Who will emerge as the Steelers 2nd WR?

Brown
Wheaton
Moore
Bryant
Justin Brown

It's not a receiving corps that leaps off the page at you is it?

Is Justin Brown NFL fast or not? The only time that I can find for him is 4.60 in the 40 which doesn't sound like the answer to me but then that was Anquan Boldin's time too so I'm happy to hear the positives.

wheaton, is whom I'm thinking will be #2. Time will tell, but just my 2cents.

Salute the nation

Sounds like it's going to be Wheaton on opening day and then will be evaluated after the first 4 weeks (and based on practice film) to see if a change needs to be made.

Could see Bryant/J. Brown get reps in the red zone (that will depend on practice film too).

I sort of think Bryant and Brown will be very limited early (there's a chance to me that Bryant is not active on some game days since Brown plays special teams). After the first 2-3 weeks, things will just be decided based on performance.

I do agree it looks like Brown, Wheaton, Moore, Bryant and Brown sound like the correct 5 WR's to choose going into the season. Heyward-Bay only makes the team if we decide on 6 WR's, which would be rare but not out of the question.

Im starting to like the idea of a big body guy(Justin Brown) opposite of Antonio Brown.

Markus Wheaton legitimately frightens me if he is our #2. Justin Brown would make me more comfortable given all we've heard about his progress this summer

By all accounts Wheaton has looked great this offseason. If he and Brown continue to emerge creating a big 4 of ABrown Wheaton Moore and JBrown that would be ideal. Giving Bryant time.

Wheaton or Bryant but Wheaton has to kick it up a notch from last year and also stay healthy.

DHB will make the team for his special teams play some of you guys can't see past his drops. He has great size and speed and excelled in that area when asked to. Wheaton will certainly get his shot as number two but if he fails we have plenty I options.

For me its hard to put Wheaton at #2 when he has such little erxperience. I see us running a lot of 3 WR sets with A.Brown Moore and Wheaton. After that it gets messy. Bryant will be on the team and it sounds like Brown is doing well. I dont see DHB making the team especially if Archer has a good camp. Our young WRs need to learn quick or A.Brown is going to have a rough year.

Steelers WR Wheaton wants to produce after injury-plagued rookie year

They could have brought in a more high-profile free agent.

They could have drafted a wide receiver higher than at No. 118.

If the Steelers are concerned that Markus Wheaton isn't ready to make the leap from a nondescript, injury-plagued rookie year to replacing at least a portion of free-agent defectors Emmanuel Sanders' and Jerricho Cotchery's combined 113 catches and 16 touchdowns, they didn't proceed that way in the offseason.

In fact, they gave Wheaton a vote of confidence by doing what they did with their wide receiver crew in the offseason, which was not much at all.

“Now, he has got to be the man,” Steelers receiver coach Richard Mann said. “Somebody has to pick up that slack. The good thing about him is that he doesn't need a lot of reps. It doesn't take him long to get it.”

“I consider myself a quick learner, and I have been like that for a while,” Wheaton said.

That's good, because the Steelers don't have much time to piece together a wide receiver group for Ben Roethlisberger and his sometimes pass-happy offense.

Antonio Brown returns after having a career year with 110 catches and 1,499 yards, but the rest of the unit, minus free agent additions Lance Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey, combined for eight receptions. Wheaton had six of those.

The onus will be on Wheaton, the Steelers' third-round pick in 2013, to step into the starting role opposite of Brown.

“The expectation level is high,” Roethlisberger said. “He was doing some really good things last year until he got hurt. He kind of lost some confidence I think in himself, but he's got it back and I'm just excited for him to take that next step in Year 2.”

Year 1 got off to a rousing start for Wheaton.

Despite missing all of spring practices because his class at Oregon State had yet to graduate, Wheaton showed up to training camp and was an instant sensation.

“Last year I was thinking a lot and didn't know if I was over-thinking things or just trying to get something down,” Wheaton said. “When you are thinking like that, you can't play at the speed you want to play.”

Wheaton played sparingly through the first three weeks before taking part in 36 snaps in a Week 4 game against Minnesota. One of those plays — he doesn't remember which one — Wheaton broke his right pinky finger in three places. It was an injury that proved to be troublesome.

Wheaton didn't get back on the field until Week 11 against the Detroit Lions, but the finger continued to be an issue. He didn't have a catch from Weeks 12-17, and he needed to have additional postseason surgery.

“He came back and played and was still adequate,” Mann said. “With that said, that tells me something about him. Basically, I need him to pick up where he left off last year.”

Wheaton acknowledges the pressure that comes with the expectations and welcomes it.

“I feel like I feed off the pressure and embrace it,” Wheaton said. “I don't want to be just another guy in the locker room. I don't want to be just another name that passes through the program.”

Wheaton will get every opportunity to prove he's not one of those guys.

The Steelers don't have much returning experience at wide receiver.

