Whether you think he’s a bust or not virtually everyone agrees this is a critical camp for Jarvis Jones.

By camp reports * it seems like Chicklillo and Duprree are a bit better than Jarvis Jones. Howard Jones is making some noise too. Moats has the inside track to start. Lots of talent at outside linebacker.

It appears we have two good-looking rookies who are already making more plays than Jones is. Suppose this trend continues?

Would the Steelers be better or giving the younger guys more playing time at Jarvis Jones’ expense? I say yes.

Jones if he does not start has little value to the team because he's too slow to deploy in coverage on any down and, isn't among our best four pass rushers. Playing kick coverage for special teams isn't an option either. He reminds me of an undersized defensive end who's not great vs the run. A one trick pony who's trick is rather average, and injury prone to boot.

As such I'd entertain trade offers for Jones.

Camp reports are not saying what you claim they are saying. And Jarvis is going to start as long as he is healthy.

Which reports say Dupree, Chickillo and Moats are not making more plays? And who said he's going to start?

You might want to check out Steeler Depot camp report.

I've read all the reports on Steelers Depot (and listened to their podcasts). No one EVER has said that Chickillo is ahead of Jarvis. You are just making that up.

"HE WILL START UNLESS HE IS INJURED" - SteelerAl on August 3. I will not be wrong.

Good luck trading him. If all we needed was a 5th for Brandon Boykin, what makes you think we'll get anything of value for Jarvis?

If what you're saying is true and Chick, Dupree, and Howard are all ahead of Jarvis, might as well just cut the cord. I don't know if that's true or not, just saying, if it is, just cut the kid.

It's not true. It's a typical bullshit Coach invention.

No one is saying Chick or Dupree are anywhere close to starting over Uncle Jarvis. They aren't even playing the same side. They haven't even faced Beachum all camp. Coach you have to chill with this craziness lol

Steelers Depot reports are that he's doing great against the run. Has his hands full with Beachum, but does beat him also. Beats Villanueva consistently (as he should). He's had a couple of interceptions. He's running with the first team against the first and second team, not against third team talent and guys who will be handing you your fries in 5 - 6 weeks.

Like it or not, Jarvis is and will be the starter at ROLB for the Steelers barring injury. He's having a solid, but not spectacular, camp.

find a link to ANY story that states either of those guys are AHEAD of Jones......

Follow the money. He isn't a problem child. They will not pay him two million to go away this year. They will likely keep 5 OLB's because it is one of the best ST type of body (big and fast). Harrison, Moats, Dupree, Jarvis and Chickillo (or whoever). Now if he doesn't start or make a serious contribution he just won't be re-signed and will be here next year or not depending on the competition.

Coach, I think FoxNews may have an opening for you on their crack news team.

I opened this without realizing it was a Coach thread.

I blame myself.

I think you mean MSNBC... you know the ones that are the bottom dwellers of the ratings....

You left out Moats. Gee I wonder why?. Depot said they think Moats will start. Oh, so now you said it.:poop: Okay, might save this quote.

I never said Chickillo is ahead, only that he has been making more plays. I do think Moats is ahead.

Look man, he has been a bust. He's slow, has not offered much in pass rush, and gets easily injured. Can't play special teams...and our first round pick is at his positions. These are the facts. And you know it. Use whatever little football acumen you have to put 2 and 2 together.

Okay, so he’s bigger….that means he’s also a little slower.

You think there is room for coach???

Well many here think he's good, so if they are correct he's worth a lot more than a 5th round pick. I think a 5th round pick is about right. He's tradable because he does not have a big cap number.

I think Moats is ahead of him, and the rookies have flashed better talent.

By the way the title of the thread has not been answered. Jones is not a lock to start.

I think this year is going to be telling with the change in DCs. Was it LeBeau keeping the vets in? Will Butler sit a guy with "draft pedigree" like Jarvis in favor of someone with potential/better, or will he get the Ziggy treatment for the next 3 years?

Camp reports are not saying what you claim they are saying. And Jarvis is going to start as long as he is healthy.

Were you referring to the reports that had him being stoned by both Beachum and the back up or Labs and his report of being "underwhelmed" by Jones. There is give and take by all of the guys in camp in that they are looking good at times and bad at times but the thing that was stressed is to keep track of who puts up the most positives. Saying that Jarvis is doing as well as some rookie projects is not a plus for Jarvis who by the way is in the position he played in college and his 4th year. Bud and Chick are posting more positives than Jarvis so far and likely to be the future starters on the team and Jarvis is likely to be gone. So far his high point will be barely adequate. His prowess when being handed the job was so great it involved bringing back Harrison who the team released and was also released by the bengals. Jarvis was so good the steelers drafted two more outside linebackers this year!

If he does not start looking better than he has so far he is likely to be gone as the steelers will have better players to put on the field and would be foolish to save a spot for jarvis and stash better players on the practice squad to be taken by other teams.

You do realize that Moats plays LOLB and that Jones Plays ROLB two totally different positions. Dupree is playing left and so is Chick I believe. Harrison is Jones back up followed by H Jones. Once again he isn't having a bad camp.. which is only a week in anyway

Harrison was brought back because of injury not because Jones was playing bad. Injury. Who knows if he wasn't injured if James is on the team right now.. but everything happens for a reason and maybe it was meant for James to be here mentoring these guys..

Training camp reports are just that, blurbs and snipets from bystanders, bloggers and journalists who get a quick glimpse of the action then report on it. Without naming sources (you'll have to trust me they're legit) this would paint an entirely different picture of how Jarvis is doing:

"Jarvis Jones and Beachum having great battles in one on one."

Jarvis runs through Will Johnson on Coates end around. Great play.

Jarvis Jones and Shazier BLEW UP an end-around to Coates.

Topic No. 1 when it comes to No. 95: He weighs 258 pounds, as of 11:35 a.m. today. Told me so himself, and this right after a hearty lunch at the Saint Vincent cafeteria. That’s an increase of 15 pounds from his 243 weight of a year ago, again right from the man himself. So yes, Nation, he really, truly has bulked up. “I’m a little bigger,” he was saying with a small smile. “I’m a little stronger, too.”

I dunno, I guess I'll let the team hit the field and play a few pre-season games before I start making any type of general assessment of where Jones, or the other players are in their development.

Wow there will be lots of guys surprised when Jarvis is gone. Tunch..."Anthony Chicillo sure looks like the first round pick and that is what you would think if they were not wearing numbers" There are others out there regarding the same thing. Jones has had some decent comments but not as many as negatives. I suspect he will not live up to his expectations. At this point to me he seems to bring less to the game than the other players we have.

Problem is Jarvis Jones is just a guy and has been his entire career with Steelers, small, slow, weak and not explosive. These traits don't change regardless of the round he was picked in and seeing other superior athletes playing the same position just highlights his lack of physical talent. It was a huge mistake when the Steelers ran to the podium with 14 minutes left on the clock to [ick the bust and it is even more stupidity to keep playing the guy in front of better, superior athletes with much better potential.
