Not too early: what to do at QB?

He was never used correctly and would look good in B&G

The hands are the only factor, they are disproportionately out of whack, maybe to much whacking stunted their growth ????

They need to stop all this nonsense with 37 year old Stafford and 42 year old Rodgers and 36 year old Cousins. We don’t need any of them and they should consider retiring.
Trevor Lawrence is way overpaid and over hyped and he’s not coming to Pittsburgh nor should they want him to come.
Just sign Justin before FA starts and build around him. The OL should be better, add two new quality WRs, real WRs this time not the frauds they have been bringing in here. Draft and FA should fix that. Draft a solid RB to pair with Warren who they should re-sign.
Year two in Arthur’s offense should benefit Justin and if he flops, then we draft our QB in 26.
This is nonsense wanting to bring in one of these old veteran QBs. If they’re thinking that QB brings them to a SB they are more delusional than I thought.

All great points and thanks for your great post(s) along the way.

ONLY one flaw in this line of thinking…… They only need 8 wins and 1 tie, nothing near a SB win.

They brought in a guy an OC that molded LJ. I think he has done special things with him.

I think that's why Smith likes Fields over Wilson. Fits his system better, and I think Smith could very be the right guy to build an offense around Fields. Whether or not it's successful remains to be seen.

I wouldn't waste draft capital or large $$ on a QB until we have a better foundation around him. Bringing in an expensive vet without a competent line and WRs is just a waste of $$ and/or draft picks. I would be fine rolling with Fields or even Wilson for cheap and focus on the trenches.

We shouldn't spend a dime on a QB - money or draft capital as long as Tomlin is here. He is now on record showing Rooney and Steeler Nation that he is the one holding the team back on both sides of the ball. No throwing over the middle and no audibling. This is truly disturbing coming from a head coach. He doesn't play to win, period. He plays not to lose. That is not how successful teams do things and is the reason we are stuck right around 500 with blowout losses if we do sneak into the playoffs.

The more I hear actual insiders talk, the more convinced I am they are gonna bring a pricey Russell Wilson back...

I'm not sold on Lawrence at all, but would like to see what he could do in a different situation, though being coached by Tomlin probably isn't what he needs.

It hasn't been all bad, as he was actually one of the best QBs in the league during the second half of the 2022 season, looking like he turned the corner, but hasn't been the same since.

He's had some injuries and the Jaguars have become one of the symbols of dysfunction in the league along with the Browns and Jets.

A change of scenery could do him some good, but he's going to have to be willing to take less money to get an opportunity somewhere else.
I'm with you on giving him another chance but at what cost, and surely not with Mediocre Mike coaching him. What total FAILs.

The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards offering Fields a 4 year B/U contract with incentives. If he does well he gets paid well, if not then he becomes the B/U. I would also offer Allen the same contract and see if either takes the starting job. I would also bring in at least 2 UDFA QB's to fight for the B/U and #3 position.

There really isn't anyone out there this year that looks like a surefire starter in the Draft or FA. Fields has as much potential as anyone, and he has been in the system for a year, Allen too.
Fields has been in what 5 years? That's by far long enough, he should have shown more by now if he was going to.

As each day passes, more people are talking about Rodgers going to the Steelers. Seriously?!?! I hope Rooney and Tomlin aren't that stupid. DO NOT even consider Rodgers.
That would just be an admittance to just giving up. But, why not? They do it all over this team now, it's the Fraudlin way.

So much for that illegitimate option (Was he really ever a real consideration? Only if he would come in for super cheap).

Art II was quoted as saying the "Steelers were a real disappointment" last year and that there "will be no major changes" this season. So, being that you admit they were a real disappointment last year and that there will not be any major changes (not in HC, OC or DC or OL) just what is there to give us ANY hope in things improving? Shades is suddenly going to get wise? Get more disciplined? Stop being so afraid of turnovers? Not gonna happen.

After 5 years, they are still gonna count of Fields "developing." Good luck with that. 9-8 here we come.

