Did you express your objections at the time?
Dude, you have no idea to what extent I've opposed the Soviet Union, and subsequently the post-Soviet Union and Putin's power grab, which has included murdering journalists, inserting a network of nepotism & cronyism, attacking neighbors like Georgia and Ukraine, threatening NATO and the West, exerting influence on Central European countries such as Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. I'll put it simply, I've done so from the very beginning. I've done so relentlessly and unequivocally. The fact Trump and this new, bizarre breed of post-conservative, no-longer-conservative, so-called conservatives bed down with Putin bothers me more than anything. So you can take your sniveling, belly-aching bullshit elsewhere.
What you write makes sense and sounds great in theory. Problem is, you yourself have a higher intellect and know more about foreign affairs than Trump does. You are inserting your own angle into what you think he's talking about. I'd vote for you for president based on your knowledge of world affairs - without knowing the first thing about you personally - before I voted for Trump. He is like a little kid that sees the shiny wrapping on a xmas present and loses his mind. Putin said a few nice things about him and he's since gone full bromance with the guy. Trump doesn't understand the first thing about Russia's (or China's) global influence or intentions. Trump is either ignorant of Putin's transgressions, or simply ignores them. Trump didn't seem to realize Russia crossed into Crimea last year and attacked a sovereign Ukraine. So again, you're putting your own, intellectual spin on Trump's pro-Russian position. It has no bearing on what little Trump actually understands of this, and most other, geopolitical situations. You have to understand that Trump is all ego. Putin is playing him like a fiddle. Trump simply adores the idea a world leader has come out in support of his candidacy. As quickly as he's fallen for Putin's flirtation (as a former KGB chief, he knows exactly what he's doing), he can also turn on him the second there's a misunderstanding or a percieved slight. Then where will we be? This is the volatility, unpredictablity that can be so dangerous. We simply cannot have someone like this as Commander in Chief, regardless of what damaged goods Hillary may be.It is not "bedding down with Putin".
“Look, I have tremendous policy disagreements with President Obama, but Vladimir Putin is an authoritarian thug who is accountable to no one,” Rubio told the Guardian.
“I don’t think what Vladimir Putin exhibits is leadership. I think what he exhibits is thuggery … and we should be clear-eyed about that,” he added, noting that Putin controlled the media, the military and often his political opponents were either imprisoned or found dead.
Asked by the Guardian if he was concerned that Trump had a penchant for commending Putin, despite those facts, Rubio said he was hopeful the candidate’s posture might evolve.
“My sense is those views will probably change once he understands better who Vladimir Putin truly is – that’s my hope,” responded the senator, who is backing Trump.
“I think I would urge caution,” Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said at an event hosted by the Atlantic on Thursday, a day after Donald Trump refused to back down from his compliments to the Russian leader.
“The idea that Russia is somehow a friend of ours, or that Putin is a friend, is a false narrative.”
“They’re not our friends.”
McCaul’s comments reflect a wide unease within the Republican Party about Trump’s insistent and seemingly unprecedented praise for Putin, a man usually treated as a pariah in U.S. politics.
“Putin wants the United States to be taken up with its own problems, and forget about things like Ukraine and Crimea,” Sergei Parkhomenko, an activist and broadcaster for Echo of Moscow, told me. “It seems to him that, if the United States elects Trump, all of America will be taken up for at least a year trying to ‘digest’ him.
“But there is a second reason,” Parkhomenko continued. “Putin is convinced that absolutely everything in this world is done for money. He is a religious fanatic, and money is his god. With money, it is possible to solve any problem, buy any interlocutor. He bought the Olympic Games, he bought the World Cup. It will be easy to deal with Trump. He won’t need to use words in negotiations, only figures. When they don’t agree, it will only be necessary to find the right price.”
Vladimir Putin is a cunning and cynical reader of his adversaries. He notices that Trump does not know the difference between the Quds Force and the Kurds, or what the “nuclear triad” is; that his analysis of Brexit was based in part on what might be good for his golf courses in Britain; that his knowledge of world affairs is roughly that of someone who subscribes to a daily newspaper but doesn’t always have time to get to it. Overwhelmed with his own problems at home, Putin sees the ready benefit in having the United States led by an unlettered narcissist who believes that geostrategic questions are as easy to resolve as a real-estate closing. Putin knows a chump when he sees one.
Look, anybody who thinks Putin has any interest in helping the United States is crazy. Putin is former KGB - the guys paid a lot of money to spy on the United States and do it harm.
I don't know how Trump views Russia and Putin. He seems to want a better relationship, granted, but at what cost and to what end?
Finally, I acknowledge the very credible reasons to be suspicious of Russia and be dubious of any claims that Russia makes as to deals with the United States. So can I ask ...
Why are not the same doubts raised as to Iran, which makes no bones about its animosity towards the United States???
Spike - and your band of merry men
Steeltime, I'm not making this **** up or pulling it out of a hat.Tibs, Trump has plenty of issues that can be discussed, but for the love of ****, stop comparing him to Hitler. Just stop. Your seemingly endless references to the KKK and Nazis is just lazy, and shallow, and asinine.
The number of white nationalists and self-identified Nazi sympathisers on Twitter have multiplied more than 600 per cent in the last four years, outperforming the so-called Islamic State (Isis) in everything from follower counts to number of daily tweets, a new study found.
Researchers at George Washington University’s Programme on Extremism analysed 18 accounts belonging to major white nationalist groups and organisations – such as the American Nazi Party and the National Socialist Movement – mostly located in the US.
These accounts saw a sharp increase in followers, from about 3,500 in 2012 to 22,000 in 2016. The study notes that while Isis stood out for its outreach and recruitment using Twitter since the group’s emergence a few years ago, white nationalist groups have excelled in the medium.
The report underscores the declining influence of Isis on the social media platform as Twitter continues to crackdown on the Islamist militant group. In August, the company said that it shut down roughly 360,000 accounts for what they saw as promoting terrorism.
Yet, the GWU study said that white nationalists are using the site with “relative impunity”.
“On Twitter, Isis' preferred social platform, American white nationalist movements have seen their followers grow by more than 600 per cent since 2012,” the study, authored by JM Berger, stated. “Today, they outperform Isis in nearly every social metric, from follower counts to tweets per day.”
When questioned about the report, a representative for Twitter referred Reuters to their terms of service that prohibit “hateful conduct”.
Donald Trump is a prominent subject among white nationalists on Twitter. According to the study, white nationalist users are “heavily invested” in the Republican’s candidacy. Tweets mentioned Mr Trump more than other popular topics among the groups.
Republican candidate has emerged as a favourite of white supremacist leaders, such as former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke, due in part to his hard-line stance against immigration from Mexico and his proposals to prohibit immigration of Muslims from countries like Syria and Afghanistan.
But mentions of Mr Trump and the use of Trump-related hashtags were second only talk of the “white genocide” – the belief that the influx of non-white cultures and increasing diversity in the US are fuelling the extinction of the “white race”.
“Social media activists tweeted hundreds of times per day using repetitive hashtags and slogans associated with this trope,” the study said.
Another finding indicated that racist violence connected to the white nationalist movement – such as Dylann Roof, who shot and killed nine black people inside the Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina – has “increasingly been tied to online activity”.
Who's running around proclaiming their love and admiration for Iran and its leaders? There are plenty of doubts firmly entrenched regarding Iran, Syria et al. If you're referring to the international nuke agreement, again, it's better to have that in place than no deal at all. I don't think anyone is taking Iran lightly at this point. God forbid one of the ayatollahs starts praising Trump, then we'll have another love affair with a hostile country to deal with. Why are not the same doubts raised as to Iran, which makes no bones about its animosity towards the United States???

