Trump's call to a Gold Star Widow

This is very near and dear to me. Until you have looked that widow in the eye and seen her pain, which I can't possibly imagine, you can't understand. I hope this isn't true. I really do. But I have my doubts, based on history and track record. Wouldn't be the first Gold Star Family he insulted.

The person reporting this (congresswoman from Florida) is one of Trump's staunchest opponents. She's a leader in the Impeach Trump movement. I've read that the widow doesn't really remember what Trump said to her, AND that all conversations are done in private. If so, then the media is running with a hearsay story out of the mouth of a moonbat Anti-Trumper.

I doubt they would just make up the accusation and what would they stand to gain?

Five time deferment Donald has shown he thinks he is above the military and it’s members and is quick to condescend, this is just the most recent example.

That could very well be the case. I hope it is. Widow's mom says it is what the President said, and I find it difficult to believe that mom or daughter would go for political points with Trump while the daughter is crying over the casket of her dead husband. I agree that people are shallow these days, but surely they aren't THAT shallow, are they?

I mean what the President said isn't wrong. We all know what we signed up for. But you don't SAY it to the dead Soldier's spouse.

It sounds like something he would say, but I'd hope he wasn't so insensitive to say such a thing to a grieving widow. Yea, it may be the truth, but there's a time and place for that talk. If he did say it, shame on him. If he didn't, what the fortification is she thinking to make that up?

He is being accused of something pretty bad. I am sure you are all aware. Of course he is denying it. But it seems the widow herself confirms he said it. I hope it isn't true. That is not how you console a grieving widow. Very insensitive. At best.

There is no doubt he said these things Sarge. We have the mother of the widow verifying what the congresswoman claims. This is par for the course when it come to The Scumbag in Chief.

At least you have the decency to point out how despicable this man is, unlike the other Trump supporters here who would swing from his sack even if he clubbed their own mothers to death. It took him almost two weeks to make the call and only because he was pushed.

You can CLEARLY tell he was bothered by even having to do it: " WHY DO I have to waste my t.v. or golfing time doing this when these guys know they can be hurt or killed when they sign up?"

And that is because with Trump IT"S ALL ABOUT TRUMP, ALL THE TIME. He doesn't care about the country, doesn't care about the average Joe, doesn't care about the military....just doesn't.

You can ask this widow, or the people of Puerto Rico, some of whom are drinking water from EPA superfund sites as we speak.....and in both those cases the source of it is his narcissm but above everything, his racism.

The "man" cares about no one, but himself and his family.

no doubt? Are you assuming he surly said this? Coming from you, he would cure cancer and you would find fault with it. This post proved your biased venom toward him, so your thoughts are void. Of course, you would take this woman's side of it without hearing from the widow, to make an educated opinion on this. Piling on is fun without all the facts. Like I said, if he said it, he needs to apologize. If he didn't, she's a scumbag and needs repomanded.

Wow...I could say many things here, but I'll say only one: you should be ashamed of yourself to feel the need to defend the evil clown currently posing as your POTUS. And if you are a woman even more so.

Mother of fallen soldier says Trump showed 'disrespect' to family

The mother of an Army sergeant killed in Niger said Wednesday that President Donald Trump, in a call offering condolences, showed "disrespect" to the soldier's loved ones as they drove to the airport to meet his body. Trump, engulfed in controversy over the appropriate way for presidents to show compassion for slain soldiers, strongly disputed that account.

Sgt. La David Johnson was one of four American military personnel killed nearly two weeks ago whose families had not heard from Trump until Tuesday. Rep. Frederica Wilson said that Trump told the widow that Johnson "knew what he signed up for."

The Florida Democrat said she was in the car with the widow, Myeshia Johnson, on the way to Miami International Airport to meet the body when Trump called. La David Johnson's mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, told The Associated Press Wednesday that the congresswoman's account was correct.

