With patience can Fields become the next Lamar?

Fields can be the next Lamar with a little time and practice.
I think I still have my old bedazzler kit to help with the dental work.

Not always but usually a player's ceiling becomes visible in the first two or max three years. Fields isn't terrible. Frankly if price is right I'd prefer him next year to Russ. I think the closest he gets to MVP is sitting at awards night watching.

It didn't take Jackson long, he has never had a full season rating under 100. If he had regressed in any year, you could make a case for coaching staff being patient but Jackson was the franchise as soon as he took over the starting job. There was never a doubt about that

He can read defenses and makes excellent decisions. And you can say he hasn't had a top WR which makes it more impressive. His numbers this season are gaudy with Henry by his side. 41/4/9YPA plus his rushing stats. They're getting their money's worth.

As for speed, Fields has more than enough but can he read defenses and handle pressure? I think if he'd show this in camp and while he was starter, Wilson would have stayed on the bench. Can Fields improve? Absolutely. Can he improve enough to be trusted with the franchise? We'll find out this summer

I doubt Baltimore made the decision to stick with Jackson at any cost, he just never gave them a reason to doubt him.

This is Year 7, and 6th full season and he looked awfully cool back there on Saturday night and without his #1 WR.

Buffalo is favored by a point at home in 15° weather.
Well he hasnt won a afc or super bowl ring yet for all his greatness. Hopefully never does

Idk, perhaps they can get a couple of nerds to help him develop his throwing habits with the football just like they did with the javelin because of his naturally limp wrist

Maybe a lesser version of Lamar with a unique offense. Our coaching staff has zero ability to build such an offense.

I hope the Wilson experiment is over. He would be an excellent backup at this point in his career, with a high floor, but now a considerably lower ceiling than in his prime. But he probably doesn’t want to be backup and will definitely want more than backup pay.

Regardless, at his age, and not drafting high, in 2 to 3 years, it will be back to square one and similar situation to when BB retired.

The play at this point should be to keep Fields, build around him and get a solid, non-threat backup, to give Fields the confidence that the staff is behind him and will work through the growing pains to find his potential. His floor may be lower, but his ceiling is an absolute unknown, and could be significantly greater than Wilson at this point.

Realistically, there’s no one in the draft likely with more potential than Fields, that the Steelers will have a shot at and who is out there in free agency with more potential that they have a realistic shot at getting? Darnold is very likely staying with the Vikings.

Basically either way, they may be looking for a QB in a couple years if they go with Fields, but maybe not??? With Wilson, they definitely are in no more than 2-3 years, without a doubt!

O line was atrocious. Wilson is still a starter.

If Wilson leaves and goes to a team with a line that can protect him, he will light it up. He's excellent at manipulating secondary, excellent decision maker, excellent accuracy and beautiful deep ball. He is a competitor and a team guy.

Obv I don't get the Wilson hate when the O line was bad. Imagine if he had receivers besides Muth

It ain't easy and they go to Buffalo Sunday. How many great teams have we seen lose in the playoffs the past 20 years alone

If they beat Buffalo I want them to beat KC

With a solid OC/ QB coach in the right scheme he could at least be better than Kordell. Not sure he’s got Lamar’s ceiling BUT you’d definitely never find out what his ceiling is operating under the constraints of a Mike Tomlin scheme…

Remember it’s not Mike’s job to develop players, and he proves it every season by NOT developing players AND retaining his job. He must be right, Rooney doesn’t require his HC to coach up and develop players…OBVIOUSLY

Hopefully he finds the right situation for himself cuz he seems like a good kid and started his NFL career moving from one dumpster fire to another

It took Lamar a long time to evolve into a top rated passer.

We can dispel the belief that’s been voiced throughout this forum ever since Lamar was drafted back in 2018…that he is a running back first, and a mediocre QB second. A running back playing QB.
This same mentality was expressed by Ravens fans, analysts, and other talking head “experts”.

The Rats coaching staff should get credit for their patience.

Had he been a Steeler, I wouldn’t be going out on a limb to say that we here at SN would have called for his head, and that he would have met the same fate as Pickett…outa here in two years.

What do Yinz think?
Fields had only played 3 full seasons.
Use patience and continue to work with him?