NAME G REC YDS TDS

Antonio Brown 16 110 1,499 8

Markus Wheaton 12 6 64 0

Derek Moye 8 2 20 1

Justin Brown 0 0 0 0

* Veterans Lance Moore, Darrius Heyward-Bey signed as free agents

I don't see them cutting DHB or Moore after signing them, I think they're locked in unless one gets hurt or ***** the bed, and Moye will battle J. Brown for the #5 spot again. As much as I'd like to see my homey make the team again, I don't know that Moye can beat out J. Brown two years in a row.

Derek Moye 8 2 20 1
Wasn't used properly in Black & Gold last year.

WR is a position in transition
July 27, 2014 02:21 PM | Mike Prisuta

LATROBE, Pa. - It's a position that's in transition, but also one with an opportunity for rejuvenation.

"I think we have a chance to kind of rejuvenate our group," wide receivers coach Richard Mann said upon arriving at Saint Vincent College.

At the very least the Steelers need to repopulate the position after the free-agent departures of Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery, because those two combined for 113 catches, 1,342 receiving yards and 16 receiving touchdowns in 2013.

The offseason's Organized Team Activities and minicamps suggested growth and potential at the position. Now that training camp has commenced Mann is looking forward to additional steps being taken, especially when the Steelers hold a pair of joint practices with the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 13-14 on campus here.

"One of the big tests will be when we go against Buffalo," Mann said. "We'll see just exactly where we are."

In the interim Mann offered a few thoughts on some of the contenders at wide receiver this summer:

On second-year pro Markus Wheaton, a No. 3 pick in 2013:
"I think the sky's the limit for him. We just have to keep him going."

On veteran free-agent acquisition Lance Moore:
"He's a cagey guy playing on the inside (slot) position. It takes talent to play in there. It takes a lot of savvy to play in there. Jerricho Cotchery was a guy we used in there. I think (Moore) will pick up the slack that we lost with Cotchery."

On No. 4 pick Martavis Bryant, 6-foot-4, 211-pounds:
"He's a guy who's going to help us, there's no question."

On last year's No. 6a pick Justin Brown, 6-3, 209:
"I think he's a totally different guy (this season). He has a different look about him physically. He has a different look in his eye. His attitude is different."

The roster at wide receiver will unquestionably be different this season. The Steelers will learn soon enough about the specifics of their transition at the position.

"Once we start playing tackle (the shoulder pads come on Monday) and we start hitting and the lights come on, then we'll see exactly what we have," Mann said.

I agree on this completely. And with DHB, they have Archer who will line up at receiver as well, so the odds of keeping a sixth receiver would seem to go down.

Why does Wheaton frighten you but you feel comfortable with Brown? Wheaton had a good training camp last year and injuries got the best of him. He has not looked bad in camp and you have to remember that Brown wasn't a roster player last year, so his progression may still only mean he's capable of being a No. 4 or 5. Maybe he will be more, I just don't understand this logic.

I don't think the Steelers would put a "lock" behind Brown and Moye in the receiver rotations. DHB has his work cut out.

I see no indications form camp notes that DHB is getting any benefit of the doubt or advantage because he's a free agent signing. He's got to beat out Bryant (draft pick given the benefit of the doubt) and J. Brown (another big body that can play special teams).

Wheaton, A. Brown and Moore are the only real "locks" on the roster at WR. I think Bryant is close, but you never know. 4th round picks are not guarantees and he surely would be picked up by someone else if released. Comes down to J. Browns vs. DHB vs. Moye.

Really can't see 6 WR's this year. Especially with Archer wearing a WR number. Could happen, but only if we decide to only go into the season with Bell, Blount and Archer at RB (no one else) and only keep 9 O-lineman (likely).

Crazy to have brown, archer, Wheaton and DHB all on the field at one time. How does a D cover all that speed? Lol don't say why cover DHB he will drop it anyways lol

Wheaton frightens me because I'm not sure he is capable of getting separation. I've watched enough highlights of Wheaton to know that like 90% of his big plays are catches in traffic after which he is immediately tackled because he is draped by at least one defender. Don't get me wrong, making tough catches is fantastic and a trait sorely lacked by our #2 guy last year, and I look forward to Wheaton doing that regularly, but I want to see him get true separation. I want to see a catch where he ISN'T draped all over by defenders and can actually run after the catch and show off that track speed. I've seen like 2 college plays of his where he actually broke loose into open space. I don't like that.

The Raiders put out similar speed many times... Defenses had no problems covering them. In that group only Brown has done anything in the NFL.

Justin Brown. He has the same amount of years as Wheaton, and it looked like he could handle the extra load in OTAs. His hands are unquestioned and he has good size and speed. We may have developed a more sure handed Nate Washington.

I was going to comment but was thinking of Dwight Stone, Nate was not really a bad player.

And how does that make you more comfortable with Justin Brown? He doesn't get separation, just uses his size. If both make the catch and get tackled immediately, how is one better than the other?

Wheaton by reports has been doing well with separation, Justin on a lesser scale. Thing is both have potential to contribute, but IMO just how much or less....won't be known until regular season, the games are played.

Dont frighten so easily, he'll be fine

Agreed - from what I've read this year his route running is much improved and I'm sure that will help with the separation side. At least he has genuine NFL speed (4.40).
