On October 1, Stephen Paddock locked himself into a 32nd floor suite at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas and opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on the fairgrounds below.

In about 10 minutes, he unloaded more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, leaving 51 people dead and 851 others injured and bleeding. It was the worst mass shooting in U.S history and until this week, the motivation behind Paddock’s massacre remained unknown.

But on Wednesday, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released 1,200 pages of police reports, witness statements, and other evidence, for the first time shedding new light on the man responsible for the shooting.

Just days before the massacre, at least two people told police that a man they believed to be Paddock ranted to them about federal government efforts to impose gun control measures. Another witness recounted how a man thought to be Paddock shared his belief that a “camp” set up by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was in fact “a dry run for law enforcement and military to start kickin’ down doors and … confiscating guns.”

The widespread seizure of guns by the federal government — specifically through FEMA — is a popular conspiracy theory amongst extremist gun nuts, and one that was heavily promoted by the National Rifle Association.

On the 10th anniversary of Katrina’s landfall in New Orleans, an NRA article published in the Daily Caller vastly overstated the degree to which authorities were disarming gun owners during rescue and evacuation efforts in the city. Even other pro-gun groups criticized the NRA’s portrayal of the situation as inaccurate and overblown.

One of the Las Vegas witnesses recalled Paddock telling him that “somebody has to wake up the American public and get them to arm themselves,” during a conversation less than a month before the shooting. “Sometimes sacrifices have to be made.”

Others shared similarly unnerving encounters with the shooter. A woman overheard a man she later identified as Paddock talking belligerently about past anti-government standoffs in Waco, Texas and Ruby Ridge, Idaho, three days before the shooting. A Mandalay Bay housekeeper recalled how Paddock sat at a table and stared at her while she cleaned his room. And a man who rejected an offer from Paddock to modify his semi-automatic weapons to fire automatically said Paddock grew upset and launched into a tirade about gun control.

County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak told the Associated Press however, that law enforcement was able to establish no clear motive for the shooting.

The release of documents was the result of a court order, after the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department lost its fight to keep the documents sealed. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo sought to keep the documents secret because the investigation is still ongoing and he apologized to the public, stating that the release would “further traumatize a wounded community.”

Paddock was nuts. Ok, noted.

What a bunch of bullshit. You're such a ******* sucker. You can't really be that dumb to buy this crap now.

Yeah, the best way to keep the government from wanting to confiscate guns is to randomly shoot 100 innocent people. Makes a lot of sense. Not.

I'd like to read the actual witness testimony, not Think Progress's interpretation of what 3 people who heard "someone they believed to be Paddock" say.

And that is the problem with the media today. They use dubious references to anonymous sources and pass nonsense off as fact. Who can blame them? People lap it up like a dying man in the desert needing water. Someone they believed to be Paddock. What a load of bullocks.

Right..interesting how three random people who never met him overheard him talking about this stuff, but there is no report by anyone who actually knew him that he talked like this. No online evidence of it. Nothing concrete whatsoever.

Being that this massacre had taken place at a country music festival, its possible 51 Trump supporters may have been killed.....and that's a good thing, right Elfie?

Thats normal for an Elfie post.

there is not a single "fact" in that article....just a load of liberal bullshit trying to place blame on their typical whipping boys....

Think Progress isn't media, it's a Leftist blog.

My take is that since Paddock has little background and no one knew much about him is that there is a certain kind of individual with those characteristics and that is a government informant. I think he was there to set up a sting selling guns to the Muzzies, they figured it out and shot him, then fired on the crowd.

After interviewing several people, I spoke with two who report that a person they believe to be elfie, was overheard wishing to be able to eat a pile of former President Obama's turds. Others say a person fitting elfies description was seen blowing goats in a petting zoo while little children were watching.

my post is just as "journalistic" as the garbage posted above

Right because some old crazy guy didn't post it on Facebook for you, it can't be real...........the lack of critical thinking ability is just nothing short of stunning.

What part of that do you not understand? Is the Las Vegas police now some part of a left wing conspiracy......OH WAIT!.......YES some of you nuts think just like Paddock with the conspiracies...never mind.

Carry on, every one of your posts align perfectly. Thanks for playing.

If your Reich WIng baboon mind sees the Fox News logo will you then grunt and accept reality?

Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock ranted about FEMA camps, Waco before concert massacre, witnesses say

Elftard, will you please STOP trying to rewrite history you rambling moron.

From your beloved, Alt-LEFT SNOPES and from the shooter's very own BROTHER:

As of this writing, police, journalists, and the gunman’s family are still trying to figure out his motives. His brother, Eric, said that his sibling had no political or religious affiliations at all:

If you told me an asteroid fell into Earth, it would mean the same to me. There’s absolutely no sense, no reason he did this . . . He’s just a guy who played video poker and took cruises and ate burritos at Taco Bell. There’s no political affiliation that we know of. There’s no religious affiliation that we know of.

Your Fascist head is so warped, you overlooked in the Fox article that it says:

A jailed man who gave a statement to authorities in November said he encountered a man he believed was Stephen Paddock and who told him that Federal Emergency Management Agency “camps” setup after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were “a dry run for law enforcement and military to start kickin' down doors and...confiscating guns.”