This is still considered new news?

No he was never considered a real option as he was under contract.

Hopefully your next created thread will be something new.

Doubtful but I am still holding out hope.

(Kidding I have no hope not even a little bit)

I cannot imagine a scenario where they do not make a move at QB on March 12. We will know the Steelers starting Q by the end of that day. One thing about NFL teams. You have to sell hope. And if you have to sell Daniel Jones you are hopeless. I'm gonna say Fields. I hope it has good escape clauses and it wouldn't surprise me if it's Russ. Bottom line you cannot draft at 21 or whatever they are and hope for a day one starter. They are going to have to be ultra aggressive or the music will stop real quick with no chair to sit on.

If it is fields or russ, they can do it any day now. Anyone else they have to wait

Maybe they are waiting to see if an unavailable becomes available. Or will look closer at Darnold.

Or don’t want to overpay for Russ or Fields.

Their option to not overpay for Fields or Russ goes out the window as soon as other teams can talk to them. Right now, they aren't bidding against anyone, that changes next week. If they sign Darnold, it changes my draft a lot. Because if he doesn't have the skill players around him, he'll look like the Jets Darnold and not the Vikings Darnold. But I'd really hate to miss out on Grant because they signed Darnold...

I have faith they could draft a capable WR in 2 and bring in a decent WR in free agency. Do that and add it to GP and Austin it could give Darnold plenty of options.

I am thinking like:

Grant
WR
CB or RB
RB or CB
T

In 7 you could draft a backup QB

You also have to look at what made Darnold look good last year in Minnesota. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ Hockenson. As much as I like certain WR in the second round, I feel like you'd have to look at Egbuka or Golden, because the FA WR market isn't great, and trades you're looking at second tier guys that would be fringe WR2/WR3 guys. I just really don't think Darnold is the answer, and I'm hoping they don't throw a ton of money at him.

Can only sign Fields or Russ before free agency if they agree to what is offered by the Steelers. Right now they are bidding against Fields' and Russ' own expectations of what they might get in free agency.

I guess part of it is what you think GPs growth potential is. I think with Darnold the potential is there to grow considerably not that I want them to overpay for him either.

The free agent market will probably get a boost with some players that should become available due to age contract, salary cap concerns.

Also some attractive options are coming off injury. Sure injuries come with questions but bargains can be found.

Also every year players slide. GP slid not unreasonable to think a higher value WR is sitting there in 2.

Remember the year Steelers force fed Troy Edwards?

I guess I am just not locked into having to pick a WR although I again do love me some Golden.

If you say bring back Fields that air attack might not be as big as a priority with his pass and run skillset.

Something to keep an eye on as well.

I think GP CAN be a Jefferson type, but he's not there yet. And we also don't use him that way either, and we can't without a viable threat on the opposite side. And I think the bargain bin players we've grabbed recently should keep us from going that route again. We have a tendency to go too deep in the bin, and miss out on the real bargains.

And I think a player like Godwin isn't going to even hit FA. I bet they lock him up soon actually. They did a very good job of keeping their own last offseason, I don't see that trend changing anytime soon.

I think if we stick with Fields, with his legs being another weapon to account for, we can use that second round a guy like Savion Williams, Jaylen Royals, Elic Ayomanor, guys like that. But if it's Darnold, you better be able to have enough instant weapons that teams can't just load up and blitz because he will fold like a lawn chair. I'm definitely not saying that I want to draft a WR in the first, I want Grant big time. I just don't know if grabbing Darnold allows you that luxury to wait until the second round for a WR in THIS draft.

Golden would be the WR I would choose as well btw

I couldn't have said it better. Fraudlin = waste $ and drafts all for nothing. How much more clear does it have to be?

Russ + Fraudlin = 5 straight losses to end the year, including the playoffs by a landslide again. Not even a game.

are there any worth FA WRs ? Higgins, Godwin won't be FAs, who's left?
