It took Lamar a long time to evolve into a top rated passer.

We can dispel the belief that’s been voiced throughout this forum ever since Lamar was drafted back in 2018…that he is a running back first, and a mediocre QB second. A running back playing QB.
This same mentality was expressed by Ravens fans, analysts, and other talking head “experts”.

The Rats coaching staff should get credit for their patience.

Had he been a Steeler, I wouldn’t be going out on a limb to say that we here at SN would have called for his head, and that he would have met the same fate as Pickett…outa here in two years.

What do Yinz think?
Fields had only played 3 full seasons.
Use patience and continue to work with him?

My issue is I don’t want to wait as long as it took Lamar.
I’m too ******* old.

I think he could become Lamar-like. He's not quite as shifty, but he can run and has good vision. He has a cannon for an arm, and in his 6 starts you could see that he was improving from things he was run out of Chicago for. I think he is coachable and puts the work in. He has a great attitude. I would much rather them sign him than Wilson. He's only 25, turns 26 in March. He's actually younger than Pickett!

I see some promise in Justin. I also take into account that he's had to learn a new system every year of his NFL career. That can't be productive. Lamar's had one system. Or, at least a HC who would **** can any idea that put Lamar into situations that weren't aligned with his abilities.

No, Fields isn't as fast, not as accurate (not that Lamar is super accurate) and most of all, Harbaugh actually built that offense around Lamar, Tomlin would never do that. And it didn't take Lamar a long time to get going, his first year as a starter he completed 66% of his passes, 36 TD's, and 6 INT's to go along with 1200 yards rushing and 7 TD's

If Tomlin was going to build something, it would have already been built..lol. He builds false hope.

I hate both Harbaughs, but admit they are good coaches. By Tomlins own admission, he shouldn’t have to teach people how to do their jobs 😈

I don't think Fields can become Lamar but he has not reached his ceiling at all. He has been in 3 or 4 offenses so far in his short career. That hinders most young QB's. Wilson won't improve. He is well down the backside of his career. Fields still may end up being a good QB in the NFL. He said he didn't like trying to learn so many offenses in his career and is a big reason he may stay in Pittsburgh. He also said Russ has been a tremendous mentor and he learned a lot from going back to the bench behind Russ. I hope he does get another chance, one in which he is allowed to throw the ball.

True, Fields 40 time was 4.44, which still ranks him among the top 5 fastest QB’s ever.
M. Vick and Jackson hold the fastest 40 for a QB at 4.33.

Fields is still very fast which makes me believe that for all intents and purposes Jackson doesn’t have that significant of an advantage in that category.

I wonder if after 8 yrs in the league Jackson is still that fast.

Jackson seems more shifty or quick than Fields does when you see them both run, but we aren't built to develop Fields.

No, if only because there is no way the current staff could help him develop to that level. He may have the talent, but it will never be realized here.

So you’re saying that Fields can be Lamar like…but maybe elsewhere.

Jackson seems to be bigger / stronger but he is listed as 20pounds lighter than Fields. I'm not surehow accurate that is. I'm not sure if Fields could become Lamar or not. We barely let him throw the ball plus our line is not as good. Fields has some potential i think he just needs put in the right system.

Only if they are willing to do what Baltiwhore did and totally revamp the offense to fit what he does best and not try to make him something he isn't.

I'm saying it's possible elsewhere but it will never happen in Pittsburgh under the current coaching staff.

Fields amazed me with his speed and quickness. When he would be heading outside, I would think there is no way he can get there. Sure enough, he got there and then some. Get him with the top QB coach out there and have him work with him for the next 2 or 3 offseasons. I believe Allen with the Bills had accuracy issues and his guy corrected everything with Allen heading into his 3rd season. Fields is still very young and nowhere near his ceiling.

It didn't take Jackson long, he has never had a full season rating under 100. If he had regressed in any year, you could make a case for coaching staff being patient but Jackson was the franchise as soon as he took over the starting job. There was never a doubt about that

He can read defenses and makes excellent decisions. And you can say he hasn't had a top WR which makes it more impressive. His numbers this season are gaudy with Henry by his side. 41/4/9YPA plus his rushing stats. They're getting their money's worth.

As for speed, Fields has more than enough but can he read defenses and handle pressure? I think if he'd show this in camp and while he was starter, Wilson would have stayed on the bench. Can Fields improve? Absolutely. Can he improve enough to be trusted with the franchise? We'll find out this summer

I doubt Baltimore made the decision to stick with Jackson at any cost, he just never gave them a reason to doubt him.

This is Year 7, and 6th full season and he looked awfully cool back there on Saturday night and without his #1 WR.

Buffalo is favored by a point at home in 15° weather.

absolutely not.

close the thread, mods.

Lamar has surprised me since I never thought he’d be as good as he’s turned out to be.
He had the fortune to be drafted by Baltimore where Harbaugh had the smarts to develop his offense around Lamar’s talents.
Justin whom I really like and admire. The young man did a good job for six games and when Tomlin sat him down, he never complained. He was the consummate professional and I love that about him.
He’s a super talented guy that needs a break with the right organization that will build around his strengths like Lamar but it’s not here. Tomlin is not capable of that and wouldn’t hire the right coaches to do it.
I think if you put him in the correct environment, solid coaching, good OL, quality skill players, yes I think he can be very, very good. Idk if as good as Lamar but he’s a talent that’s for sure. Just unfortunate to be drafted by Bears and picked up by Steelers who don’t have a clue in how to develop him.

Did it really take a long time for Lamar to develop? His QB Rating was 113.3 his second year in the league. Ben never had a rating that high. Lamar's career rating is also higher than Ben's. Just because Steeler fans say Lamar sucks doesn't actually mean that Lamar sucks.

That's based on the regular season. He hasn't fared so well in the postseason, but he is lighting it up so far this year.

ALSO, last season only two players reached either 22 or 26mph on field(I can’t remember which) as per next generation stats. One of those two was Justin Fields, the other one was NOT Action Jackson.

Fields is plenty fast.!!!