My issue is I don’t want to wait as long as it took Lamar.
I’m too ******* old.
LOL! No.

If he was any good the Bears would have never let him go. Said the same thing about Trubisky.

I think they’re going to beat Buffalo and KC. Call me crazy.

The standard does not change, until the one who created the standard is no more

They're stacked and got the D straight in November. They have 2 WR, 2 TE, solid lines, all Pro Mike and free safety, decent pass rush, and freaking Jackson and Henry.

On the bright side, they have #21 playing corner and he gives it up every game. And Tucker may still be most accurate kicker in history but he's not automatic anymore.

How do you scheme to stop Jackson and Henry?

For those touting Lamars QB rating early in his career you have to look at the throws he was making and what they were asking him to do. His rating when forced to just play QB the first couple years was not stellar. He does what he needs to do from a passing standpoint and has improved making reads but he isn't and never will be a Manning or Brady type of QB where he could just sit and read a defense the way a pocket QB could. He has learned to read as needed within the confines of what they ask him to do. That is a credit to him but also his coaching staff to be creative and flexible enough to make it work for him.

I'd say he's the better than Brady or Manning today.

If he continues to win his first ring this year in the same fashion, he'll claim best QB season of all-time

C’mon people.
It feels like there’s some denial or maybe backpedaling going on around here.
It wasn’t just my imagination.
Many of us were convinced that Jackson wouldn’t amount to nothing but a running QB with happy feet.

A quick Google to jog your memories.

“While Lamar Jackson showed flashes of potential early in his career, it's generally accepted that he was not considered "good" in his early years, particularly at the NFL level, due to concerns about his passing accuracy, mechanics, and whether his unique running style would translate to sustained success in the professional league; many critics questioned if he could be a true starting quarterback.

Key points about Lamar Jackson's early years:

Inconsistency:
His passing accuracy and decision-making were inconsistent, leading to criticism about his ability to read defenses and make precise throws.
"Mobile QB" stigma:

Some doubted if a quarterback relying heavily on running could succeed at the NFL level.

College system concerns:

His college offense at Louisville was not considered "pro-style", raising questions about his ability to adapt to a more complex NFL scheme.
However, it's important to note that:
Development and improvement:

Lamar Jackson has worked significantly on his passing skills and mechanics since entering the league, leading to a significant improvement in his overall game. “

Some of that sounds similar to Fields

Did it really take a long time for Lamar to develop? His QB Rating was 113.3 his second year in the league. Ben never had a rating that high. Lamar's career rating is also higher than Ben's. Just because Steeler fans say Lamar sucks doesn't actually mean that Lamar sucks.

That's based on the regular season. He hasn't fared so well in the postseason, but he is lighting it up so far this year.

It wasn’t just Steeler fans, as I mentioned it was a lot of people.

Who are you quoting. AI?

Jackson was MVP in his first full season. They destroyed the league that year

Lamar has surprised me since I never thought he’d be as good as he’s turned out to be.
He had the fortune to be drafted by Baltimore where Harbaugh had the smarts to develop his offense around Lamar’s talents.
Justin whom I really like and admire. The young man did a good job for six games and when Tomlin sat him down, he never complained. He was the consummate professional and I love that about him.
He’s a super talented guy that needs a break with the right organization that will build around his strengths like Lamar but it’s not here. Tomlin is not capable of that and wouldn’t hire the right coaches to do it.
I think if you put him in the correct environment, solid coaching, good OL, quality skill players, yes I think he can be very, very good. Idk if as good as Lamar but he’s a talent that’s for sure. Just unfortunate to be drafted by Bears and picked up by Steelers who don’t have a clue in how to develop him.
YES!
You me and many others!

I feel bad for Fields. He needed to be put in an offense built around him and left alone for a few years. He has an absolute cannon for an arm and is a very good runner. His main weakness is reading the defense and moving him from different offense to different offense has really screwed him. Is he salvageable? Honestly probably not but if you could build an offense designed around quick and easy reads and running the football(both RB and QB)mixed with some fly routes he might be pretty good.

As a matter of fact it was. Looked at it again and noticed "AI Overview"
It was the first source that popped up.
I suppose it shouldn't be trusted?
