worlids rejects long term offer

^^
This I agree with. You don't cut your bargaining chip for no good reason. Yes, they were trying to be nice and let Woodley get another overpaid contract but for the Steelers they should have waited to lock up Worilds or until June 1st. They could have at least said unless you sign we will just keep Woodley also and you two have to fight for the starting job. Worilds would have to know that "if" Woodley stayed healthy he had a very good chance of winning the starting job and if he stayed healthy for the season yes you pay a guy 9.7 million to sit on the bench but he's not increasing his value there either. Would have helped keep some leverage in the Steelers back pocket.

But I still say I don't want Worilds to sign a long term deal with too much up front money. Dude is ALWAYS hurt so I almost prefer him starting this year and seeing what he can do and how many games he plays. If he does great, yes we have to franchise him next year. But if he ends up with 8 sacks in 16 games then you let his *** walk knowing you aren't stuck with an overpaid OLB which probably can be replaced with a draft pick or Arthur Moats next year for a lot less.

Agreed, in any case he has to play his guts out to earn his big contract here or anywhere else. The team will benefit of it

Woodley is only a bargaining chip if you intend to keep him, which the Steelers did not. Keeping both guys was not an option - it's Woodley's salary that helped pay for the rookies. You could ask him to take a pay cut but then you are over a barrell as now Woodley is dictating the terms. Worilds also said on more than one occasion that he would only want to stay if he was a starter - again, keeping Wood is a detriment to signing Worilds. He was more valuable off the team then on it, so off he went.

Based upon who he was, that he learned under Lebeau and what he has produced in the past, I don't think Woodley's contract is signficantly different.

Worilds doesn't seem itching to sign, now, and we are over a barrel. I'd rather not him not have us over a barrel. Would having Woodley still around make him LESS itchy to sign? The fact that Woodley got a huge contract and he was unable to play isn't exactly the way you should treat your employer either. It's not like he didn't cash those checks when hurt.

Do you honestly think that if JJ Watts got released 2 weeks before the season, he wouldn't get snapped up immediately and paid a ton of money? No, I'm not comparing Woodley to Watts, just pointing out that it matters who you are and what you have prodcued as it does when you are available.

I agree that JJ Watt could set his own price, but I also challenge that the Texans would never dare let him sit while they decide what to do with him. Maybe i'm wrong, was there a recent example of a high priced talented free agent that was cut this late?

As I said above, there is no situation in which Worilds would not have leverage. We need a guy on the left, and he had a good (half) season. Woodley wouldn't change this for the better and his presence would hurt more than help for the reasons I stated above. The Steelers are not without leverage in this situation though. If Worilds does not sign a long term deal, then performs poorly next season, he walks and we find someone else. If he performs well, his price is driven up sure, but any team in the league would gladly pay for a pro bowl caliber pass rusher.

******* bouchette, shoulda known better! Someone please run this guy on a rail outta town

Ummmmm, Foote plays ILB. Worlids play OLB? If we can't sign him long term we will prob draft someone.

This Foote guy is a freak and play inside or outside. Be a great signing for the right price

And he already knows the defense! what a deal! Go ahead Ed B. you can run a story about this while you troll the board looking for material to steal and then publish. Maybe we should now refer to him as Special ED

Just an update

With the ink still fresh on an extension that will keep tackle Marcus Gilbert in Pittsburgh through 2019, the Steelers reportedly haven't had the same success brokering a deal with Jason Worilds.

The 26-year-old, who has spent his entire four-year career with the Steelers, rejected a multi-year deal in June before the team used the $9.745-million franchise tag on the outside linebacker.

In 15 games last season, Worilds collected 63 tackles, eight sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.

Worilds is gone after this year. I just don't see us paying him the money he wants. And, if he has a 10+ sack season this year and plays great in the run game, we won't be able to afford him.

Nah, we'll just tag him again. If we can fit him under the cap in 2014 at ~$10 million, they we can pay a bit more in 2015 with the cap going up significantly.

And, if he has a 10+ sack season this year and plays great in the run game, we won't be able to afford him.

I sincerely hope not, as they cannot afford to lose another young defender they drafted and developed after losing Keenan Lewis last year.

If he breaks out with a big year, it would not be too difficult of pill to swallow to franchise him next winter, while attempting to work a contract out.

Maybe Vic So'oto will pull a James Harrison and dominate everyone's poop holes at age 29 as a first-time starter after being bounced around the league as a backup. He made those two plays in the preseason!

It'd be nice if we hadn't wasted a first on Jarvis. I kinda' feel that if we lose Worilds they'll be content with trotting ****/stopgaps out there across from their "star, first round pick" Jarvis Jones.

I hope the team learned from the Woodley mistake in you can't break the bank on one guy. I am 100% ok franchising him next year and either brokering a trade for a nice 1st and maybe a few late round picks or renting him for 2015 as well and letting him walk in 2016. No need to overspend on one guy.

This. PLUS - we have Howard Jones standing in the shadows...

Right now, Worilds is not worth half of what they are paying him this year. He's done nothing in his career. He needs to come out with 10 plus sacks just to earn what he is making this year. I still don't see us giving him any type of top 3 contract that he will probably want. And, I wouldn't tag him again. We can find something on the scrap heap to fill in.

He's getting $10 million to play in 2014, let's see how he does before declaring that's he's not worth it. I think he will get double digit sacks this year.
