Joe Biden’s DNC Speech Sounded A Lot Like A Jack Layton Quote
Some lines sounded very similar to the late NDP leader’s last words to Canadians.
By Melanie Woods

Former vice-president Joe Biden delivered a stirring speech as he accepted the party’s nomination for president at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night.

“Let us begin you and I together, one nation under God. United in our love for America. United in our love for each other,” Biden said. “For love is more powerful than hate, hope is more powerful than fear and light is more powerful than dark.”

Biden’s words about the power of love over hate were heralded as inspirational, as he looks to defeat President Donald Trump in the November election.

There’s just one thing: Canadians have heard those words before. Or, at least, a version of them.

In his final message to Canadians, the late NDP leader Jack Layton promised something quite similar.

“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”

Many Canadians on Twitter were quick to take notice of the similarity.

While others were touched that Layton’s words were once again being mobilized for change.

Biden’s campaign did not respond to HuffPost Canada’s request for comment on whether Layton was a reference for the speech.

But even Layton wasn’t the first Canadian politician to mobilize “love is better than hate” phrasing. That honour goes to prime minister Wilfrid Laurier, who said something similar in 1916.

“I shall remind you that already many problems rise before you: problems of race division, problems of creed difference, problems of economic con*flict, problems of national duty and national aspiration,” Laurier said during a speech in London, Ont.

“Let me tell you that for the solution of these problems you have a safe guide, an unfailing light if you remember that faith is better than doubt and love is better than hate.”

Biden has been accused of using other politicians’ words before. His first presidential run in 1988 was halted amid multiple instances of plagiarism, including lifting specific phrases and from a British Labour Party politician Neil Kinnock while making closing remarks at a debate.

So a member of my wife's extended family has been a dyed in the wool Massachusetts born trust fundafarian and Democrat since probably the 60s. He came from an elite family and pretty much squandered his life by being an idiot and not taking advantage of the opportunities that life afforded him.

He is a likable enough guy and I enjoyed talking to him until he started talking politics and every possible bad thing in life is the fault of the Republicans. It was Bush's fault back in the 00s and the Republicans fault during the Obama years and he damn sure can't stand Trump to nobody's surprise.

So I hear that he voted today. Didn't even give Biden a chance to show his cards. The way I look at the guy now is that if he supports a party that supports socialism, communism, Marxism, and Facism with such vigor, and has put thus country through so much crap the past 12 years, (the Dem majority in Congress mixed the ingredients to cause the financial meltdown and usher in Obama)I see him as just a pawn of the establishment and in effect an enemy of the US and our way of life. I don't want anything to do with him at this point. Is that wrong? Am I being too harsh on the guy?

His family and anyone who call themselves a friend of his should be downright ashamed. That's such cringeworthy **** ever uttered by a Presidential candidate that part of me still doesn't believe it's real.

**** no. Sounds like he's been a privileged, ignorant jackass his entire life (or at least the time you've known him), so why should he get even an ounce of your time or energy? I understand he's extended family from your wife's side, but if he ain't blood, wasn't in your wedding or isn't godfather to any of your children, **** him with a prickly cactus.

It's a damn shame. He's an old hippie who likes the same music as me, he went to Woodstock, has all these fun stories about when he was younger and he damn well took advantage of the freedoms the country offered. Back then there's no way in hell he'd be a subservient pawn in lock step with whatever the federal state or local government mandates. He was all for Peace and Love and now he's aligned with Antifa and anarchists and can't see it. How freaking crazy is that?

This must be the way it felt for the Germans who witnessed their friends and neighbors side with the National Socialist Workers Party.

Huff post even reported it. See post#231.

The very definition of nepotism. Let the shitshow commence...

Unfortunately they are likely the only people in DC he can trust. I hear the DC establishment doesn't care for him too much as he's trying to cut out the dead wood, make things more efficient whereby the Federal govt doesn't have overarching control over everything. As you'd expect he's running into some roadblocks set up by the political elite, foreign adversaries and their minions. It's a damn shame

Sorry to hear man. I was exaggerating a bit, and sounds like you guys have some history. It's a great thing when you can connect with others over shared love of certain music IMO. I'm sure you've already done this but maybe tell him absolutely no talk of politics whatsoever.

With the coming election and the shitshow that's already here, seems almost impossible to do though.

What a concept, huh? Trump was new to politics and likely made many decisions based on other's 'recommendations', or maybe who he thought he knew the best at the time etc. I mean how familiar can anybody really be with DC until they've been immersed in it for a while? And how often does a non-politician become the President of the United States?

Trump is a lot of things and has a lot of warts, but how effectively he's been able to clear a lot of the clutter and get some things done that he campaigned on promising to do is actually pretty impressive.

For a non-politician of course! (Lol, like they do or have done jack **** historically)

ItSaulGood. I actually talked to the guy today and just talked cars.

Interesting that Biden keeps harping on about this re: Trump (listen carefully):

Romney may just be a slick empty suit who lost his soul somewhere along the way, but he is certainly no dummy.

I dunno, I worked on his campaign at the state level and for damn sure him and his people didn't know how to run a campaign, it was a clusterfuck. McCain actually did a much better job.

Plus McCain had Palin, so....
