There aren't gas shortages, there is a distribution issue due to pipelines of private companies that were hacked. Hopefully those companies can get things sorted out, much like the Texas 'privatized' power grid which failed miserably during the winter storm earlier this year. Woefully underprepared and incompetent, as they stick it to 'big gov' and tell them to get out of their lives.

What's happening now with all the hoarding of gas, similar to toilet paper last year, is simply dumbassery of the highest order. Nobody - Republican or Democrat - sitting in Washington DC is gonna help these folks.

Randsomware and international criminal hacking operations are a real thing. They shut down the UK health services for a few weeks a while back. Someone better figure out how to handle this. I thought you guys hated big government and the idea the federal government should have a role in our lives. Consequently, your anger should be directed at the people running the Colonial Pipeline Co. for not having an answer to their cyber hacking problem.

Four days into the crisis, Colonial Pipeline Co. has only managed to manually operate a small segment of the pipeline — as a stopgap measure — and doesn’t expect to be able to substantially restore service before the weekend. The risk is that by that point drivers or airlines may already be suffering severe fuel shortages, while refineries on the Gulf coast could be forced to idle operations because they have nowhere to put their product.

On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation pointed the finger at a ransomware gang known as DarkSide. While cyberattacks are increasingly used around the world as a weapon against geopolitical rivals, there was no indication that the current crisis could boil over internationally. President Joe Biden stopped short of blaming the Kremlin for the attack, despite some evidence that the hackers or the software they used are “in Russia.”

Colonial Chief Executive Officer Joe Blount and a top lieutenant assured Deputy Energy Secretary David Turk and state-level officials that the company has complete operational control of the pipeline and won’t restart shipments until the ransomware has been neutralized.

Government officials haven’t advised Colonial on whether it ought to pay the ransom, Deputy National Security Adviser for Cyber and Emerging Technologies Anne Neuberger said during a briefing.

You know, when they moved the US embassy to Jerusalem, got a few Arab countries to sign a cursory peace deal with Israel, sent a message to the Palestinians and the world that the US was overturning decades of negotiations on a two-state solution and will no longer be a trusted broker on a negotiated settlement. When Trump just said **** it, let's go all-in with Israel. That solved the problem once and for all, at least that's how it was characterized here on the board. What the **** happened?

It's not even a distribution issue. Just like you said, it is panic buying. It is going to work itself out. If people would just stick to their routines, there wouldn't be a problem, or it would be on a much smaller scale. The worst thing Governor Cooper could have done was announce a state of emergency. About 14 seconds later, there were lines a mile long at every gas station between where I live and where I work, and there is currently no gas at any of them. Last I heard, 71% of gas stations in NC had no gas. Saw a guy with 6 55 gallon drums at the pump yesterday. No wonder they are emptying out.

You understand the deal Kushner brokered was completely separate from the Palestinians, right?

And beyond that, the fact that there have been DECADES of negotiations with no solution tells me that whatever the US had done over those decades was ineffective at best. There is no peaceful solution in the middle east. Like many cultures before them, their religion has been bastardized as an excuse for violence. There will never be peace with people that choose to continue to live in the 7th century.

Service stations just need to enforce the law of no filling of fuel into unauthorized containers like they should, and that might solve 3/4 of the problem.