Who is belly-aching and sniveling? "Nobody more than me has opposed the Soviet Union, and blah, blah." You sound like one of these politicians. It's pretty obvious I struck a nerve. There is a damn good probability that you had no objections then because of political expediency. So don't get your panties in a bunch now.

Story Highlights
- Standard of Living Index has risen overall since 2009
- Views of current standard of living have improved
- Views of standard of living as "getting better" have risen more sharply
This is the fifth article in a five-part series examining changes in Americans' health and well-being during Barack Obama's presidency.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' ratings of their standard of living have increased since President Barack Obama took office in 2009, with the Gallup Standard of Living Index rising steadily for the past 7 ½ years.
When Obama entered the White House, the United States was in the midst of the Great Recession, which damaged the housing market, left many Americans out of work and caused the U.S. gross domestic product to plummet. For 2009, the Gallup Standard of Living Index averaged +26, little better than the +24 found in 2008. It has edged up in most years since then, and for the first seven months of 2016, it averaged +50.
Gallup's Standard of Living Index is a composite of Americans' responses to two questions: one asking U.S. adults whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied with their standard of living, and the other asking whether their standard of living is getting better or worse. The index has a theoretical maximum of 100 (if all respondents say they are satisfied with their standard of living and say it is getting better) and a theoretical minimum of -100 (if all respondents are dissatisfied with their standard of living and say it is getting worse).
Satisfaction With Current Standard of Living Has Increased Steadily
Americans have been largely satisfied with their current standard of living over the past eight years, even during the depths of the recession. At the beginning of the Obama presidency, 73% of Americans said they were satisfied with their current standard of living. By 2015, that figure had risen to 79%, and it is 80% so far in 2016.
Future Expectations Have Risen More Sharply During Obama Years
Americans' expectations for their standard of living going forward have changed more significantly over the past eight years than their assessments of their current standard of living. In 2009, 42% of Americans said their standard of living was getting better, while nearly the same percentage, 40%, said it was getting worse. The percentage saying their standard of living is getting better has climbed steadily for the past 7 ½ years, amid battles over the federal budget and sequestration. In 2012, the percentage rose to 50%, and more recently, it moved into the 60% range. This range has held constant thus far in 2016.
Standard of Living Ratings Rise Across Income Groups
Americans' evaluations of their standard of living have improved significantly across all income groups during the Obama era. The improvement is similar across all groups, even though those with lower incomes have lower Standard of Living Index scores than those with higher incomes.

Bottom Line
Standard of living is a chief component of a person's financial well-being. Though Americans' views of the U.S. economy are now more negative than positive after having been slightly positive for part of 2014 and 2015, their assessments of their personal standard of living have always been positive and have improved during Obama's presidency.
The increase in perceived standard of living over the past seven-plus years reflects in large part the low starting point when Obama took office during the aftermath of a crippling recession. Since 2009, Americans' belief that their standard of living is getting better has increased steadily, as has been the case with other economic indicators such as job creation, and this is true across all income groups.
Financial well-being is about more than just income. It also reflects Americans' ability to manage their money to reduce financial stress. Those with lower incomes who manage their finances effectively could weather storms caused by a global recession. Yet even if there is another recession, it is possible that Gallup's Standard of Living Index will not dip considerably, especially the percentage who are satisfied with their current standard of living.
These data are available in Gallup Analytics.
