Prime Minister Scott Morrison pulls off Australian election 'miracle'

SYDNEY - Australia’s ruling Coalition won a spectacular victory in a federal election after voters backed its economic record and roundly rejected Labor’s ambitious agenda to overhaul taxes and tackle climate change.

Despite opinion surveys consistently showing that the Liberal-National Coalition was set to lose, Prime Minister Scott Morrison pulled off the upset with a disciplined campaign that squarely focused on the economy and on voter concerns about Labor leader Bill Shorten.

Appearing jubilant alongside his wife and two daughters, Mr Morrison, a devout Christian, announced victory by declaring: “I have always believed in miracles.”

Flanked by his wife and daughters, Prime Minister Morrison dedicated his surprise victory to the "quiet Australians."

"It's Australians who have worked hard, started a business, started a family, bought a home," he said to loud cheers.

"These are the quiet Australians who have won a great victory tonight."

That's pretty much something a Liberal would bank on a Conservative saying, and then use it to prop up the idea that all Conservatives are hateful bigots. Just my opinion but I think not reinforcing their opinions and stereotypes would be much more constructive as an argument.

I was just coming to post this. After being told how EVERYONE but evil American Republicans and conservatives believe climate change and progressive taxes are the most important voting item, seems like results over polls again.

Despite trailing in most opinion polls for years, Scott Morrison’s Liberal-National coalition closed down the gap with a relentless attack on Labor’s pledge to take tougher action on climate change and strip tax perks from wealthy Australians. For Labor leader Bill Shorten, the loss is akin to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 failure to win the U.S. presidency.

Its the same here, climate polls always show a majority in favor of DOING SOMETHING

Actually, when it comes to use of the term liberal, the rest of the world has it backwards. As DBS said the people who are generally referred to as liberals are really socialists. The liberalism from which the Australian Liberal party gets its name, is about personal freedoms (as long as your exercise of your personal freedoms doesn't infringe on others personal freedoms), small government (low taxes and fiscal conservatism) and PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY (which is sadly lacking in the current "liberal" philosophy). Although our Liberal Party have some not so liberal social policies (eg gun laws), fiscally they are definitely liberal.

The Liberal party shares little with the modern day "liberals" who believe in high taxes, and policing thoughts, speech and beliefs through vilification and even incarceration of people who disagree with the prevailing socialist agenda. The Liberal Party has had the name since 1944 (its foundations were steeped in opposition to communism and socialism), back before use of words started getting butchered by leftists trying to portray themselves as something they're not (the terms Social Democracy and Democratic Republic also being popular with the left).