"Yes the statement is true," Jones-Johnson said. "I was in the car and I heard the full conversation. Not only did he disrespect my son," but he disrespected his wife and me and my husband.

That's simply not so, Trump said Wednesday. He declared on Twitter: "Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!"

But Wilson did not back down from her account, adding that Trump at one point could not remember the slain sergeant's name.

"It's disgraceful for him to even tweet about this," she told CNN. She added a personal insult: "And as I say, this gentleman has a brain disorder and he needs to be checked out."

Like presidents before him, Trump has made personal contact with some families of the fallen but not all. What's different is that Trump, alone among them, has picked a political fight over who's done better to honor the war dead and their families.

He placed himself at the top of the list, saying on Tuesday, "I think I've called every family of someone who's died" while past presidents didn't place such calls.

But The Associated Press found relatives of two soldiers who died overseas during Trump's presidency who said they never received a call or a letter from him, as well as relatives of a third who did not get a call. And proof is plentiful that Barack Obama and George W. Bush — saddled with far more combat casualties than the roughly two dozen so far under Trump, took painstaking steps to write, call or meet bereaved military families.

After her Army son died in an armored vehicle rollover in Syria in May, Sheila Murphy says, she got no call or letter from Trump, even as she waited months for his condolences and wrote him that "some days I don't want to live."

In contrast, Trump called to comfort Eddie and Aldene Lee about 10 days after their Army son was killed in an explosion while on patrol in Iraq in April. "Lovely young man," Trump said, according to Aldene. She thought that was a beautiful word to hear about her boy, "lovely."

Trump's delay in publicly discussing the men lost at Niger did not appear to be extraordinary, judging from past examples, but his politicization of the matter is. He went so far Tuesday as to cite the death of chief of staff John Kelly's son in Afghanistan to question whether Obama had properly honored the war dead.

Kelly was a Marine general under Obama when his Marine son Robert died in 2010. "You could ask General Kelly, did he get a call from Obama?" Trump said on Fox News radio.

A White House official said later that Obama did not call Kelly but did not respond to questions whether some other sort of outreach was made. Democrats and some former government officials were livid, accusing Trump of "inane cruelty" and a "sick game."

Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, an Iraq veteran who lost both legs when her helicopter was attacked, said: "I just wish that this commander in chief would stop using Gold Star families as pawns in whatever sick game he's trying to play here."

For their part, Gold Star families, which have lost members in wartime, told AP of acts of intimate kindness from Obama and Bush when those commanders in chief consoled them.

Trump initially claimed that only he among presidents made sure to call families. Obama may have done so on occasion, he said, but "other presidents did not call."

He equivocated Tuesday as the record made plain that his characterization was false. "I don't know," he said of past calls. But he said his own practice was to call all families of the war dead.

But that hasn't happened.

No White House protocol demands that presidents speak or meet with the families of Americans killed in action — an impossible task in a war's bloodiest stages. But they often do.

Altogether some 6,900 Americans have been killed in overseas wars since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the overwhelming majority under Bush and Obama.

Despite the much heavier toll on his watch — more than 800 dead each year from 2004 through 2007 — Bush wrote to all bereaved military families and met or spoke with hundreds if not thousands, said his spokesman, Freddy Ford.

Veterans groups said they had no quarrel with how presidents have recognized the fallen or their families.

"I don't think there is any president I know of who hasn't called families," said Rick Weidman, co-founder and executive director of Vietnam Veterans of America. "President Obama called often and President Bush called often. They also made regular visits to Walter Reed and Bethesda Medical Center, going in the evenings and on Saturdays."

Trump feuded with one Gold Star family during last year's campaign, assailing the parents of slain Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in Iraq in 2004, after they criticized him from the stage at the Democratic National Convention.

Lemire reported from New York. Associated Press writers Jennifer Kay in Miami, Russ Bynum in Savannah, Georgia. Jonathan Drew in Raleigh, North Carolina, Kristen de Groot in Philadelphia, Jennifer McDermott in Providence, Rhode Island, Michelle Price in Salt Lake City, and Hope Yen and Robert Burns in Washington contributed to this report.

