Tariffs

We didn't need tariffs in the 50's because post-WWII we were the economic gorilla in the house. Nor did we have tons of regulations increasing the cost of doing business. In 1960 imported vehicles made up about 5% of the US automobile market.
If we go back to 1950's standards on environment, labor, and crash protection, then we can get there. I'm all in favor of that.
Isn’t the theory behind Trump’s tariffs that the U.S. is the economic gorilla and can use tariffs as leverage? Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Kia, Hyundai and Volkswagen didn’t have U.S. plants in 1960 either.

We're the economic gorilla but not the manufacturing gorilla. I'd prefer we got back to that. We're too dependent on nations that don't like us (China and the Mid East).

We should have learned how vulnerable we are from the COVID fiasco. It'll take getting totally cut off before we as a country learn that we need to be self sufficient and by that time, it'll likely be too late. How do you rebuild manufacturing if you have no resources? It's not like we can go in and just fire up all the old long dead factories and start pumping out finished goods.

So are they a bargaining chip that are abandoned if other countries play nice? Or are they intended to bring manufacturing back to the US, in which case they have to stay in place?

I would hope "Made in America" enjoys a healthy resurgence. We have far too much of what we depend on produced or maintained in China and India.

It isn't realistic to think that manufacturing this country saw in the 50's and 60's will return, but I would hope products connected to our overall security would return.

Computer chips and medication come to mind.

those are the two that need to come back

Where I live most of the steel mills and factories have been leveled. Most towns have at least one former school building that's been turned into senior citizen apartments. Ain't any school overcrowding here.

Quality foods for all, domestically produced.

Manufacturing doesnt have to fully return to the US, but some critical stuff should be locally controlled... lots of other stuff should be reasonably close, like Mexico or Canada... you absolutely dont want to depend on overseas shipping of critical components..

Also China should have a 1000% Tariff until their human rights and environmental policies remotely resemble a civilized country... people ***** about US civil rights issues and petty environmental dipshittery but bow down the China, who are totalitarian douchebags, environmentally horrible, and treat their people like disposable garbage...

My federal taxes support the poor **** hole red states.

Nope. Tariffs are a tax that get passed on to consumers. **** is going to become less affordable.

I was having a debate about what states perpetually have horrible deficits... its just fact that Blue states are way further in the hole than Red states... I mean total debt, per capita debt, longterm debt... the red states just outperform the Blue ones... its no secret... Blue states are bad with money and even with far higher taxes and often huge populations, cannot actually get their programs to work in a fiscally responsibly way...

California is gifted around 40-50 billion dollars in tax revenue from the pacific coast ports, and has the highest tax rates in the country with a huge population, yet has a half trillion dollar debt bill, insufficient infrastructure, and collapsing social programs.

New york and Illinois arent in any better shape...

Federal dollars prop up blue states... not red ones

Instead of leaving people the hell alone, these blue states come up with social programs like "Meat Tenderizers for Hammersexuals" and budget to use 10% of the spending bill on purchasing cheap hammers from China and pocket the rest for self-enrichment driving the deficit deeper into oblivion whilst enabling Coolie's unhealthy obsession of beating his meat.

This would seem to indicate that the Administration is not in sync with existing American law on International Trade.

Are these some crazy judges, or does Congress actually bear responsibility for American trade relations and tariffs?
All of the above.
1. Trump is likely doing things that may be overstepping his boundaries, but since Congress has allowed the last number of Presidents to do Congress’s job, they kind of signed off on it.
2. Congress has been derelict in their duties for way too long and should be forced to do their jobs or go to jail.
3. Activist Judges have also been allowed to do what they want instead of what their actual jobs are. I think Congress needs to limit how long Judges can serve at each level.

Both. A lot of people in Congress from both parties are on the take from foreign governments and NGO's.

hang them all
That's a little harsh but I'd say term limits, no pensions, no stock ownership for Congress and their immediate families, all 535 members get audited by the IRS every year, and a balanced budget amendment. And pass the REINS Act which would require a vote in Congress to approve any regulation with a cost over $100 million.