Good lord, that's a hell of a source, someone in jail who thinks he might have met Stephen Paddock.

Then this gem from the article:

Separately, a woman wrote a handwritten account of her experience with Paddock, in which she said she heard him talk about armed standoffs. The woman reportedly overheard Paddock talking with another man at a Las Vegas restaurant three days before the shooting.

By god, since she wrote down what she heard, it must be true right? She's in a restaurant, this man is a stranger, she reportedly heard...

JFC, I'm about to write some facts. I reportedly saw someone who looked like Elftard at a Miami restaurant in Cheese Cake Factory clothes surround an African American while he was eating wearing a MAGA T-shirt. Just prior I reportedly overheard this employee talking about hating black Conservatives and people like Ben Carson and Clarence Thomas made Ze sick....

I wrote it, therefore it must be true!

That Fox article ends with:

The FBI and police have yet to declare a motive for the shooting, though officials have said previously that Paddock, a prolific gambler, was on a losing streak prior to the shooting.

The entire article is about a jailed person thinking he met Paddock and a woman in a restaurant thinking she was next to Paddock reportedly overhearing something.

You can't make up this level of stupidity. You are on a god damned roll Elfie!

nothing close to facts....witnesses are wrong all the time or they lie...."hands up don't shoot" comes to mind

continuing my investigation, a poster thought to be elfie was seen giving the liberal media a rimjob in the middle of Times Square

The Las Vegas police have also said they are unable to determine a motive. Far from your ridiculous over the top heading of "mystery solved" they are simply relaying some of the information they have gathered. The only ones drawing any sort of conclusion on motive from that vague and unsubstantiated information ("a man they believed to be Paddock") is Think Progress and you. Once again, there is not one person who actually knew Paddock who relayed any similar conversations. Did Paddock only share his pro-gun rantings with complete strangers, while keeping them off the internet and secret from everyone he knew? Does that not give you pause to question the accuracy of these witnesses' stories at all? Of course it doesn't.

Is it possible he was a pro-gun nut? Of course. Anything's possible. Is there any conclusive evidence he was a pro-gun nut? None whatsoever. That's what you call CRITICAL THINKING my friend. Not jumping to "mystery solved" on very thin accounts from people who didn't even know him. The police haven't done that, why have you? Because you so want it to be true.

This thread is very comical to me. A brother of his mother's sister's uncle from Nebraska thought that his aunt was really his mother's brother from his father's side that may have a heard a conversation from a man. Whew! Obviously, he committed mass murder. Case closed!

Another dumbass Elfie thread. No worthwhile substance, very little entertainment value. Yep, that about covers it.

The police can't state his motive because the perp didn't state it clearly. It's obvious though from the witness statements that ALL his comments to them were of a right wing/conspiracy nature. Notice there are NO conflicting statements.

If you want to play dumb have at it hoss.

Meanwhile the kid in the Sante Fe shooting had a bunch of pins on his jacket, one of them a communist hammer and sickle.

The Trumpists here immediately confirmed he was Antifa.............

He was probably wearing the different pins for fashion reasons, as many kids do. Paddocks statements were that of a grown man, and they DON'T conflict.

That's how you school people with deductive logic and the facts son.

More Thinkprogress fiction.

t's obvious though from the witness statements that ALL his comments to them were of a right wing/conspiracy nature. Notice there are NO conflicting statements.

Good Lord we have destroyed this part your AltLeft article and Fox's article. "Witnesses" who "think" it was Paddock, one of which was in JAIL, another who was in a restaurant and may have overheard someone they thought was Paddock gave written statements about something they think they heard this man say that might have sort of been someone that resembled Paddock.

As OFTB pointed out, NO ONE WHO KNEW THE MAN OR WAS RELATED TO HIM ever heard him say anything at all like this.

You cannot make this **** up. Wait that's exactly what you are doing. The extremes you go to make inane points is breathtaking at times.

Good lord...can you NOT READ? We don't even know if these comments were actually made by him! We don't know if the witnesses are credible. Did you know there are several witnesses who claimed to have seen him with his girlfriend that weekend, even though it's been determined that she was in the Philippines? And that another witness claimed she picked up Paddock and a woman at the airport, even though he didn't fly to Las Vegas, he drove?

This is the woman's statement you mentioned, who claimed she saw him talking to someone at Denny's.

"I thought one man looked like the actor Clancey Brown. This morning I realize it was Steven (sic) Paddock," she wrote. "They were talking about Waco and 'Ruby Ridge.' I thought they were talking about a woman. However, I have since google 'Ruby Ridge.'"

Well gee, that sure sounds reliable! If you went into a court of law with this you'd be laughed right out.

You say "there are no conflicting statements", do you know that for a fact? Have you read the whole report? Or are you just taking Think Progress' word for that?

Like I said, anything is possible. Of course there are violent people motivated by right wing ideology, just like any ideology. No one is disputing that.

Your approaching this like it's some kind of definitive proof of anything is just making you look even stupider than usual. Police have not been able to determine a motive because there's no reliable evidence of a motive.
