different player at a couple positions? Probably. But it isn't important because there was nothing wrong with the value of those picks. I'm a value guy. Would I take Tom Brady in the first round? Absolutely. But if I could get him in the 6th I'd do that 100 out of 100 times. That's why I'd never take a punter in the top 4 rounds. I'd never take a PR, KR that has no chance to start in the top 3 rounds. 4th round? Maybe but it depends on who else is there. I'm rambling now so I'll stop.

Lol really Vader the people who said give him a shot before we cut him are the reason this thread went crazy??
Most took issue with Idioteque's over the top views..

It seems that Vader thought Rainy was a great pick. Well he did have over 1000 yards in returns but got kicked off the team for off the field issues. So he's a bust!! Now Vader thinks archer is a lot like Rainy so he's doesn't want to be wrong again. Archer is no Rainy! The only thing in common is they are smaller fast 40 time guys.

Understood. I never called you a hater. Hell, I don't like the pick, but 81 pages? It's a 3rd round draft pick. I am not minimizing them, but I am also not overvaluing them, either.

I would say that around page 35 it should have died and let the guy play. All the opinions are out there now. The opinions where out there 50 pages ago. See what happens.

I get tired of people hiding behind this is a board and all that. Say what it really is. What people really want is to give their opinion, have their *** kissed and have everyone agree with them. That is why it lasts for 81 pages.

you sure got your panties twisted about that.
hell, I'll go on record as saying I wanted Watkins, CB, Florida instead.
doesn't matter at all at this point though.

and, like you, I was THRILLED when we got Rainey. Though something tells me Archer isn't Rainey.

You do realize they are standing a shoe width apart. How much closer do you want them to stand?

Has anybody mentioned Dri's number?

Has anybody mentioned Dri's number? Yes, it's 34.

It is 13..............

Dri Archer has missed both practices. (illness)

Bustadriarcher!!

Christ, he's probably down to 168 lbs. now.

More hasn't signed contract yet doesn't want to get hurt

add fuel to the fire!

Geez what a bust. Is Noel Devine available?!

Now if only his head could be too big and count for some of his height, maybe a disproportionate amount we might have something.

Yes! 75 is almost here! 100 here we come!!!

somewhere dr frankenstien is yelling: "its alive! its alive!"

Loosing steam, starting to die out.................. about to put a fork in it, but, just to note, the fat lady hasn't sang yet :)

Saw on Steelers Depot that Archer already has a Capital One commercial. He races 50 yards up and back against a geek making a Cap One mobile transaction. He loses.

This abound generate another page or two

Ben would disagree about max Starks also I think

These are the quote just from page 70 and one tenth of page 71. ALL of them are Archer defenders trying to keep the thread alive and even saying so. So it appears antdrewjosh is wrong... again.

Lol really Vader the people who said give him a shot before we cut him are the reason this thread went crazy??

Wrong.. and why are they Archer defenders. More like people wanting just keep the thread going as a joke once it reached a certain point.. and what was i wrong about...again?? Since this all opinions on a message board. Lol

AMEN brother!!!!

Like him or not, he is a STEELER. I'm rooting for him, like I do other players, hoping he pans out. If he sizzles it up, more power to him. If he flames out, then we should do better next draft. The world will turn either way.
AND yes I am guilty of helping to keep this thread alive :)

Can you even read? There was no purpose in any of those posts except to keep the fire going. You're the only one who even posted anything remotely close to concerning Archer. So you're wrong... again. You can even read what my original post was. I said NOTHING about the post going "crazy". You just added that word to change what I said. I said:

This thread would have died many many pages ago but the "I love the pick" people wouldn't drop it. They even started posting non-sense just to keep the thread alive.

But instead of talking about what I really said, like you always do, you added to it to make a point. I NEVER said anything about the thread being crazy. That's just you being you and wanting to lie and deceive.
