TJ Watt

Yep.

And I admit to being concerned about the 2010-2011 drafts. Wondered if Tombert were declining in player evaluation.

Last 2 drafts? Yeah, son, how about:

Artie Burns
Sean Davis
Javon Hargrave
Jerald Hawkins
Tyler Matakevich

TJ Watt
JuJu Smith-Schuster
Cam Sutton
James Conner

Pretty freaking good.

They've absolutely nailed the last two drafts.

Save for a couple of slip ups in round 1, they've been consistent with early round picks. We've had a couple of disappointments but they restocked the talent level very quickly the last two drafts. The hardest task will be finding a new franchise QB to replace Big Ben, because that's not far from reality.

What you posted contradicts itself.. that's all I was saying.

Point taken! I’ll just leave it as a lack of confidence in what Tomlin will replace a legend with. We do know that player currently does not exist on this current roster. We shall see!

In most cases to get or replace a Franchise QB you have to make a significant investment. They havent done that under Tomlin..no need too. We shall see soon though. Unless we get extremely lucky and Dobbs develops..landry Jones IMO is a good back up. Someone who can give you a chance in a game or two

No they haven't. Add that to my list.

Why should they have?? There was never a Aaron Rogers type of scenario for the Steelers. A guy who fell in the draft and was available late in the first round.

TJ Watt has and is a GREAT player / person. I'm glad we got him and he hasn't disappointed one bit.

Watt is 10x the player and person I thought of him heading into the draft. I was worried he'd have difficulty holding the edge, looked at him (obviously incorrectly) as a somewhat unathletic player who was riding his brother's coattails. I viewed him (again, incorrectly) as a flash in the pan, big name type guy, someone surely we wouldn't draft in the first round. I was wrong on all counts. TJ is a super cool dude, incredible work ethic, plenty athletic enough to play OLB and sharp as a tack. Never been happier to be so wrong about a draft pick.

The teams future success will depend primarily on who they bring in here to succeed Ben, period. I’m not real confidant on who Tomlin would see as a Ben successor.

You would think with the talent the Steelers have amassed, the likes of Rogers, Cousins and Manning would be having their agents camped outside Colberts office?

Why? Er, because Ben keeps threatening to retire and we don't even have a backup who can win games? This situation didn't exactly sneak up on us.

Reaching.

I don't have to reach, because the Steelers haven't had to reach to find a franchise QB yet. Just developing backups and bringing in vet backups. Batch and Lefty were good backups, but you don't mention them?

And again since he been threatening what QB have passed up on in the first round.

If for instance the Steelers had traded multiple draft picks to trade up for QB..we miss out on some good picks in the last two drafts.

I think this will be Ben’s last season, win or lose. I think he’s had enough and certainly has made enough and now wants to enjoy those little ones growing up and not risk jury.
The list you have there is impressive especially Rogers but no way he’s available. Aside from Ben there is no QB on this present roster that can step in. Jones at very best will always be a backup and Dobbs just does not strike me as a starter. Backup at best!
If Ben in fact does retire then I would be on the phone with agents for Manning if released and Cousins if not signed. If for some miracle Rogers was there then you have to make that happen but I just don’t see him being a F/A.

Mine is based on Dixon, Landry, and Vick.

Brain St. Pierre, Omar Jacobs, the list goes on and on....wait those weren't Tomlin's picks, they were Cowher's. So clearly later round QBs here don't have good track record regardless of the head coach. This is not a proper way to judge drafting QBs, and if it weren't for Rooney telling Cowher to take Roethlisberger we still wouldn't have him when he fell into our laps, we got lucky with Ben and that had nothing to do with who was head coach

2016:

Artie Burns - Good pick, he can play, but better than X. Howard plus the draft picks via trade down?
Sean Davis - More of a 3rd safety who starts and gives up way too much.
Javon Hargrave - Doesn't play the majority of snaps, a good role player, more of a 3 technique DT, not a pure NT
Jerald Hawkins - Hardly dresses for games
Tyler Matakevich - A back up. The 43-53rd man on the roster. Decent on Special teams

2017:

TJ Watt - One of the best rookies in the NFL!
JuJu Smith-Schuster - Has a real future, perhaps as a pro bowl player
Cam Sutton - A good looking nickel and dime DB.
James Conner - Injury prone, but he can play

2017 > 2016.

If you net two Starters from a draft it is solid. We know how you feel about Davis Coach. Hell there are some Inuit just North of where I live that know how you feel about him. But I count 5 starters and at least three solid role guys in your list. Pretty good.

Davis is a starter, but I tend to agree with Coach in that I do not think he is a particularly good one.

He and Mike Mitchell are basically clones in that they're both fast and physical, but do not seem to offer much else.

Not everyone is a star. He makes some plays. Everyone misses. But he has range. I guarentee the Steelers dont think the way you and coach do. Though he was out matched at the end they felt he was the best player against Gronk.

And leaving him alone on Gronkowski all game did not work out well at all. The Steelers seem to think he's better than he is, which can be an issue in itself when it comes to game planning and whatnot.

Gronkowski is almost impossible to cover, but Davis had an opportunity to break up two or three of those passes and he just couldn't do it.

The guy seriously lacks cover and ball skills.

I saw an article in one of the Pittsburgh outlets in response to the criticism Davis has taken for getting abused by Gronk. It pointed out another Steeler player several years ago who they tried to match up one on one with Gronk with lousy results. The Steeler in that game wore #43 and is going into the HOF on his first ballot.

Was that the 2013 game where Polamalu was about two years removed from his prime?

Agreed. When it was clear that it was Gronk all tge way it should have been Watt or Dupree with a bracket of Davis over top. Look I can criticize a receiver that drops the ball. A left tackle that cant pass block well enough. A DE that never gets home but safety play from a side angle tv shot. I dont know. Im critical of Mitchell but I suspect if I saw the all 22 angle and really knew his responsibility I might see it different.