I agree. Trust me, nothing made my skin crawl more than hearing **** like "well, you knew deployments are part of the job so why are you upset?' I heard that multiple times. We know the life, and we know the price that could be paid. That being said- I've read several reports that the Congresswoman only heard part of the conversation. So we really DON'T know what was said. I wish the news would wait until EVERYTHING comes out... THEN report it. Instead, we have sources running amok with half-truths and info, causing more grief and more hated on both sides. I used to really be into politics, but with the current state of news reporting, I'm done.

I have nothing to be ashamed of, Elfie. I prefer to wait for ALL facts to come out before taking a side. If that's shameful, then I can't help you.

YES,NO DOUBT!

Did it take him almost two weeks to call? Check.

Did he insult the Khan family so that we have precedent? Check.

Did he insult John McCain in the same way? Check.

Do we have proof people in P.R. are drinking contaminated water? Check.

You can't "void" my thoughts on your best day son, but you need to check yours because you are coming off as a typical Trumptard.

Really?????

Well Trump did claim he has proof, so we'll just wait on that "proof" just like we're waiting for those tapes from the conversation he had with Comey........we'll just wait ,huh Lynn?

Of course the Congresswoman, and THE MOTHER of the serviceman killed, their words are not good enough for you.......gee I wonder why? No you have to wait for a known pathological liar to tell you what happened............like I said SHAME.

The same Congresswoman who said that Trump has a brain disorder. WITH NO PROOF. Yeah. She's believable.

Yea, shitstain, I'm a Trumptard because I want facts, you delusional windowlicker? Sucking on Obama's dick for 8 years has you clinically brain dead.

This is beyond absurd. Civilians are stupid.

Every Green Beret “knows what he signed up for” . That is to kill the enemy and blow up their stuff. This is a mark of pride.

This here sounds like another anti -Trump effort which is racially motivated and exploited

So - if President Trump said that, You can say it in an honorable way - “He was a brave man, and he knew what he signed up for.”

You can take it, if you are so inclined and already hate the man, another way.

To me, this woman does not like Trump and wanted to dump her misery on him. She is the one who is not respectful, imho.

The mother of the fallen Soldier heard the whole thing. She says it happened and that Trump didn't even remember his name. While this congresswoman probably has political motivation to say this stuff, I doubt the mother of a fallen Soldier is going to play politics on her way to meet her son's body.

I wanna be wrong, not because I like Trump, but because I don't know how you allow yourself to say that to the widow of a dead Soldier. Surely he isn't that cold and callous.

The same Congresswoman who said that Trump has a brain disorder. WITH NO PROOF. Yeah. She's believable.

The good thing about anyone in the public eye is they can be evaluated psychologically as opposed to the average person who would have to be analyzed in person. As Tomlin would say " He has his body of work on tape." There is no doubt about this man having a severe mental condition.

That is some fabulous spin. Professional grade stuff. What amazes me is that Americans still wonder why politicians act the way they do. People on both sides line up to enable them. Looking more and more like the American populace is the swamp needing drained. People need retraining on what accountability actually is.

Your opinion isn't humble: It's full of bias and presumption.

What about what he said to the Khans, or to McCain?

Hopefully, one of these two, the congresswoman or Trump, will provide the proof. I won't hold my breath waiting for either.

Yea, shitstain, I'm a Trumptard because I want facts, you delusional windowlicker? Sucking on Obama's dick for 8 years has you clinically brain dead.

I just listed them for you knucklehead. Are you illiterate as well as stupid?

This IS who Trump is, but hey keep living in the denial.

Maybe he did say it like that, but didn't mean it to be disrespecting, but it came across that way. We all know words can be misinterpreted or taken the wrong way. Then again, knowing his way with words, who knows? For his sake and the window and her family's sake, I hope what he said was comforting or his intentions were in a good place.
