Not too early: what to do at QB?

Fields has higher upside. But let’s be honest what other real choices are there right now that are better? The pickings are slim.

Agree, but the Steelers need to be keeping a big eye on the draft as well. If their guy is there, they need to draft him regardless of if Fields is here or not.

QB is such a crap-shoot, maybe in numbers comes strength. Hopefully they can hit ob something. Justin has a chance to make noise, so let it happen and open things up a bit.

We are losing games because we take ZERO risk (both sides of the ball), I’d think the reward out weights the risk and puts that $$$defense$$$ in a better chance to actually close out a game.

I don’t want Sanders. We won’t get Ward. Shough could be a good gamble in the mid rounds.

Sanders and the side show that comes with him will be big tv. Maybe not a lot of wins. Tomlin loves pedigree. Sanders will be there when he picks. Dion probably already talked to him.

Sanders won't be there when we pick unless he purposefully blows his pro day and interviews. If we do somehow end up Sanders it might be a good thing. Deion won't be afraid to call out Tomlin and could create the media fire we need to have real changes. I do think Sanders can be a decent QB, it is just the sideshow that comes with it.

If they sign either, we are in for another playoff, 1st round loss. More mindless, run, run, short pass (or incomplete) then punt.
Very possibly but Fields is the best available option. And, him signing for 6 to 8 million per as some blowhard pundit said he was worth is ridiculous. That value is for someone who is a backup as he was most of the year. If they sign him, he will be the starter and his price tag will be at least $15 million (he'd be crazy to take less unless he is going to be a backup). At that price, any QB1 is a huge bargain. He improved a good bit in his 6 games last year from his time in Chicago. He is still young. Hopefully, with a year in this system and coaching up by Wilson last year, he will continue to improve. He is the only QB available that still has upside left in him. Everyone else being talked about is on there way to retirement village. That's why you give Fields a true shot here in Pittsburgh. And, hopefully, Fields go a new coach/trainer for this offseason and is already working on improving.

Maybe the real open competition should be at O.C.! I don't feel like this offense could go backwards in creativity.

This is the best example of how wrong these people are with their "market value" crap. Zack Baun, LB for the eagles, had a "market value" of 3 years 36m. That's what was predicted he would get in FA. The Eagles, bidding against no one but themselves, signed him to a 3 year 51m deal with 34m guaranteed. Anyone that thinks Fields is going to sign for 6-8m is dreaming. 15m might even be on the low side by the end of this all. I'm expecting in the 20m range if it's a multiyear deal, which I would want if I'm Fields. I don't want the one year prove it deal and still not know where I'm going to be, ala Sam Darnold.

I am getting the sense if the Steelers don't get Fields or Russ locked in before next week they'll be going in a different direction.
Very well could be. The price tag might be too rich for their liking orrrr that open market can seem to be attractive to a player. Especially with those players whose agents might say there should be a market for their services….

Yea. He will fetch about 25M/. They will TRY to rig the contract for an easy out for the steelers if need be.

Just a little help for you there.

Fields has an agent and those agents aren’t dumb. Maybe the high guaranteed money will let the tail end of contract as an easy out.

Regardless I’d say between 17mil - 24mil / 4yr deal 55-70% guaranteed., escalators in the contract as well.

They are NOT going to sign him for “back-up” money.!

I think you're right. $20 million per for 2 or 3 seasons is what I have in my head they will pay him. They don't want him to get to free agency next week. If he does, they will need to put his negotiation on the back burner and immediately start looking elsewhere. They can't do anything with WR's, etc. until they have their QB in place.

What if we get the deal we are used to.. but we get the receiver in the same deal. AAron Rogers, and Davante Adams. ?
I know,, i know.

We need to sign a qb. Tomlin loves rogers. We need a receiver. Aaron loves Davante.
Im not a hard core proponent of this. But the more i think about it,, its possible.

Raiders just traded for Geno Smith. I wonder if Seattle is going to try to trade Minn for JJ McCarthy. Seattle HC Mike Macdonald probably remembers him from when he was DC at Michigan and cheating.

Aaron Rodgers - wouldn't want him for league minimum. You bring him in and you have to run his offense. You have to live with his antics. There's zero chance he'd click with Pickens.

Sam Darnold - he's OK but will come at a huge cost for limited upside.

Justin Fields - by far the biggest talent available and still young. He's better than any QB in this draft. He's a team player and coachable. He has shown improvement. The problem is the Bears completely watsed his first few seasons with changing schemes, no OL and no weapons. He's finally in a spot where he can be in a stable offense for multiple seasons in a row.

Sign Fields. That's it. He may never develop into a top performer, but he's worth the risk. At a bare minimum, he can give you a Kordell level performance and win you a bunch of games, just maybe not a Super Bowl. The upside is huge. If he does develop, you're looking at a Mahomes or Allen level gamebreaker.

Fields is worth the risk. The only way he should not be a steeler is if he is offered an insane contract elsewhere.

Anything other than Fields is treading water until the 26 draft.

If they go with Rodgers, I will be more than pissed. That move would set the team back for 5 to 10 years. And, Darnold probably won't do much better but he is younger. I just hope they don't throw 40 to 50 million per at either of these guys. Fields just wants to know he will be the starter this year. How hard is that? Give him that assurance and if they draft a QB early, that QB should sit for at least a year.

I’d offer Justin a 3/54m contract and see if he bites. If he wants more, up it to 60m. There are no better options out there and he is still young. Anything north of 20m a year though and I’m not so sure. Maybe then we just tank this year completely and have a top 3 pick next year to try and get our QB. Doesn’t really matter anyways as long as Tomlin is here.

Steelers should also sign Daniel Jones. He's just like Ryan Tannehill who had great seasons in Smith's offense. Jones is a very good athlete, has a good arm and accuracy. His problem has been decision making which is partly due to him running for his life behind the non-existant Giants OL and having no weapons. Jones is similar to Fields. Player with upside who has been in a bad situation.

Look at Darnold with the Vikes. That shows you the importance of scheme fit. Daniel Jones is a great fit in Arthur Smith's scheme. You can probably get him cheap.

If they miss on fields, Daniel Jones should be plan B. Sign Jones then draft a QB to compete.

I don't see any reason to sign Wilson. No upside and doesn't fit with Arthur Smith. If you do keep him, then sign some deep threat outside WRs and just throw moon balls.

I think the Dolphins should sign Russ.

So looks like our options are thinning quickly.

Russell Wilson
A-A-Ron Rodgers
Mac Jones
Kyle Trask
Zach Wilson
Daniel Jones
Trey Lance

Who you signing?

That dried up quickly. Here we are holding our dick in our hands again.
