Steelers VS Dolphins game thread

Actually, I think the folks who hated drafting him the most were myself, @slashsteel and @bermudasteel. We each have been realistic that many of Kenny's mistakes are Rookie mistakes and hope that he learns/progresses. There's also about 3-4 of his INTs that are results of catchable balls his WRs have tipped.
Now, there are also those folks who won't admit that the kid even makes mistakes. Home Town Hero and all that.
Yep my biggest concern was his one good college year of production. I thought overall the QB class was underwhelming. Still not overly high on the class. But I thought Pickett performed better in camp than what I anticipated. I thought they dragged their feet starting him. And yeah a lot of typical rookie mistakes. But besides the downfalls I think there is some throws that are impressive. Obviously he has to clean those INTs up, especially in critical moments. That last INT was from being impatient and forcing it in there or trying to. Another was from reading their D wrong and yeah some past ones were WR induced.

I think the kid has a high floor overall. As in a Carr type QB with the ability to be more than that. Still wait and see but I like some parts of his game. Hopefully they continue to give him his build opportunities.

This season is done. The Eagles will destroy us. They are good in all facets of the game. That puts us at 2-6 going into our bye. Even if we go 5-4 (which is a huge stretch) after the bye, we are 7-10. Our season isn't statistically over (and I will never pick against us) but, realistically, Tomlin is getting his first below .500 season.

Is the trade deadline before or after that game? Should we and do we make any moves looking toward the future? Our drafts have not been the greatest. My guess is we sit tight, do nothing, and ride out this year of suckness and possibly 1 or 2 more until they build a team around Pickett. They need multiple guys on the OL and DL first. They need LB help, especially in the middle. They need a real starting CB. I think Cam has one more year on his contract. Do they sign him to a 3rd contract? You hate to see him leave but I don't know if he has more than another year in him at a high level and for huge money.

We are simply not a good team in any phase of the game, obviously.

ENDED the season with those numbers. Look at the STARTING numbers, since KP is just starting. I am not saying KP is PM, just that they are similar at this point.
KP so far
87/127 771 yards 2 td 7 int

Peyton Manning first 4 games
91/136 1089 8 td 9 int

Sorry but I remember Peytons rookie season and yes he threw picks but he also pushed the ball down field and threw touchdowns. Every time KP throws deep it’s intercepted.

Blake Bortles
97/143 1004 yards 4 tds 7 ints

He’s not even Blake Bortles yet.

Mason Rudolph
83/130 897 yards 9 tds 3 ints

I’m not saying Pickett WON’T be good. Just he’s not there. If this is a throwaway season then keep him out there. We can see if where he is now improves every week. Otherwise, if you want to win I honestly put Rudolph out there. Sorry but anyone who knows anything about football saw he was the best of the three last summer. Everyone hates Rudolph but comparisons don’t lie. At the same age as Pickett he was way WAY better than him.

This is a throwaway offense to go with the season.

Nobody is going to excel in it. It's an amateur offense and easily defended. The only part that works is the 2 min offense that actually utilizes the entire field on a quick tempo. They actually started running this short crap before Canada got here and it melted down 12 games into the season. Canada took that trash and added his ridiculous ****.

They've neglected high picks on the lines for a long time. You'll pay for that when you face good defenses. They have zero blue chips on the OL and only Big Cam on the DL.

Najee and Bush should have been picks for the OL/DL.

The team is a rebuild project now. That's if the goal is actually compete for a championship and not get smashed in the playoffs.

They will sign him to a 3rd but more out of desperation than skill left.

Well, in fairness Tua's brains are closer to scrambled eggs than brains right now. I can't believe the moron is playing.

Well he did run headfirst on two of his running plays. The Steelers didn't smash him, which is bullshit.

If you're going to stick your chin out expect to get knocked out. Other teams won't be as nice.

I would throw the Freirmuth pick in too. Love the guy but the Steelers should have taken Darrisaw and Creed Humphries with #1 and 2 instead they waited to address the line until pick 3 and 4 taking Kendrick Green and Dan Moore. Now we have this disaster OL.

