Tomlin says Coaching/Defensive Starter changes could be coming

Realistically, what changes can he make at this point that improve the team? Sure, he could bench some starters, for all the good that will do. As far as coaching, everyone knows that if either coordinator was to be fired, they’ll promote from within, and that cupboard is pretty bare. Sure, Flores is on staff, but do you think he will given free rein? I have my doubts about that.

The only change that might bear fruit is firing Mike Tomlin. I think he is a decent coach and a good man, but his fingerprints are all over every aspect of this team and it isn’t good. Hasn’t been good for a while. His schemes and concepts are weak and dated on both sides of the ball, and they are getting exposed by good and bad teams alike. Execution is a component of it, but in most cases the players aren’t being set up for success from the jump.

I think most people figured the Steelers would struggle at times this year, but doubt anyone thought it would get this bad so quickly.

I honestly believe the Steelers are more talented than they have shown. Scheme is what is holding them back more than anything. Look at other teams around the league and several are doing more with less, the Giants being an example of that.

I think Tomlin would do well to move out of the way and let his coaches coach. I can’t see how it would be much worse.

Look, the reality is Tomlin isn’t going to get fired-even be on the hot seat. But- he should feel pressure. He is going to get at least 2 years to see how things rebuild.
He should fire Teryl Austin first. The defense has been highly disappointing since the Bengals win-regardless if Watt is in or out. The other guys on the D side of the ball are all on scholarship too. The only in-house move I would make to promote to temporary Defensive Coordinator would be Florez if he’s willing to do it with stipulation-Tomlin keeps his fingers out.
If this helps balance the ship- I wouldn’t make a move in Canada until after the season is finished. Yeah, his play calling has no rhyme or reason-but as far as Pickett is concerned-don’t make him do a crash course on a whole new system midseason.
However, if it is a move that is made, reach out to folks like Sean Payton, pay attention to see if Josh McDaniels gets fired in Vegas (ok after the season move), give Todd Haley a call, see what Ken Whisenhunt is up to, is Mike Mularkey up to anything lately? Bring one of those guys in midseason to get you through.
We all were concerned about the offensive line being a problem, Pat Meyer delivered so far. He is safe they are not the Hogs but they are playing soundly and better than we expected.

Personnel moves-Pickens becomes WR1. Start looking more at Boykin or Sims over Dionte. Yes, he runs great routes, but he doesn’t finish. Warren needs more carries.
Bush needs bumped down the depth chart and might as well bring in Robinson. Continue to work Leal at Watt’s spot, they could be onto something because Highsmith is going to want paid, I see that a Watt/Leal combination could be something to be reckoned with in the future.
This week would be make or break for Harvin. He has a great leg and can be accurate but not consistent. Yes, the wind did knock a punt down yesterday, but overall- inconsistent. Move him to PS and call up Berry. They kept the wrong punter last year.

One thing the giants have is a first round running back that can be a game changer..
That is huge!

Payton is not taking an OC job. However, talk about a perfect coach to usher in a new QB. Tomlin isn’t going anywhere but this is a guy who I’d target.

I would see if he would be willing to come in as an offensive consultant if they keep Canada on board till the end (hey, if Trubisky or Rudy were the quarterback I wouldn’t let Canada on the same plane after the game). But a rookie QB with a ton of upside is a different story. Perhaps he would be willing to come in for the rest of the year at that role

The only scapegoat coaching change Tomlin and Rooney have the balls to make in-season is special teams. Tomlin obviously isn't going anywhere until he wants to and I just don't see them having the balls to do anything with Canaduh until maybe after the season, if then.

Steelers need to stop messing around and Hire Frank Cignetti as the new OC, He is already in Pittsburgh, runs a pro-style offense at Pitt, was an NFL QB coach and a damn good one at that with the Rams, and he would be perfect to coach up Pickett during these key developmental years in the NFL.

Just ******* do it Omar!!! And while you're at it, tell MT to keep his hands off of the Offense.

You can do a lot right now. They won't but should. You can hire a OC and bring him in. You can hand the D over to Flores, which they should do at a minimum.

The team is too worried about hurting someones feelings outside of players to do it, but it can be done. Other teams have done it during the season but this team being slow on the draw in just about everything they do is their Achilles heel. Slow to make player and coach decisions before, during, and after the games.

Consistently substandard standard.

Bingo! Couldn’t agree more with this Slash.
They should be in panic mode and if it takes firing both Austin and Canada and replacing them with Brian Flores and Sullivan then do it.
The fans are restless and it’s going to start showing with attendance.

No it isn’t. Pittsburgh fans still go to Pirates games. You honestly think they won’t fill up that stadium with a 20 year waiting list for season tickets? Plenty of lemmings will continue lining the Rooney’s pockets. Nothing is gonna change in that regard.

No way do I make Sullivan the OC. Guy wasn’t very good at his stop as OC. That’s the problem with the Steelers. Most of that coaching staff is a collection of castoffs that sucked at their last NFL job. Flores is one of the few exceptions.

The only pressure Tomlin feels is losing his precious “never a losing season” streak.

Yes and no. To finish out the year, you need someone to call the plays and then hire out once the season is over. If they fire Canada midseason- this is a good possibility and realistic one. You need to do what is possibly the best for your rookie QB.

I think it’s moot. I doubt they’ll fire anyone.

No I think there will be plenty of no shows if they continue to slide. If they are 1-7 after the bye week watch how many no shows against the Saints in November.
Fans buy season tickets, I was one of them and when they play badly the interest fades and fans simply don’t show up.
We’ll see what happens but should be interesting to see if that’s the case if they continue to lose.

They may not show up, but if the tickets are already paid for I doubt the Rooney’s give a ****.

Well Art better start paying attention. You are correct, the tickets are already paid for but man you lose a lot on concessions and paraphernalia with folks stating home.

So you changed your mind about Canada?