Kenny moved the ball down the field into the shadow of the end zone twice in three minutes
Yes the picks killed the game but if Triblewsky was back there it would have been three and out game over!

Unfortunately Kenny will be mediocre because of coaching, you need an offensive minded coach in today’s NFL

Oh how quickly we forget.

Steelers vs. Bills
Pickett - 52 pass attempts
Team - 17 rushing attempts
3 sacks
55 pass attempts to 17 rushing attempts

Steelers vs. Bucs
Pickett - 18 pass attempts
Team - 16 rushing attempts while Pickett was in (including 2 scrambles)
1 sack
21 passing plays to 14 running plays

Steelers vs. Dolphins
Pickett - 44 pass attempts
Team - 23 rushing attempts (including 3 scrambles)
2 sacks
49 passing plays to 20 rushing plays

Steelers treating Pickett like he's Ben Roethlisberger. They did the same thing with Mitch. I thought this was the entire reason they drafted Najee, so they could run the ball.

By comparison, in Zappe's three games for the Patriots:
*21 passing attempts + 4 combined sacks for Zappe (15 attempts, 3 sacks) vs. 33 runs
*21 passing attempts vs. 35 runs
*34 passing attempts + 2 sacks vs. 29 runs
This is something that I’ve noticed across the NFL. Teams are having success running the ball and they go away from it. Why? It’s like they’re impatient. Ironically, the Steelers benefited at times from this phenomenon when the defense was getting run over.

C’mon be objective, Pickett may be a franchise QB, but he certainly hasn’t proven that yet.

If the season ended today, Pickett would have a lower QB rating than Duck Hoges had.
Irrelevant. He has talent Duck did not. Kenny has been moving the sticks and keeping possession better than Mitch. He is a rookie he will struggle. Duck had no arm.

And Ryan Leaf had talent and an arm that Tom Brady and Drew Brees did not. So what? It takes more than talent to be a franchise NFL QB, Pickett needs to prove that he has that part.

Well all will be forgotten soon. The Steelers have the Eagles this week and they're going to mop the field with them.

It won't even be close. Our power running game and complex patterns working the middle of the field will be too much for the iggles to handle.

I almost feel bad for the eagle fans getting crushed like that at home.

We will spend the bye week elated and wondering how we could have ever doubted.....

;);)

College offenses score a lot of points. I'd say this is circa MT B school Jr. High.
College offenses score a lot of points against, ya know, other colleges. Against pros, not so much.

The Steelers lack good talent at the premium positions:

QB-rookie who is in a bad offensive system and has a terrible TD/INT ratio

WR-Pickens may be a star but he’s still a rookie.

LT-Moore is one of the worst tackles in the NFL

EDGE-best in the league with Watt

CB-pick your starter, Witherspoon and Wallace are below average starters

This season absolutely is a throw-away season. Let's not forget KP wasn't practicing with the 1's in the preseason. He didn't play with them in the preseason games. He was getting no No. 1 reps until after the Jets game. KP has plenty of arm to throw all over the field. This team isn't going to sniff .500 no matter who the QB is especially with Canaduh calling the plays. I just find it hard to believe that last year and this year with Mitch or KP, we have one good drive and then the play calling or whatever goes out the window and we are pretty much 3 and out (or close to it) for countless drives. Then when we need to score and go 2-minute style (as I'm still not sure Canaduh put the hurry-up O back in the system) to move the ball, we get in a rhythm and move right down the field. Shouldn't we be doing more of what gets us in a rhythm and moving down the field? The OL still sucks and 75% of Najee's runs he was/is met in the backfield when he gets the ball. He can't get in any rhythm. KP can't get in any rhythm. The season is done other than to watch some of the young guys hopefully improve. Then we must take OL, OL, DL with our 1st 3 picks (in no particular order).

He has already proven to have more heart than Ryan Leaf. Jesus the impatience and need for instant gratification is unbelievable.

There is so much wrong with this team that one draft won't fix it

3 valid high end starters in the HUGE need positions / trench / MLB / OLB ijn next two drafts would help but 4 of the six, need to be trench.

Well unless a lot changes we won’t have to worry about the playoffs for a while.
